1) Introduction

My thanks to Mihai Panait, Hassan Khaled, Venkatachalam Saravanan, Rod McShane, Tobias Pettersson, Jakub Fuksik, Alain Talon, Aleksander Czerwonski, Gary Bekker, Antonio Bento, Laszlo Nagy, William Wright, Michael Freeman, Kolachala Kalyan, Stewart Reuben and all those who helped with this issue.

Not a big week for top chess but there is a lot of chess in this issue non-the-less. The big story is the situation over the Kasparov-Anand match. The next move is in the hands of Bessel Kok and Serge Grimaux in the light of Anand's wish to have the match later than they envisaged.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Anand "still considering" match offer

Businessman and chess fan Bessel Kok has been in negotiations with Kasparov and Anand since March 12th to try and bring them together for a match for "The Ultimate World Chess Championship" in October this year. Kok has brought in Canadian entrepreneur Serge Grimaux to promote and organise the event and also GM Fridrik Olafsson (former FIDE President) and Dr. William Wirth. Kasparov has accepted their proposals for the match with a prize fund of US$3,000,000: US$2,000,000 for the winner and US$1,000,000 to the loser and to put on the line the title of World Chess Champion he holds. However in a press release from the promoters on Sunday it was made clear that Anand had not accepted yet and that there was a deadline of Friday, April 23, 1999.

In an interview with the Indian paper, Indian Express http://www.indian-express.com/ie/daily/19990425/isp25004.html he said he was unconcerned about his bad result at Dos Hermanas saying that he had simply played too much in the last few months. He commented that he had been approached by Bessel Kok about a match with Kasparov and was "still considering it". On the deadline that has just passed he said "I can't really make a comment on that" but asked about a match against Kasparov he said "You will get to know it soon." His crowded schedule for the rest of the year was mentioned and he was asked again about the match and he said "Maybe towards the end of the year".

Bessel Kok now needs to decide whether the offer remains on the table.

3) 1st Gonfreville International

The First Gonfreville International was a 14 player all-play-all and turned out to be a battle for first between Normunds Miezis and Alexandre Lesiege. Miezis beat Lesiege with black in round 9 and he finished half a point ahead of the French Canadian. There are currently no games for the later rounds. Coverage at: http://www.chez.com/notzai/actu/gonfreville.html.

12) Oceanic Zonal

Gary Bekker reports: Zone 3.2b (Oceanic Zonal) concluded on Wednesday 21st April.

Oceania Zonal - Final results: In a tense final round in the Oceanic Zonal Chess Championships, Sydney's Vladimir Feldman defeated IM Alex Wohl to win the event with 7/9. He earned the International Master title during the tournament and he will now represent the Oceania Zone at the World Chess Championships to be held in Las Vegas in two months time.

His wife, Irina, and 14 year-old David Smerdon came equal second with IM Russell Dive, of New Zealand, on 6/9 and also earned the IM title. Sensationally GM Darryl Johansen let Dive have a gift checkmate in one, after being distracted by the result on board one. Numerous others scored 50% or more and gained the FIDE Master title.

Laura Moylan won the women's event and has been asked to play in the World Women's Ch's in Kishinev, Moldova. The ACF hopes that Laura will be awarded the WIM title, depite concerns raised about the smaller than usual turnout for the women's event.

Leading scores in the Men's event, shown in correct count-back order, are: 7.0 WFM Vladimir Feldman 6.0 David Smerdon IM Russell Dive (NZL) WIM Irina Berezina 5.5 GM Darryl Johansen IM Alex Wohl FM Chris Depasquale Alex Kulashko (NZL)

Final scores in the Women's event are: 7.5 Laura Moylan 6.0 Geraldine Johns-Putra WFM Veronica Klimenko 5.0 Narelle Szuveges 3.0 Catherine Lip 2.5 Andrea Constantinou

My thanks to Ian Rogers for the games.

15) Oberlin Open

William Wright reports: 88 players traveled to the small college town of Oberlin OH just outside Cleveland on April 16-18 to contest a guaranteed prize fund of $6000. I feel obligated to make a small commentary that many players have voiced displeasure at the proliferation of tournaments with based-on prizes. Poor support in tournaments such as this are the reason why. However, the top section was well-represented with 4 GMs (Alexanfer Goldin, Alex Woytkiewicz, Gregory Serper and Anatoly Lein), 2 IMs (Calvin Blocker and Enrico Sevillano) as well as 8 other masters. Out of this field, IM Calvin Blocker scored 4.5/5 to take clear first ahead of the higher rated players in the event. This despite the added burden of having Black against the two GMs that he faced. Prize winners and games below.

Open: Blocker (4.5/5, $1000); Goldin, Rajlich (4/5, $425); Serper (3.5/5, $150)

16) Ortvin Sarapu

Michael Freeman reports:

New Zealand's "Mr Chess", Ortvin Sarapu, has died in Auckland on Tuesday 14th April 1999, of a heart attack, aged 75. Sarapu left Estonia during the Second World War and in 1950 emigrated to NZ, where he began his domination of the sport. He was New Zealand's second International Master (after Bob Wade), winning that honour in 1966. From 1951 he went on to win the NZ title on a record 20 occasions. He was awarded an MBE for his services to chess. Ortvin competed in 10 Chess Olympiads and many other international events. These included the 1967 Interzonal event.
