My thanks to Anton Gubanov, Club Kasparov and RusChess, Leontxo García, Jesús Mena Sarasola, Carlo Mazzoni, Pam Thomas, Herman van Riemsdijk, Luis Bernardo Hoyos-Millan, Harald Grafenhofer, Michael Atkins, Ryan Hadley, all those who took part in the Millennium poll and all those who helped with this issue.
My thanks to everyone who took part in my Millennium Poll where Bobby Fischer just edged out Garry Kasparov as your favourite player. The year has started with some good chess (from Reggio and Pamplona), good news for FIDE (Leontxo García reports that FIDE have paid the players just in time for the new year) and good news for Khalifman in particular (who apart from the FIDE payments is now invited to Linares in place of Morozevich). Lets hope the year is one of good news.
Hope you enjoy this issue

Who are your favourite chess players of the millennium? I asked you to nominate your top five players. A difficult task to be sure (many of you would have preferred a lot more nominations). My thanks to everyone who took part and for your thoughtful contributions. 502 people took part in the poll and there were 116 players nominated.
Comments on the top 18
People had very strong opinions, some put players in ranking order and for their number one choice said either "of course" or "who else" players who fell into this category included Capablanca, Fischer, Kasparov and Tal. In the end the battle for the number one spot was between Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov. Someone suggested that I should also have had a least favourite player poll too, and in the tradition of the music polls, its possible Fischer would have topped both.
In the end Bobby Fischer topped the poll.
There is no doubt
however that Bobby Fischer's push for the World Championships and its attendant
publicity was the greatest exposure the game has ever received. Many players
started to play the game on the back of this publicity, including myself.
In second place was Garry Kasparov finishing just 17 votes short of Fischer's total. Its always hard to judge someone's career whilst it is still in progress, perhaps when its finished people will appreciate him more than now or perhaps less. Kasparov's domination of the latter part of the 1980s and the whole of the 1990's along with his exciting play will surely secure him a high place in any future poll. However one can't take such things for granted. If such a poll had been held in 1971 then I'm certain Boris Spassky would have been near the top. Years of decline that followed his loss of the title in 1972 and the fact that a great book on his career has yet to be written all conspired against him. He got many of the votes he did get for being one of the sport's great gentlemen, not for his great play, which seems now largely forgotten.
Alexander Alekhine finished a clear third, his explosive play and the ease with which you can follow his play with explanations in his own words lifted him above his great rivals Capablanca and Lasker.
At one stage I thought Mikhail Tal might be in the shake up for the top places. In the end he finished in 4th. His explosive play on the way to winning the title inspired a generation. Tal suffered illness throughout his subsequent career but even as late as 1979 it looked as if he might regain the number one spot in the World. Tal also has been described as a great gentleman (although perhaps those who played him around the time he won the title might disagree, then he had the reputation of staring at his opponent) probably because he seemed the most approachable of the champions. One voter called him the chessplayer's chessplayer and that seems to sum up his appeal.
Lasker came in 4th and 5th respectively. These two prewar titans appeal on completely different levels. Capablanca was one of the greatest natural talents the game has ever seen, the chess machine, undefeated in many years and after losing the title had a late flourish in 1936 winning the two major events of the year. His wonderfully clear style has won him many advocates over the years. Lasker was his great battling rival and he came in 6th place, 27 years as World Champion and his longevity were some of the key reasons for voting for him.
Anatoly Karpov is one of the most controversial players in history, he won the title by default in 1975 and had controversial matches against Korchnoi and Kasparov. Nevertheless he also had a very clear style which is attractive to chess fans and has won more tournaments than anyone else.
Paul Morphy's reputation relies almost entirely on an explosive appearance in Europe in 1858. His very clear and direct style which was very much ahead of its time still mark him out nearly 150 years later as one of the great chessplayers.
Mikhail Botvinnik came next. People appreciated his iron logic and fighting qualities and recognised his contribution to Soviet chess, including some part the training of a number of the great players who followed him.
Viktor Korchnoi 10th place again shows that people vote for longevity at the highest level. Korchnoi was a great player in the 1950s and 60s but came into his own in the 1970s to become Karpov's close rival. Korchnoi still plays to an extremely high level now.
If you want to be appreciated as a player (modern stars please note!) then writing about it is a good way to do it. Aaron Nimzowitch came in 11th place, his writings and theories rather than his results seem to have secured him this high placing. Almost every player at some time has played through some of his games and discovered something they didn't know about the game.
It seems a nice irony that two of the strongest players never to win the title were tied together on 45 votes, David Bronstein tied a World Championship match with Botvinnik in 1951 and was one of the most creative players in the World at his best, Paul Keres first came to prominence in the late 1930s and after the war when his country of Estonia was subsumed into the Soviet Union came second in a number of the Candidates events for the World Championships. Whether he was denied the chance behind the scenes to fight for the title itself is still a matter of great controversy (as indeed are some of the moments in Bronstein's 1951 match).
Viswanathan Anand was the first of the post-Kasparov generation to make the list. He was followed by Tigran Petrosian who had the reputation of being a boring player but his games are still amongst the most instructional. Alexei Shirov was tied level with Petrosian, his explosive games were widely appreciated. Judit Polgar was one of only three women players nominated. Her superiority over all other women's players in history and her thrilling style got her votes. Akiba Rubinstein's very clear games seemed the key to his support and that he possibly was the best player in the World at the end of the first decade of the 20th Century.
Poll results in full 1. Bobby Fischer 362 votes 2. Garry Kasparov 345 votes 3. Alexander Alekhine 230 votes 4. Mikhail Tal 218 votes 5. Jose Capablanca 196 votes 6. Emanuel Lasker 140 votes 7. Anatoly Karpov 114 votes 8. Paul Morphy 91 votes 9. Mikhail Botvinnik 73 votes 10. Viktor Korchnoi 66 votes 11. Aaron Nimzowitch 51 votes 12. David Bronstein 45 votes Paul Keres 45 votes 14. The 26th Annual Eastern Open took place in Washington DC December 26th-29th 1999. Michael Atkins reports: GM Alexander Ivanov won his second Eastern Open in a row with a score of 6.5/8. Ivanov has a history of winning Eastern Opens, several years ago knocking off 4 GMs in a row to finish in clear first. Finishing a half point back were IM Edward Formanek and Yegeniy Gershov. The U.S. record holder for being the youngest master ever - Hikaru Nakamura, finished with 5.5 and had several really interesting games including a devastating attack against Nigerian IM Oladapo Adu and a cute finish against IM Larry Kaufman. With double rooks on the board and Nakamura down a pawn, RP vs R+N P, he sacrificed both rooks to create stalemate. The tournament website with games, results, standings and photos is http://www.chessctr.org/eastern.htm
The tournament was held again in the luxurious Wyndham in Washington DC. Thoughts of pending Y2K disasters might have kept a few players away, but those who came enjoyed a nice tournament with very few disputes. The most interesting one that comes to mind was a player about to lose when his opponent advanced a pawn to the 8th and replaced it with a Queen, came running out to claim that his opponent hadn't announced what piece it was. Well, make it the silliest claim :) Next year's tournament, to be held several days before the real new millenium, will be bigger and better than ever. Ryan Hadley reports: The Pan-American Intercollegiate Chess Championship ran from December 26th to 29th in Toronto, Canada. I played on the University of Waterloo team. The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) won for the third time in four years with a score of 5-0-1 (with FM Felecan as their board 1). The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) came in second (with GM Yuri Shulman as their board 1). Thirty-one teams participated from Canada, the US, and Peru. The Open section ended with 5 way tie for first between IM Nickoloff, IM Schleifer, IM Livshits, Milicevic, and Djerkovic. The blitz tournament was won by the new IM Zugic (that was the only event he played in). The Scholastic section was won by Stephen Glinert and if I understand correctly, first place also comes with a full scholarship to the University of Texas at Dallas. The website for the Pan-Am Intercollegiate is http://chess.sa.utoronto.ca/. They have more details and possibly games in the near future.
