Kasparov moved away from the rest of the field to take very clear first in Wijk aan Zee. The top four players were all undefeated and all go on to Linares at the end of February, it should be a fantastic tournament. Elsewhere there is a nice mix of chess including the Keres Memorial rapidplay in Tallinn which saw Ivanchuk and Shirov play.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The first major tournament of 2000 was won comfortably by Garry Kasparov. The Corus Chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee ran 14th-30th January 2000 in the De Moriaan Community Centre and was just shy of Category 19. Kasparov's play was just a little short of his best, but all his games were of interest and he was ruthlessly efficient when chances were presented to him (perhaps only Anand was allowed to escape). Kasparov won the most games (6) and finished undefeated. In joint second place were Anand, Kramnik and Leko, again all were undefeated scoring +3 =10. They all struggled to get going with at least one (Anand) suffering from flu like symptoms. These four players will be joined by Khalifman and Shirov in Linares February 28th - March 10th 2000. In 5th place was the crowd's favourite Alexander Morozevich. I watched Morozevich destroy the last Lloyds Bank tournament with 10/11 and his progress to the top ten isn't that bigger surprise. However he is the loostist player at the top level in a very, very long time. He likes to complicate and frequently comes close to losing. Its entertaining chess but often unsound, Kasparov was annoyed he didn't get more spectator prizes but people like to see players get away with enterprising (perhaps even over-enterprising) chess. Its a lot of years since Kasparov had the reputation of being exciting but slightly unsound but it was one of the reasons people liked his early play. However Morozevich's style does not look suited to a Linares style tournament.
The Dutch (and Corus in particular) are to be congratulated in putting together an excellent event and its to be hoped that a few more top events can be organised this year. There are certainly plenty of gaps in the calendar and a number of excellent GMs about (I asked Peter Svidler what his plans for this year were and he answered do you have any suggestions? He is not alone in this problem.).
Below is a small summary round by round. The TWIC website has excellent pictures and reports direct from the venue by John Henderson and also TWIC TV which was from Wijk aan Zee.
Round 9. There were just two decisive results in round 9 and all the games were finshed around the first time control. First to finish was the game Korchnoi-Nikolic which ended suddenly when Korchnoi blundered on move 18. Kasparov and Timman had a theoretical discussion of the Scotch, one which they've had a number of times before. They entered an endgame on move 20 and Timman didn't find a way of defending his inferior position. Polgar-Leko was a complex Sicilian Defence ending in a draw in 34 moves. Kramnik-Piket was a Kings Indian where Kramnik seemed to overpress slightly, he had to defend a little but the game ended in a draw on move 39. Van Wely-Lputian was a Bf4 Queens Gambit Declined, on move 21 Van Wely won Queen for Rook and Knight but play seemed balanced after that and he took a draw straight after first time control. Adams-Anand was started 1. e4 e5 2. Bc4. Adams won a pawn but agreed to a draw on move 34, as it wasn't that easy to use. Morozevich-Short was a Scotch where Short seemed to be close to winning, Morozevich found a fine idea to earn a draw by perpetual check in 34 moves.
Round 10. Garry Kasparov extended his lead to a full point after converting an extra pawn in an ending against Predrag Nikolic. Jeroen Piket won a pawn against Nigel Short in an unusual d-pawn opening. Piket then won a piece by exploiting Short's bad King position. Anand-Morozevich was a fascinating draw in the Slav Defence. Lputian-Adams was an a3 Queens Indian drawn in 29 moves. Timman-Van Wely was an exciting Scheveningen Sicilian won by Timman in 37 moves. Leko-Korchnoi was a Classical French where Leko won a pawn and converted a complex ending. Kramnik-Polgar was drawn in 31 moves of a Queens Indian.
Round 11. Garry Kasparov drew against Peter Leko in A Sicilian Defence lasting 34 moves. Leko had to play carefully to achieve the draw but never seemed in any danger. Joint with Leko in second place was Vladimir Kramnik , he drew against Victor Korchnoi with black in 43 moves. Alexander Morozevich produced another wonderful mess, this time on the white side of a French starting 1. e4 e6 2. d3 d5 3. Qe2 against Smbat Lputian. Lputian was winning for several moves as Morozevich missed something and came close to just resigning. Lputian's 28. ...gxh2 was the start of some real mistakes and gradually Morozevich opened up on Lputian's King and won on move 37. Michael Adams beat Jan Timman on the white side of the Petroff's Defence. Adams gradually out-manoeuvered Timman eventually netting a pawn and with another about to fall Timman resigned on move 41. Nigel Short drew against Viswanathan Anand in a very dull Petroff's Defence. Judit Polgar won her first game of the event by beating Jeroen Piket in 45 moves of a Ruy Lopez. Van Wely failed to convert a winning position againstPredrag Nikolic.
Round 12. Garry Kasparov held Vladimir Kramnik on the black side of a Gruenfeld Defence Exchnage Variation assuring himself at least a tie for first place. Kasparov was faced with a move that has not been seen with success since the 50's. 8.h3 is a rarity and was generally thought to be a waste of a tempo compared with the trendy 8.Rb1 that is Kramnik's speciality. Kasparov came up with a novelty, 9. ...b5 that had advantages and disadvantages over 9 b6. He decided not to test the critical line with 9 Nc6 where White often sacrifices the exchange with d5, doubtless Kramnik was ready for that. Kramnik found a way to exploit Kasparov with the clever 14.Qb1 but although he won a pawn the game reached an endgame with just kingside pawns. Kramnik was in already time trouble and could not find a way to play for a win and just before first time control Kasparov achieved a dead drawn position. Peter Leko had the opportunity to move half a point closer to Kasparov but he drew against Van Wely in only 28 moves of a Sicilian as once again the back marker defended against the English Attack in the Najdorf with the thematic idea of g5 grabbing the black squares. Unlike Jan Timman and Alexander Morozevich in earlier rounds, Leko could not find a sacrificial continuation and was probably pleased with the repetition of moves as his kingside was taken over. Jeroen Piket and Viswanathan Anand disputed a line of the Slav where black gives up a piece. They agreed it drawn after 17 moves without having left the book (it followed Cramling-Hector Malmo 1998 and a few others). Judit Polgar had white against Viktor Korchnoi who played the MacCutcheon Variation. Korchnoi diverged first from a couple of his games from the 50s where he played 8...g6 - 8...Kf8is thought superior nowadays and then diverged from the game Polgar v Lautier Madrid 1993 with 14 Bd7. The game ended in a draw in 48 moves with Black always looking fine. Jan Timman played a variation of the Tarrasch French where he wins the exchange on move 13 against Alexander Morozevich. The line is generally held to be great for black. 21. Rad1 seemed to be a new move and despite Morozevich's attempts to complicate Timman converted the won position he had achieved at the first time control. Predrag Nikolic beat Michael Adams on the white side of a Queens Indian. Adams sought activity but at the cost of a weak pawn on c5 that was expertly surrounded (31.Nf1! and 32.Nd2 unmasking the Bf2). Adams lost the pawn just before first time control and faced with an outside passed pawn he resigned. Smbat Lputian was again very unlucky not to win and was unable to finish off Nigel Short after winning a pawn just out of the opening in a Queens Indian. Short's early queen sortie was simply refuted ( 14.Nf3! when both captures on f2 lose material) and Lputian was just a passed queenside pawn up for nothing before blundering it back. He might have missed that 31.f3 does not win a piece after 31 Qd4+ 32.Bf2 Qa1+. White was still better but elected to swop queens into a king and pawn endgame that turned out to be drawn when the queen and pawn endgame still gave him chances.
Round 13. Garry Kasparov beat Judit Polgar in a thrilling game where he took huge risks to maintain his 100% record against her. Polgar came up with a novelty 10. ...Nf6 in a variation of the Sicilian she has used before (although Kasparov may have been ready for it as it was his 10. h3 was a surprise. Kasparov found an exchange sacrifice that first of all secured equality and then in mutual time trouble a winning position. Michael Adams drew with Peter Leko in only 15 moves of a Bb5 Sicilian. Kramnik and Van Wely also drew, in 22 moves of a Queens indian. Nigel Short won a pawn against Jan Timman in an Open Ruy Lopez but couldn't convert it in a Queen and Pawn ending. Alexander Morozevich completed an exciting tournament for him by beating Predrag Nikolic in a 1. e4 e6 2. d3 d5 3. Qe2 French. Viktor Korchnoi beat Jeroen Piket in a Queens Indian Classical Variation. Piket got himself into terrible time pressure leaving himself only 11 minutes after move 17 and only a minute for the last ten moves. Korchnoi won the resulting bishops of opposite colour ending. Viswanathan Anand beat Smbat Lputian in 61 moves of a Winawer French Defence with 5. ...Ba5. Anand made slow progress in an ending where black had a dreadful light squared bishop but Lputian had seen enough after the second time control
