4) Salona 99

The 7th international Solana Tournament takes place in Solin (CRO) 10th-18th December 1999. A Category 13 event. The event started again because of three days national mourning for the Croatian National President. This second event was won by home GM Zdenko Kozul half a point clear of Vladislav Tkachiev.

5) Russian Chess Championships

The 52nd Russian Chess Championships are taking place in Moscow, Russia December 15th-26th 1999. The event is a knockout and after three rounds Sakaev, Grischuk, Sveshnikov (who seems to have managed to keep most of his games out of the bulletin), Dvoirys, Bezgodov, Kobalija, Ibragimov and Lastin. Each round so far has consisted of two games at normal time-rates followed by rapidplay games.

6) European Team Championships

I represent the games from the European Team Championships. There were many, many errors and games missing from the file. Luc Winants however has a far more accurate file of games (having typed the missing ones in from the bulletin) than any before so it seems worth posting the games again. In addition Felix Izeta sent corrected scores to three of his games from the European Teams. You should delete all other versions of these games.

13) First Saturday December

Laszlo Nagy reports: there was one GM and two IM events as part of the First Saturday December tournaments in Budapest. In the GM event Peter Lukacs and Hoang Thanh Trang on 7/9. Hoang of Vietnam (19 years old) scored her first men's GM norm. Adam Szeberenyi (16), Ante Jurkovic of Croatia and Ni Hua of China all scored IM-norms. Worth noting is 12 year old Csaba Balogh who scored 6.5 points in the IM B event.

The 13th Ciudad de León Tournament will again use the "advanced chess" format (players will be allowed to use a computer for databases and a playing program). The competitors will be Anand, Shirov, Judith Polgar and Illescas. The event will run June 1st-5th 2000 (playing days: June 2nd Shirov-Illescas 2 game match, June 3rd Anand-Polgar 2 game match, June 3rd, final. The venue is the Junta de León” building, with the opening ceremony in the Conde Luna Hotel and the closing ceremony and Judit Polgar simul at the University.

42nd Reggio Emilia Tournament

The 42nd Reggio Emilia Tournament will run December, 27th 1999-January 5th 2000 in the Grand Hotel Astoria. Leko Khalifman match

FIDE World Champion Alexander Khalifman has agreed to play Hungarian Peter Leko in a six game match in Budapest. This is Khalifman's first committment agreed to after he became World Champion. The match will run 3rd-9th Jan 2000 (restday 6th) in Budapest . Time control will be 40moves in 2 hours then 20 in 1 and the rest 30 minutes. The match will be held in the Ballsaal of Hotel Kempinski in Budapest. The main sponsor of the event is the company Westfälische Ferngas AG (Dortmund, Germany), who also sponsor Peter Leko. Swiss Chess Tour 1999 and 2000

The "Swiss Chess Tour 99" will finish with the "Ambassador Open" in Bern, December 26.-30. 1999 and the new "Swiss Chess Tour 2000" will start two days later with the "Hilton Open" in Basel, January 1.-5. 2000. The "Ambassador open" is 6 years old, and is held in the Hotel Ambassador. The "Hilton Open" is the second such event in this venue, the first was last January, this new events shows that chess is very popular in Basel.

The both tournament are 7 rounds, Swiss system. The games will last a maximum of 5 hours (40 moves for 2 hours and 30 minutes till the end).

Prize are the same in Bern and Basel: 2.000 SF, 1.500, 1.000, 800, 600, 500, 400, 300, 250 and 200 SF. From 11.- 20. places natural prizes. The special prizes for best Lady, senior, junior, schoolboy and best local player.

Enter fee 130 SF, juniors 60 SF, at the door 10 SF more, GM and IM free.
