My thanks to Net64, John Henderson, Jürgen Daniel, Laszlo Nagy, Luis Santos, Disney, Harald Grafenhofer, Jean-Christian Galli, Adrián Roldán and Rubén Casafús, Hassan Khaled, Michael Atkins, Rodolfo Arias, Gerhard Hund, and all those who helped with this issue.
Nick DeFirmian by winning the first game of the final of the US Championships as black is now strong favourite to take the title. A nerve-wracking playoff in Andorra was made worse by the lack of clear rules before the playoff took place which meant hours of wrangling over the format. It saw Loek Van Wely and Josef Dorfman eliminated. Plenty of other action from throughout the world with 1900 games in the issue.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The Zonal tournament for Western Europe took place in Andorra November 6th-15th. The event was a nine round swiss system event and finished in an eight way tie for first with only six places available. After discussions amongst the players that went on late into the evening before they had an eight player all play all rapidplay event on Sunday 15th to eliminate two players (a knockout was proposed.) Bauer and Speelman scored 4 Miles , Nijboer, Magem and Reinderman 3.5, these took the six qualifying places. Dorfman and Van Wely scoring 3 were the ones to miss out. Almost all the games were drawn and almost all the key results involved Jordi Magem. He lost to Speelman and Reinderman and beat Dorfman and Van Wely. Reinderman lost to Christian Bauer.

The 70th German Championship took place from 11/6/98 - 11/14/98 in Bremen. The event was won by Joerg Hickl who had the highest rated opponents from Christopher Lutz and Christian Gabriel, all of whom scored 6.5 points.
Jürgen Daniel continues his report from last week.
The last week twic-report ended with the question: "Who can stop Peter Enders ?". The answer is: He stopped himself. The Grandmaster from Erfurt unneccesarily sacrificed material in a good position against Matthias Wahls, who won the title in 1996 and 1997. It seemed, as Wahls would make it again, as luck was on his side in his two earlier games against Tischbierek and Müller. Tischbierek resigned in a draw-position impressed by Wahls´s ...Bc3 and Müller overlooked the consequences of Nxg7. In the eighth round Wahls drew against Christopher Lutz not risking too much in a g3-Najdorf Sicilian with White and now being on 6/8. In the meantime some other players scored the full point and the situation before the last round was: Wahls on 6/8, Lutz, Gabriel, Enders, Hickl and Luther on 5,5/8. The tie-break-system in this championships was the average-rating of your opponents seeing Hickl first in a potential tie-break.
Last round pairings were: Gabriel-Wahls Lutz-Luther Hickl-Enders
Last round pairings were: Gabriel-Wahls Lutz-Luther Hickl-Enders The first game to finish was Gabriel-Wahls. In time-trouble Wahls could not find the right moves in a position, that was assesed as at least equal by former German Coach GM Darga, who was giving comments for the spectators along with FM C.D. Meyer. At this moment Gabriel was German Champion. But shortly after that game it became clear, that Hickl would win his game and be the new champion. He beat Enders, who impressed the public with his entertaining and powerful chess. And not only the public: The organisers gave him a special price for his combative chess. Christopher Lutz, who had just finished his first book before the tournament (About Endgames !) could not do more than win a rook endgame with a pawn up. The prices were shared due to the Hort-System, getting 50% from your price money according to your place and 50% sharing with the other players of the same points. So instead of the initial 30.000/20.000/15.000 with three players scoring 6,5/9 now 25.833/20.833/18.333.
Champion Joerg Hickl played his best game beating Arthur Jussupow. Jussupow and Dautow, ranked No. 1 and 2, played a bad tournament, both finishing on +1. IM Roland Schmaltz, known from the ICC as one of the fastest and best players on the Internet made his 2nd. GM-Norm. FM Manfred Glienke, also known in German Chess Circles as "The Kaiser", made his final IM-Norm. Finally I would like to thank the organisers of SV Werder Bremen, headed by Dr.Till Schelz-Brandenburg, for providing such wonderful playing conditions and ambience.

Michael Atkins reports on the 5th Best Western Northern Virginia Open. Correspondence GM Dmitrij Barash proved again that correspondence players are also to be feared over the board as he was clear winner of this weekend's Best Western Mt. Vernon Northern Virginia Open. GM Michael Rohde trailed by 1/2 point and would have played Barash in the last round had he not reserved a last round bye to provide internet coverage of the US Championship on the USCF webpage. He was held to a draw by Yu Zhong Lu in the third round while trying to play his tournament game and provide commentary and even GMs get distracted. 62 players participated in this Virginia Chess Federation event.
