The Sarajevo tournament looks set to go ahead with the first round on Monday May 17th. After Kasparov's recent results and play expections of more great chess from him will be very high. Vladimir Kramnik withdrew from the event to be replaced by Nigel Short who hasn't had the invitations he deserves recently in spite of the recent increase in his rating.
The TWIC CD is currently being pressed and should be available very shortly.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The Sonsbeek SNS Chess Tournament took place in Arnhem (NED) May 2nd - 9th. This was a double round all play all event as part of the centennial celebrations of the beautiful Park Sonsbeek in the city of Arnhem. Viktor Korchnoi and Matthew Sadler shared first place with 4/6, Korchnoi defeated Sadler in round 4.

There will be a Category 19 tournament in Sarajevo starting Monday 17th May. The players include Kasparov, Short, Shirov, Morozevich, Adams, Topalov, Leko, Bareev, Timman and Sokolov. Full coverage on twic's pages during the event. Note that Kramnik withdrew (for, it is said, "political reasons") to be replaced by Short. This is Kasparov's last scheduled major tournament (he hopes for a World Championship match towards the end of the year) for this year. After his dominant performances at Wijk aan Zee and Linares he will surely aim for a huge result here.
The 34th Capablana Memorial is underway. The event runs May 7th - 22nd 1999. In the Category 12 Elite group sees Ivan Morovic, Anthony Miles, Suat Atalik, Alexander Baburin, Michele Godena, Alejandro Hoffman, Luis Comas, Roman Slobodjan, Reinaldo Vera, Jesús Nogueiras, Julio Becerra, Walter Arencibia, Frank de la Paz and Lázaro Bruzón play.

Lubomir Ftacnik reports : The town of Znojmo has some 40.000 and inhabitants has been the venue of an open tournament for women for the last 13 years. No small feat given the change of regime, the split of Czechoslovakia and with all the changes of the last few years. This year featured a small festival with six different events centered around the international women's open Czech Rapid Chess Championships for 1999. The top places were taken by three women IMs, closely followed by a strong group of players from the Slovak republic. The field was given international flair by the participation of Cynolter Bogarne of Hungary sharing 21st place with 4,5 points and with Cathy Rogers of Australia sharing 32nd place on 3,5 points. A new generation of young girls was competing in the Princess of Znojmo, but for them the number of rounds was reduced to 7. The evening of the first day is traditionally reserved for a blitz tournament, where women and girls compete on equal terms with men. Their success was quite respectable in the mixed field of 73 players where the players were mostly men. On top of the regular program two matches were played as a side show. The local heroes from Znojmo Zdenek Molik and Peter Adam played a 6 game rapid match, whilst GMs Rogers,Ian and Ftacnik,Lubomir trusted their energy only for four hard fought games. To be honest, they shared responsibility for a tandem simul on 30 boards on the evening of Friday 7.5.99. It was a hard work with fighting opponents and guessing each others ideas for 4 hours, in the end the opponents have managed to secure three draws. In the show match itself all games were decided on time with a special twist. Mutual time trouble with both flags down in the first game prevented Ftacnik from realizing an advantage, games two and three saw the losing side run out of time. The last one ended with a gentlemanly draw, when Rogers accepted peace offer in completely lost endgame, when his opponent had already run out of time. Unfortunatelly only these four games are on offer from a huge creative output of a fine weekend 7.-9.5. for chess in Znojmo.
