1) Introduction

My thanks to Ian Rogers, John Henderson, Malcolm Pein, Bobby Ang, Sinisa Joksic, Chiacs, Anjo Anjewierden, Lubo Ftacnik, Richard Palliser, Europe-Echecs, Barbara Watson, John Donaldson, Ole and Carlos Penin, and all those who helped with this issue.

A hectic week of international chess saw first and foremost the start of the FIDE Championships in Las Vegas. There were few small controversies at the early stages but nothing too major. It looks like settling into an exciting event. The final stages of the first round will finish tonight and then the top rated players. I will be covering the event daily on TWIC's pages.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) FIDE World Chess Championships start

The FIDE World Chess Championships opened on July 30th and run until August 29th 1999 in Las Vegas USA.

The opening ceremony where FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov declared the event open on Friday night at a lavish opening ceremony which included welcome messages from US President Bill Clinton and IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch. The IOC was represented by Vice President Anita de France who welcomed FIDE into the IOC fold, a theme taken up by President Ilyumzhinov in his address. President Ilyumzhinov expressed his pleasure that FIDE was running an event under the IOC umbrella and at a press conference yesterday he said that chess would be a demonstration sport at the Sydney Olympics. It also emerged that Hong Kong is a possible venue for the next FIDE KO in 2000 and President Ilyumzhinov confirmed that he will be holding a knockout event every year. President Ilyumzhinov also took a swipe at what he called " the ambitions of some of our leading players ". Both FIDE champions; Zsuzsa Polgar and Anatoly Karpov have refused to play in Las Vegas and thrown their respective championship cycles into chaos. Garry Kasparov and Vishy Anand are also absent. While Ms Polgar can point to FIDE's inability to find a sponsor for a women's title match for over a year and now her newly born child, Karpov has simply held the organisation to ransom.

Ilyumzhinov optimism as to the prospects of chess appearing in the Sydney Olympics is not borne out by the facts. Sydney will not be having any demonstration events at all and chess will not be part of the event according to organisers of the Sydney event contacted by Ian Rogers on August 2nd.

There was more controversy when the San Francisco Chronical and the Scotsman reported comments from the controversial Shiloh Quinn Karpov's agent and lawyer. "..he declared that it's a matter of where Karpov would now enter the competition to defend his title." " "The only issue on the table at the moment is that he will play only the challenger, he will not play anyone other than the winner of this series," Quinn said. "That's exactly the way they did before [in Lausanne, 1997] the winner of the series got to play Karpov. This is the way it has always been in chess. FIDE is supposed to find a challenger for the champion." In reply, FIDE's executive director, Emanuel Omuku, stated that "Karpov has come to a mutual understanding with FIDE that the issue will be put before the court of arbitration for sports in Lausanne." "

Summing up the feelings of many in the chess world Ilyumzhinov said that Karpov's reported stance was "a joke".

There was one more controversial point to settle before play got underway. With two players missing from the second round Morozevich and Karpov, the organisers had to decide who to replace them. They decided to put two reserves (Milov and Dreev) straight into the second round which brought a protest from Krasenkow (supported by Tiviakov) as he was the highest seeded player not in the second round. At the players meeting this decision was changed with Milov and Dreev going to the first round and Krasenkow and Federov to the second. This left Milov high and dry, he was playing in Switzerland and planned to arrive in time only for the second round. He was defaulted in round one game one against Macieja as he was not there. Milov arrived in time for round one game two and on appeal he won the right to play his round one day one game on the day set aside for playoffs. The appeals committee apologised to Macieja but said although the decision was somewhat unfair on him the greater injustice would have been to forfeit Milov.

FIDE Round 1 Results

There were a number of upsets on day one of the FIDE Championships. Upsets included: Kotsur over Dolmatov, Andres Rodriguez over Asrian, Daniel Fridman over Adianto, Lev Aronian over Rozentalis, Tal Shaked over Babula, Ralf Akesson over Miles, and Barua over Khalifman.

Day two saw Khalifman, Asrian, Rodriguez, Miles, Babula and Dolmatov recover from losing their first round games to tie their matches. There were only a few real surprise results. Key results included Fridman eliminating Adianto, Kobalija beating DeFirmian and Aronian beating Rozenthalis. Through to the second round are: Akopian, Sokolov, Milos, Fridman, Wahls, Nisipeanu, Speelman, Lautier, Andersson, Tkachiev, Magem, Antonio, Ehlvest, Aleksandrov, Dizdar, Bauer, Aronian, Gulko, Kotronias, Peng, Kobalija, Hamdouchi, Leitao and Ponomariov. There are 12 ties to be resolved tomorrow including Milov's round one default which he will be allowed to play tomorrow after the default went to appeal. So there were just two no-shows in round one, Hakki and Bagheri.

Tonight will see the playoffs and completion of round one. Round 2, the round of 64 see's the entry of the stronger players into the event.

There will be detailed coverage every day on TWIC's main pages.

Stars (*) indicate the winner of the tie. First named player was white in game one.

8) Lippstadt 1999

The Lippstadt GM-Tournament started July 22nd 1999. The event was a category 9 tournament. There is an unusual form of scoring with three points for a win and one for a draw (although to be rated the results will have to be submitted normally). P ConNers was a computer program. The scores are given in normal order with the alternate scores after (as last year the finishing order came out correct using the normal scoring system). The event was won by Vigen Mirumian on 21 points level with Roman Slobodjan, both had five wins and six draws, Mirumian had the better SoBerg score.

10) Krush-Ftacnik match

Lubo Ftacnik reports: Irina Krush played yet another training match with Lubomir Ftacnik during his stay in Kopec summer chess camp in Lawrenceville in New Jersey. All previous matches with Bisguier, Browne, Fedorowicz and Shaked Tal were held with normal time control of tournament chess. Due to the preparation for the different time control that will be used at some women competition sponsors of Irina R§D Publishing asked for time control of 25 min + 10 sek increments in a 4 game match. IM Kopec was ready to arrange the match at his rented premises om 14.-15.7.1999 and some 70 campers made for a good audience. The games were hard fought, but Krush failed to find an antidote to the Gruenfeld opening knowledge of her senior oponent. In the third game 43...g5? was a real mistake, but both players have missed 44.Rh1! with enormous problems for the defending party. The result 1:3 is a decent achievement considering the ratings of both players.

15) News of John Watson

According to Barbara Watson, his sister, John Watson the IM and chess author is slowly recovering from his stroke. He is out of the rehab hospital [as of last week] and in an assisted living facility [still in Las Vegas, where he had the stroke], so he's beginning to be more independent. He is still significantly paralyzed on his right side although he has recovered some use of some muscles. The chess community has been remakably generous. His fund is almost $35,000, which includes a $10,000 donation from the US Chess Federation. This fund will help defray hospital & doctors' bills and be used towards ongoing physical therapy. Contributions to the John Watson Medical Fund should be sent to Barbara Watson at 143 River Road, Gill, MA, 01376, USA.
