2) Monarch Assurance Open

The Monarch Assurance Open, Isle of Man, took place November 6th-14th November 1999 in the Cherry Orchard Hotel, Port Erin, Isle of Man. A little bit of history was created at the Monarch Assurance Open when the defending champion, Emil Sutovsky from Israel, retained his title. Sharing first equal with Russia's Sergey Shipov on 6.5/9, Sutovsky took the title on tiebreak to become the first winner to successfully defend the title. Nigel Short looked on target for a big score in the event until losing two consecutive games to Mark Hebden (where he claims he missed a win) and against Sergey Shipov where he again blundered.

My thanks to John Henderson in the Isle of Man for the coverage. See TWIC's pages for pictures and more from the event.

8) Spanish Team Championships

The Spanish Team Championships are taking place in the Hotel Villas D’Aljandar in Cala Galdana (Menorca) and run 8th-17th November 1999. There are three divisions of matches. In the First (Primera) Division the battle is between CA Marcote (Giorgadze, Vallejo Pons, Franco Ocampo) and Unio Gracienca D'Escacs (UCE with Illescas, Magem, Oms, Vehi) who have 20.5 points after seven rounds, this was after Marcote beat UCE in the seventh round. Players such as Lautier, Topalov (who is having a good event), Illescas, Giorgadze and Korneev are playing in this division. The games section has games only from this first division. I'll round up the best games from the second division at the end of the week. This section includes players such as Ian Roger, Mihai Suba, Pia Cramling (who had to go to hospital at the end of her round 3 game but rejoined the event later), Pablo Riccardi etc.

9) Italian Championships

Lanfranco Bombelli reports: The 59th Italian Championships are taking place in Saint-Vincent, Aosta Valley November 13th-21st. Igor Efimov is the top seed. Igor Efimov plays but he cannot win the title, his results are valid only for standing and prizes. A recent disposition of the Italian Olympic Committee allows no longer a foreign citizen to become Italian champion. Efimov is officially resident at Montecatini Terme with his family and FIDE recognized him as an Italian players four years ago. However he is still a Georgian citizen. One Italian player cannot play as he failed a drug test at the open in Porto San Giorgio. [I'm not aware of what drugs are banned for chess.]
