1) Introduction

My thanks to Anjo Anjewierden, Patrick Rasenberg, John Henderson, Laszlo Nagy, Eric Schiller, Susan Polgar, Stewart Reuben, Europe Echecs, Luis Santos, Roberto Alvarez, Gerhard Hund and all those who helped with this issue.

A return back to normal chess with the VAM tournament which started on Sunday and the Tilburg event later in the week. The Olympiad games contain not a few errors which I may try to correct over the coming weeks. The exact date of the FIDE World Championships in Las Vegas is not known after the cancellation of a press conference this week. There may be things going on behind the scenes which we don't know about yet.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) VAM Tournament

The VAM Chess Tournament is underway in Hoogeveen, Netherlands. There are a number of events including opens and amateur event but the invitational event sees Judit Polgar, Boris Spassky, Tal Shaked and Jan Timman play. After two wins with black, Judit Polgar who hasn't played for some time has already taken control of the event. My thanks to Anjo Anjewierden (one of the greatest influences on TWIC) and Patrick Rasenberg for news of the event. Internet coverage at:

3) Kasparov Interview

Gary Kasparov interview thanks to John Henderson.

Preamble by John Henderson of the Scotsman

IN THE aftermath of the 33rd Chess Olympiad, speculation is mounting that leading council members of FIDE are thought to have been seriously discussing an approach made by the Chairman of EuroTel (the Czech Republic Telecom Company), Bessel Kok, that would finance a $3 million match between Garry Kasparov and the winner of the FIDE World Championship in Las Vegas.

The offer from Mr Kok, a highly respected businessman and world chess personality, includes the provision of a body of the famous from the world of both commerce and entertainment - independent of both FIDE and Kasparov - who will govern the match, with Kasparov and FIDE also being allotted one member each.

The proposal involves the match being played in the second-half of 1999, between Garry Kasparov as the reigning world champion and the winner of FIDE's Las Vegas world championship as the challenger.

It's believed that the Kok group would also be providing all of the organisational expenses for this high-profile match plus the $3million prize-money, to be divided $2million to the winner, $1million to the loser. Mr. Kok also indicated that he would not be using the proposed match as a vehicle for any personal aspirations in the chess world.

Although no mention has been made of reunification, the match, if it should come about, would create a scenario that the media and chess fans worldwide have been longing and dreaming for. Contacted in Moscow with regard to the proposals, Garry Kasparov today indicated that he was taking the offer seriously, commenting: "It was vintage Bessel Kok. In the past Bessel has always been creative and full of surprises in the chess world. I will be reviewing his offer very carefully and we will be responding to him in due course."

Coincidentally, it's also no secret that the FIDE President, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, and his board have also been trying to facilitate a similar match with Kasparov for some years now to no avail.

Q&A with Garry Kasparov.

1. Q What are your views on the offer to you and FIDE made by Bessel Kok?

A It is vintage Bessel Kok. He was always creative and full of surprises. I will review it very carefully and respond to him in due course.

2. Q Are you taking it seriously?

A Of course.

3. Q Did Bessel Kok speak to you about this in Prague when you were there in early September?

A Yes. He spoke to me, my agent and also to many other people at the event in Prague. I think that he was "floating" the idea to see how other people reacted, especially those present who might not be categorized as pro-Kasparov.

4. Q What did you say to Bessel Kok when he broached the idea?

A I told him that my first priority was the match with Alexei Shirov, which was due for decision on the Tuesday after Prague ended. Tuesday, September 15th, I believe. He told me that he had already had a call from FIDE wanting to talk and I told him that it all sounded very interesting and that we would need something in writing to study.

5. Q Will you play if FIDE agrees?

A Experience dictates that there is no simple yes or no answer to this question. I believe that the proposal has great merit and I will study all aspects of it as they unfold. I take the defense of my world crown very seriously and would like to play an appropriate challenger as soon as possible. It is no secret that it is three years since my last title defense against Vishy Anand in New York. Everybody knows that we talked for months to Karpov about a defense in 1997 without ever getting him to agree. We talked to Kramnik, Anand and Shirov in 1998 and we all deeply regret that the final match did not go ahead as planned in Andalusia. I am, as always, ready, willing and able to defend my crown against a worthy opponent and I have been ready and eager to play for over a year. If the Bessel Kok-FIDE alternative goes forward positively and depending on who wins in Las Vegas, this could be very good for the challenger, for FIDE, for me and for the game of chess.

6. Q Do you think FIDE will agree?

A I think that this has more to do with Kirsan Ilyumzhinov than with FIDE. If he continues to pour millions of dollars into the World Championship this year and plans to do so for many years to come, then it is my considered opinion that he will say, "no." If he does not intend spending three million per year for years to come, then this is an ideal solution for him as well as for FIDE.

7. Q Where and when would the match be played?

A I really have no idea and I think the question is probably premature. As I think about it, I believe that Bessel Kok, a lover of Classical Chess, has said what many people have been saying, namely, that there is too much confusion in Chess. He thought up a way to solve one aspect of the problem and now he is "floating" this idea to the two parties. He is not the sort of man to waste his time on small details until the big picture is sorted out.

8. Q Do you trust Bessel Kok?

A Of course, but I think that this is more about respect. There are very few people in Chess who can carry this off. I respect his abilities and trust him enough to take what he says very seriously.

9. Q You fell out with him during the GMA period. Can you trust him now?

A That was long ago. Hopefully, we are both wiser now than we were then.

10. Q Do you believe that the funding will be found?

A This is not my problem. I have heard from many people that such a match is a very attractive proposition and Bessel has a very good track record in chess, which, added to his esteemed business career, leads me to believe that the funding will be found. If we go ahead, I am sure that both we and FIDE will want to see the business plan and then require safeguards that the prizemoney is placed in an escrow account long before the match.

11. Q What about the Shirov match?

A We had a firm offer from Luis Rentero for Sevilla and Linares and it failed for reasons that need to be addressed by Mr. Rentero. When Mr. Rentero withdrew we were desperately looking for an option to play the World Championship this years. Our saviour came in the form of a firm offer from Los Angeles to play in November 1998. Even though I agreed, Alexei Shirov would not play because the prizemoney was not high enough. We then went back to the drawing board and opened various old negotiations but at this stage Alexei Shirov said that he was confident that an attractive offer from Catalonia might be forthcoming and that we should not deal with others while talking to Barcelona and Tarrasa. "Fair enough," we said and a deadline was set for September 15th, later moved, I believe to September 22nd. The end of September came and went and no match has been proposed nor are any of us aware of one that is likely.

12. Q If Shirov and the Catalonia people came back to you, would you accept?

A I look at all offers seriously. It would depend on "the Terms", the dates and many other things such as when we received such an offer. I did hear that they have another meeting later in October but I do not know any details at all.

13. Q What has happened to Mr. Rentero and the WCC?

A We are all awaiting a communication from Luis Rentero but his silence is deafening.

14. Q Who is the "we" you are referring to above?

A Kramnik, Shirov, William Wirth and myself.

15. Q What is the future of the WCC?

A I do not know at this point if it has a future.

16. Q How did Dr. William Wirth get involved with the WCC?

A He is a man of great stature in the banking, the business and the chess worlds. When the WCC was formed, his was a logical name to suggest. He is not a man who is easily put off or intimidated but I feel sure that he must regret the day he became involved with the WCC.

17. Q You mentioned Karpov in 1997. What transpired?

A In December of 1996, Karpov and I both competed in Las Palmas and our respective agents journeyed there to talk about a Kasparov vs, Karpov match in Las Palmas or elsewhere around the world during 1997. During the Six Man Super Tournament, we talked to the local Chess Federation and the local government about a match. Karpov's agent wanted a $5m prize money pool. We though that US$3m was more realistic. Regrettably, Anatoly came 6th out of 6 and the local organizers lost all interest in the match and would not even make us an offer. We then expended a great deal of time and effort in the first six months of 1997 trying to find a home for this match, but unfortunately, Anatoly was not doing very well at the chess board and funding for this match proved very difficult indeed.

Finally in July of 1997, we found a site interested in the match but Anatoly then said the he was not available for an October start, even though he had agreed three weeks before in writing to hold the dates open until August 6th. Soon thereafter he made his "sweetheart deal" with FIDE and we understood why he would not play me.

18. Q What is your relationship with Luis Rentero?

A As I have said frequently since we discovered that Linares/Sevilla was off, Luis Rentero gets an A-plus in my book for effort. He appeared to have succeeded but then, when things fell apart, he made a very human but nonetheless regrettable and harmful decision not to tell any of us what was going on. We had heard at the end of the Kramnik-Shirov match in early June that something was not right. Luis Rentero kept us quiet by giving unequivocal guarantees that the match would go on as planned. The cancellation caused all of us involved a great deal of damage. Like Bill Clinton, he made a big mistake; unlike Bill Clinton, we are yet to receive an apology!

From my personal point of view, the damage is immeasurable, because from June until the present I have spent my time in training and preparing for the World Championship match against Shirov. I did not confirm a number of events I planned to play and only played Jan Timman in Prague as part of my preparation. The cancellation of the World Championship has left me without tournaments to play. Tilburg and Wik aan Zee were both full and my expenses and lost earnings were considerable. I know that Shirov's expenses and losses are also considerable.

But let us be fair to Luis Rentero. He has been a major force in Classical Chess. He has put on great events in the past and I hope will continue to do so in the future. We all hope that he can summon the strength of character to deal openly and honestly with the outstanding contractual matters with the three players concerned.

19. Q What do you do now?

A Life goes on. We are looking at Bessel's proposal and tournaments and matches worldwide. 1999 will be a very busy year for me with hopefully a title defense!

20. Q Have you been invited to Las Vegas?

A No and I won't play for the same reasons that I refused Groningen and Lausanne in 1997/1998.

21. Q Would Shirov have a right to be angry with you if his challenge does not materialize?

A He has a right to be angry but not with me. As I just explained, he and I are both victims with equally big losses and my losses might be a lot higher than his!

When Linares/Sevilla was cancelled, he had a firm offer to play me in Los Angeles this November. The loser would have received $350,000 and, in his case, he had the chance to earn more with a draw or a win. Don't forget that he also had a chance to take the World Title. Then he had the courage to go after a bigger payday but that failed and now we are both left without a match.

22. Q Is there a deadline for answering Bessel Kok?

A No. We will take it day by day.

5) Olympiad and World Championship News

Women's World Championships

The Women's World Champion Susan Polgar plans and expects to defend her title. She has yet to receive official notification from FIDE about who her challenger is and also discuss with them the location, dates and sponsorship. Indeed she is even working actively on finding an appropriate sponsor for the match for a prize fund that will win respect for women's chess.

European Team Championships

Stewart Reuben has news of the reasons for cancelling the European Team Championships in Torquay. He says:

"When the federations became acquainted with the expected cost for their players, they feared it would be too expensive. This had nothing to do with the cost of travelling to Torquay which is likely to be cheaper than Armenia or Elista. The main difficulty was the charge they would have to meet for running the event. This combined with the cost of the hotels and the evening meal was too much for them, possibly by about £30 a person per night. The sum they were quoted was no different from that postulated in 1997 in Moldova in September when the event was unanimously accepted by the European Federations. It is likely they gave it no thought in 1997. As with the World Championship, people in FIDE seem unable to see even one move ahead. That is most disappointing for chessplayers. Another factor was of course the fall-out in the World economy, especially the ex-Soviet States. The major Western economies also expressed considerable concern about the cost. The BCF of course wasted a considerable amount of time and a little money on the project. The European Federations agreed we should be entitled to two teams in the next European Team Championships as some measure of compensation."

Kouatly's call at the FIDE Congress

Kouatly's call from the stage of the FIDE Congress in Elista, 9th October, 5 pm local time where he was acting as theFIDE delegate of Monaco.

Thank you for giving me the floor. First of all let me thank the Kalmyk people for this Olympiad and specially for their warm hospitality that we have all experienced over the past days. But behind the idyllic vision of F.I.D.E and Kalmikya that we have had since this Olympiad started, there is a reality that is less positive for F.I.D.E. To realize this one just needs to read newspapers worldwide such as The Christian Science Monitor. The Economist or Le Monde . These serious source of information have revealed to the world over the past months that our F.I.D.E President Kirsan Iliumzhinov is under suspicion. These are serious allegations, some of which even relate to the murder of a journalist right here in Chess City, Larissa Yudina as she was investigating on funds regarding this Olympiad. It has been front page news in Russia, and around the world, bringing a lot of damage to chess, to F.I.D.E and to each and everyone of as, as members of the chess family. I am sure that many like me have left incomfortable being asked time and time again to justify ourselves as F.I.D.E delegate for this suspicion that lies over an organisation. As we are about to elect our President, let us reflect on this. let as look ourselves in the mirror. Let as not stay silent as F.I.D.E is in danger of loosing all credibility and recognition at a time its President the man who stands for it is closely linked to many legal actions including even a murder case? Great damage is being done to chess. I ask of you to stand for chess our organisation and its reputation. I for one will therefore not give my support to Kirsan Iliumzhinov. Mr President I ask please that this assembly rise and at least expresses some dignity by standing for a minute of silence in respect and memory to Mrs Larissa Yudina. I believe this much we owe to her Thank you.
