More European Club Cup qualifiers headline again this week along with a nice mix of GM, IM and junior events. News from Spain suggests the Linares 2000 tournament is struggling to find a sponsor and may well not take place. This with the loss of this year's Tilburg has significantly dented the amount of SuperGM events recently.
Hope you enjoy this issue

Stefan Muellenbruck reports: A Category 5 event was organised by Luxembourg's leading chess club Gambit Bonnevoie in memory of their late president, Donne Haas. This 10 player all-play-all took place September 18th-26th 1999. The players included 1 GM and 4 IMs, with an average rating of 2358. The event produced some interesting chess and was won by Ludger Koerholz (GER) ahead of GM Vlastimil Jansa (CZE) and IM Michael Wiedenkeller (SWE). Koerholz showed great fighting spirit (7 wins, 2 losses, no draws!) and scored his second fm norm.

The World Junior Championships took place in Yerevan, Armenia, September 18th-30th 1999. As reported last week in detail. Round 12 games are now available. Round 13 games seems unlikely to be made available on the official site, does anyone have them?
Alexander Galkin won the event with 10.5/13 half a point clear of Rustem Kasimdzhanov who took silver and Karen Asrian took Bronze on tie-break from Lev Aronian (who scored a GM nor after 10 rounds), both of whom were on 9.5. Maria Kouvatsou of Greece took Gold in the women's event ahead of Jana Jackova (CZE) who took silver and Szidonia Vajda who took Bronze. These three and the unlucky Irina Krush (who was the only one of the four not to get a medal) all scored 8.5/13 and medals were distributed according to some tie-breaking system applied to their results.
My thanks to Anton Gubanov, Webmaster for the "Russian Chess", for clarification of the names and to Osvaldo Orozco Mendez Barranquilla, for the PGN for converted rounds 7, 10 and 12 and Byes in all rounds. Games from rounds 1-12 are now available.

Sinisa Joksic reports: The Yugoslav team championships took place in Vrnjacka Banja August 17th- 28th 1999 with additional play-offs taking place August 29th-September 1st 1999. Under the new rules of the championships, the first four teams qualified for the "play-offs". It was a ridiculous condition to force the players, after 11 hard rounds, to play another 4. Two hard tournaments, one after another. It is clear that this type of competition wan't created for chessplayers. It was enormously hard, inhumane, and condusive to bad chess. This was the reason why the results and quality of the games was as a whole below the usual levels. "Play-offs" in sport have always been a way of generating extra money in popular sport, such as baseball, basketball, ice hockey or American football. Sports that bring crowds to stadiums, and who pay for high prced tickets to watch them etc. It didn't make any sense here.

The Organisation wasn't bad but Hotels charge very high rates and this was very expensive for less well off clubs.

Vrnjacka Banja, August 17.- 26. 1999. The women's championship were a race between "AGROUNIVERZAL" and "BAS". "AGROUNIVERZAL" took a two point advantage following the second round. "BAS" fought very well and gradually reduced the difference. In the final round they both had the same number of points, 21.5, then "AGROUNIVERZAL" scored 4:0 and won the title. The last two teams, "POZAREVACKI SAH KLUB" and "GOSA" from Smederevska Palanka dropped into the second division. ("GOSA" were the European Champion once!) The first seven teams were from Beograd! Women Grandmasters, Svetlana Prudnikova, Irina Chelushkina and Marija Manakova, who have lived for more than 10 years in Yugoslavia have married Yugoslavs, and had their own family and children who can play for the Yugoslav national team in the future. (Unbelievably, some officials from the Yugoslav Chess Federation were against it, for many years!) The separation of men and women in team competition, was once more demonstrated as a big mistake. In the golden years of Yugoslav Chess, the team championships was over 10 boards, 6 men, 2 women and 2 juniors.
