My thanks to Ram Soffer, Maximiliano Alvarez, John Saunders, Nigel Freeman, Antonio Bento, Michael Atkins, Albert Silver, Julio Alberto González, Ian Murray and all those who helped with this issue.
Kasparov duly won the Hoogovens tournament in Wijk aan Zee, in what he described as the tournament of his life. In the end he won by only half a point from his closest rival Viswanathan Anand. Both players showed their style, Kasparov energised throughout the event played the more active chess, Anand made use of his natural languid style. A match between the two (they last played in 1995) would be difficult to predict. Nevertheless after a disappointing and relatively inactive year Kasparov has reaffirmed himself and the man to shoot at. Linares will be another test for the pair at the end of the month.
FIDE should be in a position to clarify what is happening about their Championships this week or early next. They still believe it will be in Las Vegas, that remains to be seen, the American organisers had withdrawn last week, can they get back on track?
Hope you enjoy this issue

The Hoogovens tournament in Wijk aan Zee ran January 15-31st 1999. My thanks to Niek Verweij of Lost Boys for his help.
Garry Kasparov's won the Category 17 61st Hoogovens, Wijk aan Zee tournament with 10/13. The event included a seven game winning run from Kasparov. This run was brought to an end by a poor game where Kasparov forgot some old theory and was quickly demolished. However it was his only real weak moment in the event. Anand and Kasparov met in round 10 and the game was a draw. Kasparov himself thought his game against Peter Svidler, that eventually sealed his win in the event was his best and most important, but he is likely to be remembered for his win against Topalov in round 4. Kasparov described the event as "this was by far the best tournament in my life" believing he met some very strong resistance from all his opponents. He expressed the belief that due to computers his preparation is now the strongest it has ever been. "I can go into positions I wouldn't have dared play before. I do a lot of work and thanks to the computer, I just know the outcome of certain positions." (he cited his draw against Kramnik and his 12. ...e6 against Shirov as examples of positions which he could analyse only with the aid of computers and that he would not have thought to play before.
Undefeated and in second place was Viswanathan Anand. He too had a great tournament scoring 9.5 points, just half a point behind Kasparov and with a score that would normally have taken the event. He was less spectacular than Kasparov drawing a number of biteless games with black when his opponents wanted a draw but he won 5/6 of his games with white. It should be noted Kasparov had 7 whites to Anand's 6, a small advantage, that may have proved significant, especially in such a high scoring event. Nevertheless both players have a great deal to be pleased about the event. Kasparov said that he had already had an offer on the table for a $3m match if Anand wants it. However Anand may believe that he holds many of the best cards now if Kasparov wants a match against a credible opponent.
In third, performing almost exactly to his rating was Kramnik. He was ill for the final rounds but nevertheless was undefeated. Kramnik hasn't made a great impression recently, but he is still obviously world number 3.
In the four way tie for fourth, three players will have been delighted, Sokolov, Piket and Timman. Shirov, perhaps less so. He was probably only half a point short of achieving his own rating however. At the start of the event he talked about offers that he believes were never fully concrete from Kasparov for a match but seems to have been left in limbo after his victory over Kramnik for which he has not been paid. Events have perhaps moved on and only Anand's reluctance to play ball with Kasparov (I think especially over the timing of a match) may save Shirov's right to play Kasparov.
Ivanchuk, Svidler and Topalov all had their moments but ended with slightly disappointing results. Nevertheless they fully contributed to what has been a great tournament.

Marcel Winkels sends a gamescore first given by Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam in Vrij Nederland which was a reconstructed (by Kasparov) version of his blitz game against Anand. (The move order may not be 100%)

FIDE were maintaining this week that their Championships were going to be in Las Vegas on the dates specified. As reported last week the American organisers had terminated their involvement in the event. I'm pretty sure this was the case. Whether FIDE have new proposals for the organisers, a new organiser, or haven't recognised the situation is unclear. The next week should tell.

This year's national junior titles were held in sub-tropical Queensland, at Hervey Bay, whale-watching centre of Australia when some 2000 humpback whales take a break in the bay in August during their annual northern migration from Antarctic waters reports Ian Murray.
The four tournaments underlined the growing strength of junior chess down under - many of the players are already seasoned international campaigners from world and Asian age championships. David Smerdon won the Australian Junior event, Peter Jovanovic won the under 12's, Jasmine Lauer-Smith, Catherine Lip and Shiloh Norris scored 9.5/11 in the women's juniors. Robyn Gillett won the under 12 girls event.

Dr. Tor Rønnow of Denmark is carrying out a survey of chess
players. The purpose of the survey is to investigate, whether certain
profiles can be ascribed to strong players as opposed to weaker players -
then it might be clear, what the weaker players need to care about if they
want to improve their game. Stronger players are very much welcome to
participate. The survey has now moved to:

and also is available in Spanish at:
