XVI Ciudad de Linares 12 games Category 15: Enghien les Bains 20 games Manhattan Chess Club March International 24 games First Saturday, March 48 games Bad Woerishofen open 11 games Dyfed Open 2 games
My thanks to Club Kasparov, Europe Echecs, Paul Orton, Laszlo Nagy, El Pais, net64, John Fernandez, Gerhard Hund, Sergey Kishkurno, Gerardo Fernández and all those who helped with this issue.
A quiet week saw the finish of Linares (almost everything had been decided by last week) and a gain of over 110 points for Kasparov on the event. He'll be next seen in the Sarajevo tournament that starts on May 16th. Second placed Anand and Kramnik (and a number of others from Linares) play in one or both of the Amber tournament and Dos Hermanas that will give us our diet of top chess over the coming weeks.
I have not yet heard any reports from the FIDE meeting of the 14th when the final details of their World Championships were set to be decided. A dispute between Kasparov and the organisers of the Advanced Chess match in Leon has meant that Kasparov will not be playing, a replacement is being looked for and they will play Anand in this four game exhibition event.
I hope for a few more games for next week's issue of TWIC.
Hope you enjoy this issue
Mark
The Category 20 XVI Ciudad de Linares will run February 21-March 10th. This Category 20 event is likely to be the strongest of the year.
Garry Kasparov finished the Linares tournament with two draws. He chose the less critical 6. ...e5 against Leko to draw in round 13 and 1. Nf3 against Topalov in the final round (a decision he said he took just five minutes before play) although he got reasonable winning chances in this game. He had in any case demonstrated his clear number one status already, added to the evidence of Wijk aan Zee he obviously regarded his mission for these two events as being accomplished.
Anand and Kramnik tied for second after the Indian defeated Michael Adams in the final round. Neither Kramnik nor Anand seemed in top form yet Kramnik gained rating points and Anand held his rating. Their next outings are the Amber rapidplay starting tomorrow and the Dos Hermanas tournament at the start of April.
The top three were the only players to end on plus scores in the event. Peter Leko gained a few rating points in finishing 4th on 6.5 points. Both Topalov and Ivanchuk had rocky events and only losing a few points can be regarded as reasonably satisfactory in the end. Peter Svidler just leaked losses throughout the event in a very subdued performance and Adams went from top to bottom in an event he'll want to forget.

There was no news at press of the FIDE meeting on 14th March where the final details of the FIDE World Championships in Caesar's Palace Casino, Las Vegas were to be discussed. The dates are said to be be July 26 - August 28. However according to FIDE the prizemoney has been confirmed at the announced $2.4m (that is $3m less 20% or $600,000 which is FIDE's share).
Garry Kasparov has cancelled his scheduled "Advanced Chess" [a combination of man and machine, tested out with Topalov last year] match with Anand in Spain. The event was due to take place in Leon 11-14th June. The organisers have already said they will attempt to find a top flight replacement for the match which will still go ahead with a different opponent for Anand.
Kasparov announced the cancellation at his final press conference of Linares on Wednesday.
Kasparov said "I want to teach the organisers a lesson on how to treat the World Champion" he said adding correspondence received by his representative Owen Williams on the subject of the match was "deplorable".
The heart of the matter was a contractual dispute. Kasparov had asked for compensation in the event of the match being cancelled and the organisers had not accepted his conditions. In addition Kasparov objected to the "offensive language" of the communiations to him. However Spaniards who have seen the communication blame the translation of the document into English for causing the problem. They say it has both errors of fact and of tone.
Both the organisers and Kasparov had been in frequent communication since November 20th when Owen Williams confirmed Kasparov's participation. However it was in the drawing up of the final contracts that the dispute occurred.
The organisers believe that Kasparov proposed that in the event the match didn't take place he would have to return only the money paid to him until then. As he was due only to be paid anything two days before the match the organisers objected as there wouldn't be any compensation for their organisational costs.
They replied to the proposal that the conditions were "completely unacceptable" which caused Kasparov offense. However Spaniards claim this is quite a weak expression in Spanish, but is obviously very strong in English. In spite of a number of communications between the organisers and Kasparov trying to clarify the situation including the provision of the original documents in Spanish the answer has remained no.
The Enghien les Bains tournament ran March 3rd-12th 1999. The category 15 was won by Joel Lautier with his best result for many years. The tournament was a battle between Lautier and Victor Bologan who started with 6/7 before going down to a drastic 10 move loss to Lautier in round 8 and he put in a pretty shallow performance in the last round to lost to Ponomariov. Nevertheless both Bologan and Lautier gained a lot of rating points in this Category 15 event. Bologan didn't draw a single game in the event, winning 6 and losing 3. ELO favourites Valery Salov, who hasn't played for some time, and Matthew Sadler scored 4 and 3.5 respectively for poor results.

John Fernandez reports: The Manhattan Chess Club March International started March 5th and is a Category 10 event being covered live by ICC. Maurice Ashley defeated IM Adrian Negulescu in round 8 to score 6/8 and get his 3rd and final GM norm. Also, FM Greg Shahade defeated IM Joshua Waitzkin to move to 4/8, he needs a final round draw against GM John Fedorowicz to get himself an IM norm. GM Timoshenko who has dominated the event leads by a point but will play Ashley, who is the only player who can catch him in the final round.

Gerhard Hund has reported on the 15th Schachfestival in Bad Woerishofen. There were 326 participants (217 in the open and 109 in the Senior tournament). The event took place 5-14th March 1999. There was a five way tie between Konstantin Lerner (who had the best tie-break), Eingorn, Epishin, Vladimir Georgiev and Slobodjan. The player who attracted the most attention in the open was the lowly rated Clemens Allwermann. He has been the subject of numerous accusations in the German media and elsewhere after his fantastic results in the Böblinger Tournament of late last year. Nothing has been proven but his results from that event, are I understand, to be investigated to establish whether he had outside help during his games. There are a number of games available of his from Bad Woerishofen as his board attracted a lot of spectators.
