A lot of chess this week headed by the Dos Hermanas tournament. It started with a terrible disappointment as Morozevich had to withdraw before the event started with a fever. But after this there has been some great chess.
Hope you enjoy this issue

After a year off the Dos Hermanas tournament returned as a Category 19 event. The event started badly with Alexander Morozevich having to withdraw because he had a fever. He was replaced by Boris Gelfand who arrived in time for round two. After five rounds the event is lead by Michael Adams and Vladimir Kramnik with 3.5/5. Undoubtedly the biggest shock has been the start of one of the favourites Viswanathan Anand. He was demolished in round one on the black side of a Sicilian by Judit Polgar, he then ran into some good opening preparation by Vladimir Kramnik in round 3 and lost and in round 5 he was losing right up to and including the moment he agreed a draw with Peter Svidler. Karpov, Gelfand and Topalov lie in 3rd place both with one win each. Karpov, especially will be looking to pick up some ratings points in the event and had one of his nicest wins in some time against Peter Svidler.

The annual Grand Prix de Bordeaux rapidplay tournament took place April 9-10 in Bordeaux, France. Four players competed, last years champion Alexei Shirov, Peter Leko and two local players Christian Bauer and Laurent Fressinet. The final was won by Peter Leko against Alexei Shirov. Shirov played the game of the event in beating Fressinet in his first game (the Frenchman missed chances in the second).

The "Redbus Chess Knock-out" took place alongside the Southend Chess Congress. Cliff Stanford, founder of Demon Internet and now Redbus Investments, put up £7,400 worth of prize money with the aim of promoting British Chess. [Redbus have recently launched an independent facility located in London's Docklands specialising in the secure management and siting of internet servers]
The main event was a four round knockout event with 16 leading British players. They played two games a day at 100 minutes + 30 seconds per move followed by various rapidplay games to resolve ties over the Easter Weekend 2-5th April.
Round 1 (April 2nd) Speelman 1.5-0.5 Ward; Levitt 0.5-1.5 Davies; Lalic (won the playoff 2-0) 1-1 Pert; Sheldon 1-1 Rowson (won the playoff 2-0) ; Plaskett 1-1 Miles (won after a second series of playoffs); Chandler 1-1 McNab (won after a second series of playoffs); King 0-2 Pein; Ledger 0.5-1.5 Emms
Round 2 (April 3rd) Speelman 1.5-0.5 Davies; Lalic 1.5-0.5 Rowson; Plaskett (won after a second series of playoffs) 1-1 McNab; Pein 1.5-0.5 Emms;
Round 3 (April 4th) Lalic (won after playoff)1-1 Speelman; Plaskett 2-0t Pein.
Final (April 5th) Lalic 1-1 Plaskett, title shared.
Malcolm Pein on the Redbus event
Round 1
The first round of the Redbus Knockout saw some entertaining play at the Southend Civic Centre as the top seeds showed they meant business in the chase for the pounds 2000 first prize. There is over pounds 7000 at stake in all put up by Cliff Stanford, the founder of Demon Internet.
The traditional open tournament and other graded sections are also taking place and the Southend Congress boasts a total prize fund of over 10,000 pounds, probably a record for a weekend event in the UK.
Jon Speelman defeated Chris Ward with typically precise positional play on the queenside and once he had reached a rook and pawn endgame with an extra pawn his technique was excellent as usual.
Tony Miles was impressive if only for the way he completely equalised against Jim Plaskett so quickly and comfortably with the black pieces and he will look to win the tie with the advantage of the white pieces in game 2.
WIM Ruth Sheldon had a promising position against IM Jonathan Rowson but was outplayed in the complications.
There was only one surprise result as GM Danny King lost to your correspondent ( hoorah ! ) after building up a superior position and an advantage on the clock of thirteen minutes to five. King played too quickly and lost material to a combination.
Round 2
THE semi-finals of the Redbus Knockout will line up with GM John Speelman facing Bogdan Lalic and GM Jim Plaskett playing IM Malcolm Pein after some tremendous matches at the Southend Civic Centre.
In particular, Some of the contests that went to 10-minute mini matches were particularly exciting and none more so than the quarter-final between Plaskett and Scottish GM Colin McNab.
Plaskett won game one rather straightforwardly, although he needed to go on a remarkable walk with his king to avoid perpetual check with his opponent's king in a mating net. McNab had to win game two to stay in the match and this he did in style, finishing a sustained attack with a queen sacrifice.
The first ten-minute game went to the wire with fortune fluctuating as both players raced connected passed pawns towards the queening square. In the end, both made a new queen and McNab, in sight of a perpetual but with only a few seconds left on the clock, drove Plaskett's king down the board where it escaped to victory.
Game 2 saw another amazing fightback from the Scot. Plaskett, black, rapidly obtained the advantage on the board and on the clock. Only needing a draw, he tried to simplify and managed to blunder his last pawn and lose what had been a completely drawn position, with bishop and pawn against knight and two pawns all on the same side.
Plaskett is a renowned blitz player, and after losing the toss he produced a marvellous conter-attack from a cramped Hedgehog set-up and rampaged through McNab's position, playing nearly all his moves instantly.
It was deeply impressive and I have resolved to end his semi-final match against Plaskett one way or the other before the sudden death blitz.
Speelman was impressive in his first quarter-final game over Nigel Davies but needed a lot of luck to survive with the black pieces in the return. Malcolm Pein completed a 2-0 victory over GM Danny King in round one and upset the form book again in the quarter-finals with victory over England Number 6 John Emms.
Round 3
Grandmasters Jim Plaskett and Bogdan Lalic will contest the final of Redbus Knockout at the Southend Civic Centre after semi-final victories over Malcolm Pein and Jon Speelman respectively. The victor will collect a cheque for pounds 2000 and the Redbus trophy.
Plaskett had a comfortable 2-0 win over your correspondent who went wrong in the endgame in the morning and blundered quickly in the afternoon but Lalic needed the sudden death blitz game to break Speelman's resistance.
In the first game Lalic played rather insipidly with white and a quick draw was agreed and when Speelman looked to be a clear pawn up in the return, few would have bet against him but Lalic held on. The ten minute speed chess tie breakers ended 1-1 but only after Speelman had won a rook and pawn endgame a pawn down. Finally, in the sudden death blitz with five minutes each on the clock Lalic found a flaw in one of the England no4's tactical tricks and won his opponent's queen. Speelman put up great resistance but eventually ran out of time.
I intended to try the manoeuvre Nh2-f1-e3-d5 but got side-tracked. 32.g4 was an error, waiting and then exchanging rooks would have held the position. Black's idea of 37...Nh4+ and 39...g4+ was excellent but I should have played 42.Bg5 Nxe4+ 43 Kxg4 Kg7 44 Be7 Kf7 45 f6 when I would have had much better drawing chances. In my haste I overlooked that the king and pawn endgame arising after 42.Bg5 Nxe4+ 43.Kxg4 Nxg5 44.Kxg5 is drawn and not lost for White.

The Final (information by John Henderson)
After two draws - one in 60, the other in 21 moves - in the serious time-control of 100 minutes and 30 seconds per move, Plaskett and Lalic should have been gearing themselves up for the two 10 minute mini-matches, and if still drawn, the 5 minute sudden death play-off - has had happened with the other rounds in the tournament. Instead, the tournament descended into a cop-out rather than a knockout when the arbiter approached the players to inform them that, if they wished, they could share the title and the (UK)3,000 prize money.
Speaking to the Scotsman, the sponsor, Cliff Stanford - the entrepreneur who borrowed (UK)20,000 to set-up Demon Internet, selling on to Scottish Power last year for (UK)66 million - said that he thought it would have been unfortunate for such a hard-fought tournament to have ended under the vagaries of a sudden death play-off. He further explained that, as the tournament had been organised in the space of just two months, he and the organisers hadn't finalised all the eventualities for a tournament such as this, though promised next year that the tournament would be bigger and better with one overall winner.
The day after the sponsor Mr Stanford disclosed he's going to propose that both players decide the outcome by having a play-off over the Internet, to be hosted on his website (www.redbus.co.uk).
Stanford's Internet play-off idea, was supported in principle by both Lalic and Plaskett, will see the two players playing in the next few months in a match, over the net, from two different parts of the country.
The winner, Lubomir Ftacnik sends the games and results of the Mechanics Institute Bronstein jubilee 75th birthday rapid tournament held in San Francisco 6th-7th April 1999. Only five GMs played as the qualifier from the preliminaries McCambridge did not want to play. The average rating of 2575.1 was in the region of a cat 14. FIDE. The pre-tournament favourite for first place, Yasser Seirawan was in terrible form, and the event was won by Ftacnik on his way back from the Mexican Championships (see below) and to score his best ever rapid play tournament performance. Most of the games were hard fought and Ilya Gurevich , working in San Francisco as bank trader for one and a half years, scored the most wins. Browne beat Dzindzichashvili in round 8 in a turbulent game and helped to tame the challenge for win from the seasoned GM now also living in San Francisco (since september 1998). The Mechanics Institute is a major institution in San Francisco, with history dating to the middle of 19th century. It helped to educate the people trapped in the West after the end of gold rush and gradually built a library of 250 000, often very rare books. Many treasures went up in flames at the beginning of the 20th century, also the major earthquake of 1906 did not exactly help. But the Mechanics Institute has bounced back and gone from strength to strength. The chess club has a great tradition, it has hosted every chess champion with the exception of Botvinnik and Kasparov. These days the club is very active in Bay area, chess director IM John Donaldson can count on help and support of Mr.Falconer and Mr.Pinto, both very decent players and board members in position to do a lot for chess. It looks like not only New York will be able to claim lively chess scene with attractive events.
David Bronstein will play via the internet in a 75th Anniversary event organised by Eric Schiller at the Mechanics Institute later in the year. The Bronstein Jubilee will implement a number of David Bronstein's original competition ideas. Each match will have 4 games at g/20+10 second "Bronstein" increment. An open qualifier will allow players to vie for one of the qualifying slots in the final, which will include Bronstein and additional invitees. Prizes will be based on performance plus the public will get to vote (via the Internet) on artistic merit of the games and special prizes will be awarded there.
