My thanks to Lost Boys, Europe Echecs, Shahcom, Rubén Casafús, Adrián Roldán, John Saunders, Peter Wilson, Hellas Chess Club, Stefan Muellenbruck, Net64 and all those who helped with this issue.
Viswanathan Anand is looking strong favourite to take the Tilburg Fontys tournament with only two rounds to go, his nearest rival, Peter Leko is a point behind. He's made it look almost easy in getting to this position. The US Championships have started in Denver, the Championships have a reputation for fighting chess and there should be some exciting struggles ahead. Karpov put some recent bad form behind him to take the Cap D'Agde rapidplay although in the end one second was all that seperated him and Boris Gelfand.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The Tilburg Fontys tournament runs 23rd October - 4th November, Anand, Kramnik, Adams, Svidler, Topalov, Leko, Sadler, Zvjaginsev, Van Wely, Korchnoi, Lautier, Piket. There is daily coverage on the twic pages. After nine round Viswanathan Anand leads with 6.5 points from Peter Leko on 5.5 points. Anand made good use of the white pieces in the second week beating Korchnoi and Adams. With black he's contented himself with reasonably short draws. Leko moved into contention beating Kramnik in round 6 (with a very creative use of the black pieces) and Veselin Topalov in round 8 who lost three games in succession in rounds 7-9). In joint third place are Sadler and Zvjaginsev (both undefeated but with just one win each), Piket and Adams (who has won three and lost two). Kramnik and Svidler have both disappointed and are on 50% with two wins and two losses each. The tournament hasn't quite caught fire just yet but hopefully there will be some good chess in the final two rounds.

The 1998 U.S. Interplay Championship (prize fund $100,000) started in Denver, Colorado Saturday, October 31st. It runs until Wednesday, November 18th. All the top US players are taking part. The Men's event consists of two 8 player all play all events which will produce two qualifiers each for a later knockout phase. The first part is a relatively short duration all-play-all event so Seirawan's second round loss could make life quite hard for him. The event should provide some exciting fighting chess. There will be full daily coverage on the main twic pages.

Anatoly Karpov took the 100,000 Francs first prize after a fourth five minute blitz game against Boris Gelfand. Gelfand took the second prize of 50,000 Francs in spite of having a winning position on the board against Karpov in the final game. Karpov had one second left when Gelfand ran out of time. Most of the games were played at the time rate of 25 minutes per side and 10 seconds per move (except for playoff games in the Karpov-Adianto match and theKarpov-Gelfand match which were played at 5 minutes per side with no increment). The event ran October 25th - November 1st and started with two groups of eight players competing in a round robin. This part saw the surprise elimination of Judit Polgar. In another exhibition event Virtual Chess 2 beat Etienne Bacrot 1.5-0.5

The University of Trier CC organized an IM-tournament (category IV). in Trier from Oct. 19 - 27 reports Stefan Muellenbruck. The event was very competitive with a high percentage of exciting and decisive games. Some of the highest rated players had a tough time e.g. IM T. Horvath (2430) who finished with 50 percent and IM S. Koutsin (2415) who finished still worse. The winner of the tournament was M. Bakalarz (2290), who works as a chess trainer at the Trier club. His result of 6/9 was good enough for an IM norm.
