A Happy and Prosperous New Year to everybody. 1999 starts with the main events being the regular Hastings, Pamplona and Reggio events starring. I've followed Alexander Morozevich since he won the last Lloyds Bank tournament with a record score a few years ago. He had a fantastic 1998 with an 8/9 score in an all-play-all and the Russian Championships. In Pamplona he has started with 6/7, so he may be one to watch in '99 too.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The "IX Ciudad de Pamplona" tournament (cat. XIII, Dec. 27-Jan.5th., free day Jan. 1st.) is underway reports Leontxo Garcia and Jesus Mena. The players are Alexander Morozevic, Xie Jun, Loek Van Wely, Emil Sutovsky, Michal Krasenkow, Miguel Illescas Cordoba, Luis Comas, Oscar de la Riva, Jesus de la Villa and Francisco Vallejo (who is 17 and the Spanish vice champion). Alexander Morozevich scorched to lead with 6/7 at the Pamplona tournament. He is a point and a half clear of Krasenkow and Van Wely. It is clear that the Russian Champion is now ready for another invitation to a superGM event after a period of poor form.

The 37th International Chess Tournament in Groningen ran December 19-30th this year with 2 Invitational tournaments. One for men and one for women, both a double round robin events for 6 players. Sergei Tiviakov, Zoltan Almasi, Vadim Milov, Alex Yermolinsky, Jeroen Piket and Karen Asrian played in the men's event. Average 2629 Category XVI.
There was a new way of distributing the prizes: - Everyone started with prize money equal to their rating in Dutch Gulders - The winner of a game getting 10% of the money equal to the rating of the opponent, the loser losing that 10%. If the game finished in a draw, the one with the higher rating paid the difference.
The Men's invitational event saw Sergei Tiviakov and Vadim Milov finish on 6/10 ahead of Zoltan Almasi 5.5. The women's event was won by Natalia Zhukova on 7/10 just ahead of Antoaneta Stefanova on 6.5 and Peng Zhaoqin on 6.
The open event saw three players, Sergei Movsesian, Vladimir Baklan and Vladimir Epishin all score 8.5/11. Movsesian won the event on tie-break, he had the only decisive game amongst these three leading players, he had beaten Baklan. Sarunas Sulskis finished in 4th on his own with 8 ahead of ten players on 7.5.

Sinisa Joksic reports: The Swiss Chess Tour has started with the Hilton open. A long time ago Basel organised few chess events, except for a few simultaneous exhibitions by Karpov. A strange situation for Basel with its great chess tradition. Nearby Alschwill was several times champion of Switzerland, during the time of Werner Hafner their famous president and owner of club. 116 participants played in the First New Year Open in the luxury Hilton Hotel. It takes place January 1-5 and is a seven round, Swiss system event. There are 38 titled players, 14 GMs, 17 IMs and 7 FIDE masters. After 4 rounds there is an unbelievable throng of players at the top, like in a bicylce race. There will be much to be decided in the three last rounds. Tukmakov came as the winner of Zurich Christmas tournament. Andrei Sokolov, can surprise and there are many experienced open players such as Cvitan, Gallagher, Bologan. Michael Atkins reports: 198 players came to chilly Washington DC this past weekend to compete in the Eastern Open. In an unusual, almost grandmasterless field, the only Grandmaster, Alex Ivanov, took clear first with a 7-1 score. He drew with runner up IM Larry Kaufman and NM Dmitry Schndeider. Schneider had a couple of impressive long endgame draws with the two highest rated players, Ivanov and IM Adrian Negulescu of Roumania and had a 2580 performance. One has to feel a little sorry for FM Nelson Castaneda as he was in clear first with 4-0 and managed only a draw in his last four games.
The winners were: Open - 1st - GM Alex Ivanov 7-1 2nd - IM Larry Kaufman 6.5 3rd - IMs Adrian Negulescu, Calvin Blocker, + Osman Palos and FM Emory Tate - 5.5 Top U 2400 - Dmitry Schneider - 6 Top U 2300 - Stanis Kriventsov - 5.5 Top U 2200 - Carl Boor - 4.5 Under 2200 - 1st = Vladimir Grechikhin 6.5 Under 1900 - 1st = Ruixin Yang 6.5 Under 1600 - 1st - Thomas Sifter 6.5 Under 1300 - ist - Denis Suprun 8-0
He additionally reports that the 1999 New York Open was cancelled due to problems with the hotel and unavailability of other venues in Manhattan. Really a shame for one of, if not THE strongest open tournament in the world to not happen next year. Future details available at http://w-w-w.com/nyopen/
This open ran December 26th - 31st. Nikolaus Stanec won the event alone with 6/7.

A review of the key results and events of 1998.
January -------- The year started with the conclusion of the FIDE Championships. Karpov eventually beating Viswanathan Anand in a tense speed chess playoff where Anand wrecked an extremely good position in game one after winning the last game of normal timerate games. Over the year its clear that no-one takes Karpov's victory and the FIDE title very seriously as the advantages of being seeded to the final were so great. Karpov did use the title to get the FIDE Championships which should now be just finishing postponed until 1999, something that has done little for his reputation amongst other players. The event was a 7 player double round all-play-all, the organisers wanted to keep the event as Category 21 after they failed to get Karpov to play. FIDE announced they were going for gamescore copyright, by the time they had reached the end of the year this had become so watered down as to be unenforcable and we will no doubt not hear anymore of this. Viswanathan Anand won the Linares tournament by half a point from Alexei Shirov who led until his loss to Svidler in the penultimate round. He was still second ahead of Kramnik and Kasparov in third. Off the board Kasparov wanted a match between Anand and Kramnik to decide who should play him in a World Championship match. Anand refused to take part, claiming a contractual obligation to FIDE and by virtue of his second place Shirov became the player to take on Kramnik. Linares ESP (ESP), II-III 1998 cat. June ---- Shirov beat Kramnik in their eliminator to play Garry Kasparov. The match was organised by the World Chess Council, the main financing to be organised by Luis Rentero (who later in the year had a very serious car accident). It became clear to the players that the finance was not in place and Kramnik was not paid in full for losing the match and Shirov was paid at all after the financing of the match with Kasparov fell through. Kasparov claims that Shirov later turned down a match for less money than originally planned and the Shirov-Kasparov match is now in limbo.
