At last after nine days of exhausting chess (that's just for this journalist!) the FIDE Championships have reached the quarter finals, a time where we can absorb the chess. The pairings are intriguing. Kramnik, Gelfand and Shirov are the top seeds in their quarters favourites (by no means certainties) to reach the semi-finals, but intreguingly one of Federov, Movsesian, Kiril Georgiev and Akopian will be a semi-finalist. Round 4 that starts tonight see's Topalov-Kramnik and Shirov-Short as its headline matches. The key stages of the Championships are approaching. I'm looking forward to it.
Hope you enjoy this issue
Mark
The FIDE World Chess Championships opened on July 30th and run until August 29th 1999 in Las Vegas USA.
The FIDE Championships have reached the quarter final stages. The round 4 pairings are: Kramnik-Topalov, Adams-Dreev, Federov-Movsesian, Georgiev-Akopian, Polgar-Zvjaginsev, Gelfand-Khalifman, Nisipeanu-Ivanchuk and Short-Shirov.
Whilst the sheer volume of games has made it hard to follow the Championships, this stage will concentrate attention on just a few people. The top seeds Shirov and Kramnik have not as easier time of it as they might have expected. This is partially due to the draw having a "soft centre" due to the late withdrawal of Morozevich and Karpov (perhaps Tiviakov's call for the whole draw to be redone should have been heeded). Kramnik has to play Topalov, and although he has looked comfortable so far and is the favourite for this tie, this is not an easy match for him. Shirov has had to go to the tie-breaks both times (running out comfortable winner both times) but he again has a tough draw against Short (who has again got into top form for this KO event). If Kramnik will have to play the winner of Adams-Dreev whilst Shirov has to play the winner of Nisipeanu-Ivanchuk. Again both potentially difficult ties. In the middle of the draw there are a number of unsung players, Kiril Georgiev forced himself to this stage by upsetting Peter Svidler, the underrated Akopian took out Evgeny Bareev. Only Gelfand remains of the top seeds of the event (and he has the rather tough Khalifman as an opponent). One of Federov, Movsesian, Kiril Georgiev and Akopian will reach the semi-finals, none of the four would be regarded as pre-tournament favourites.
Day three highlights Tivakov beat Gurevich after two sudden death games, Nielsen beat Benjamin by winning their first sudden death game, Shaked beat Babula in the tie break. Other players who went through on tie-break were Tiviakov, Dolmatov, Psakhis, Yermolinsky, Dreev, Miles, Asrian, Khalifman and Stefansson. Milov lost his second game against Macieja and the playoff on the morning of the first game of the second round.
Stars (*) indicate the winner of the tie. First named player was white in game one.
Slow time rate games 40 moves in 100 minutes, followed by 20 moves in 50 minutes, followed by all moves in 10 minutes. In addition there is a time increment of 30 seconds per move added to the players time after the completion of every move.
Rapid-play tie-break games The first series of two games will be played at 25 minutes per player + 10 seconds time increment. If required a second series of two games played at 15 minutes per player + 10 seconds time increment. If the match is still tied a series of sudden death games will be played. The first player to win goes through. White starts with 4 minutes and Black five minutes + 10 seconds time increment. If the match carries on too long in this mode (to be decided by the arbiter) then a single decisive game will be played. White receives 6 minutes and black 5 minutes (no increment, black goes through in the event of a draw).

Below are the results for round two of the FIDE Championships, the stage at which the strongest players in the event enter.
ROUND 2 DAY 1
The highest rated players in the competition entered in round two and the first
days play left some of them in danger of not surviving their first tie. Alexei
Shirov engaged in a sharp fight against Ivan Sokolov and lost. Rising star
Ruslan Ponomariov defeated Veselin Topalov. There was interest too in Gata
Kamsky. He was playing his first game in two years after giving up chess and
becoming a medical student It started well, he had a smooth win against
Khalifman.
Some other interesting results: Judit Polgar beat Peter Nielsen, Krasenkow lost to Tony Miles, Korchnoi beat Dolmatov, Asrian beat Sadler, Ivanchuk beat Wahls, Gelfand beat Speelman, Tiviakov drew against Kramnik, Short beat Fridman and Milos beat Salov.
First named player is white in game one.
Slow time rate games 40 moves in 100 minutes, followed by 20 moves in 50 minutes, followed by all moves in 10 minutes. In addition there is a time increment of 30 seconds per move added to the players time after the completion of every move.
ROUND 2 DAY TWO
Tough play from the top players in trouble and a Kamsky protest are the highlights from day 2.
Alexei Shirov levelled his match against Ivan Sokolov in only 24 moves with black. An unfashionable variation of the Kings Indian Defence was chosen by Shirov and he seemed to stand well quite quickly. Michal Krasenkow was another seed in need of a win with black. He managed to persuade Miles into a position where it was a race between Miles' Kingside attack and Krasenkow's Queenside attack which arrived first after Miles became bogged down. Topalov got a big opening advantage against Ponomariov and used it to win pawns and eventually the game.
Gata Kamsky lost a difficult to understand, game to Alexander Khalifman and launched a protest about the behaviour of players surrounding his game.
"This letter is to make a request regarding the rules of play. During the game of Khalifman-Kamsky, certain players, Sakaev, (who resides at the same city as Mr. Khalifman) Yermolinsky and Smirin disturbed me greatly. After these players finished their games, (during the first half-hour!), they then proceeded to analyze the positions in the hallway. After their discussions, they would visit my table, making gestures and pulling faces. I felt that their actions were clearly helpful to my opponent, Mr. Khalifman.
In the Olympiad there is a very clear rule that after the players finish their games they are not allowed back into the playing area. This rule is to prevent collusion amongst the players. I believe that this sensible rule should be applied to the World Championship as well. In short, when the players finish their games, they should act as spectators and remain in the spectator area, not the area of play.
In particular, I request that the above-mentioned players be given notice, to stay out of the playing area, after they have finished their games. After all, this is a World Chess Championship and not just a St.Petersburg Championship."
Dolmatov beat Korchnoi to save his match and take it to a tie-break as did Zoltan Almasi against Peng.
GONE
Those eliminated in the second round were, Wahls, Aleksandrov, Ehlvest, Bauer, Tiviakov, Speelman, Aronian, Fridman, Kotronias, Salov, Sadler, Dizdar, Shaked, Hamdouchi, Macieja. Gulko, and Kobalija. They were joined by Azmaiparashvili (who had a terrible time against Nisipeanu having only one decent position out of the opening, the one he lost by overreaching in game 4), Ponomariov, Sakaev, Smirin, Antonio, Peng, Kamsky, Ivan Sokolov, Tkachiev, Dolmatov, Stefansson, Miles and Yermolinsky.

Jonathan Berry reports: Six players tied for top spot in the 6th annual Financial Concept Group International Open at North Bay, Ontario, Canada, August 4th-8th 1999. A raccoon sacrificed itself to the mighty god Transformer, resulting in a 5-hour power outage in much of North Bay, and forcing the suspension of eleven games from the fifth round until the next morning. The big excitement, not counting the close to psychotic pairings of the last round by yours truly, was the IM Norm achieved by 15-year-old Mark Paragua of the Philippines, with half a point to spare. A lot of exciting chess was played at North Bay, not the least the final game to finish, between Mark Paragua and Latvian grandmaster Normunds Miezis. A complex minor piece ending went right down to the final two minutes before Mr. Miezis took Mr. Paragua's knight, leaving a totally drawn position.
