My thanks to Sinisa Joksic, Ian Rogers, Laszlo Nagy, Shahcom Company and all those who helped with this issue.
The Olympiad finally got underway on Tuesday in the announced venue, the Chess Palace, after a huge act of will by the organisers. The US are the early front runners, they are an experienced squad and certainly look capable of taking the title from the favourites Russia I. The main issue of the week has been the lack of Olympiad games. Firstly there were virtually none available at all except by contacting the teams, and then only by payment to FIDE. Shahcom appear to have been allowed to broadcast around 100 games a day. If this continues then I find this acceptable for following the Olympiad. In 1994 for instance I got all the games ChessAssistant were generating but promised just to use a selection. This allowed fair reward for fair work whilst allowing the general public to follow the Olympiad. This is more to do with equity than copyright. The Olympiad is a huge event, quite different in nature from most chess events. Production of gamescores for them is a relatively trivial task (here I'm especially thinking of matches and the top all-play-alls which make up the staple diet of top chess) and in no way could a limitation or prohibition on the publication of the games be tolerated. The law has clearly been on the side of publication for a century or more now and I see no new factors to change this. This issue has a number of games collected from journalistic sources from the Olympiad, I hope there will be a larger selection next week.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The opening ceremony for the 33rd Chess Olympiad took place on Saturday 26th of September in the capital of the Russian Republic of Kalmykia. It was opened by FIDE and Kalmykian President Kirsan Iljumzhinov. The play itself got underway three days later on Tuesday 29th October in the Chess Palace, the originally intended venue. After six rounds of the 13 round event the USA leads, their score was boosted most of all by an almost freakish (but deserved) 4-0 drubbing of the Netherlands in round 5 (these scores almost never happen between major chess playing nations).
The initial reports from the playing site was that it could not possibly ready for Tuesday. The organisers too must have believed that at one point because they initially had some alternative arrangements for the first round. Once they committed to playing in the Chess Palace they did everything to make it happen. This included local members of the community also helping out. As revealed this week in the news, two families from Kalmykia have been granted political assylum by the US. If human rights are on the agenda on the ground at the Olympiad the local people have reported to be friendly and helpful.
Neither the Chess City or the Chess Palace are anywhere near complete but there is enough there now to complete the Olympiad. The living accomodation has varied from the very good to the pretty average. There have been mixed reports about the Sanatorium where the officials are staying. Whilst Carol Jarecki (see her report at http://www.uschess.org/clife/issue78/buzz.html on the US chess pages) seemed to have been reasonably happy with it, British Arbiter Harry Lamb returned home immediately calling the conditions disgusting. A big question in my mind is what happened to the former occupants of this building?
Playing conditions gradually improved throughout the week. The top boards were moved from a catwalk to a room (which was crowded and stuffy) and then the room was guarded which meant the conditions became good on those boards. In the general area there was a general problem with noise, especially around the time controls. The heating in the building is not functioning properly or at all which had an impact in some of the rounds where players preferred to finish quickly rather than stay in the cold.
The Olympiad was widely touted as the first Electronic Olympiad by FIDE. TASC had been brought in to do the electronic boards for the event. Of course the chaos surrounding the readying of the venue for play did not allow this to happen in the first round and there were virtually no games available from the Olympiad apart from those in singles from journalist's reports, usually sourced from the teams themselves. However there was an announcement on the FIDE site that they would be charging for access to the games, and further publication on the internet was "prohibited". This word actually begs many more questions than it answers but perhaps the clue is that in signing up for the games you agree they are for personal use. At least temporarily they seem to be relying on a kind of contractual agreement not to distribute the games. I have assembled a number of games from the event without access to these files and there is now daily Russian coverage of the top boards at: http://www.ruschess.com/ so its going to be possible to follow the key games whilst if you need all the games daily then you'll have to go to FIDE (at least during the Olympiad. The Olympiad is an unusual event with 324 games per day. It may be that it could be said that good quality data presented daily is worth what they are charging. The game data from the last Olympiad in Armenia was in terrible condition and I spent many hours a day making it usable, perhaps I should have charged for that! I would not be so sanguine if there was a prohibition (I guess not enforcable) applied to the much smaller numbers of games that would be involved in most of the rounds of a World Championships for instance. If there are going to be from now on a reasonable number of important Olympiad games available for use every day then I'm pretty happy with that, at least during the Olympiad. Whether FIDE (who should be serving the chess community as they are supposed to be elected by the chess community) should be standing the cost of such an event is another question. Any attempt during the FIDE Congress to go ahead with trying to establish copyright on games themselves (which would in fact be a decision to take legal action to overturn previous legal precidents) I would view far more seriously.
According to Carol Jarecki, Anatoly Karpov is present (but not playing) at the Olympiad. Elsewhere it is reported that he is threatening legal action over the changing of the FIDE World Championships from a two year to a one year event (presumably he has in mind the loss of status and money he will incur due to the fact he hasn't a chance of winning this time). Also he is not happy at the fact that he will start at round two with all the other seeds in Las Vegas at the end of the year. Kirsan Iljumzhinov asked players about this question of Karpov starting at round 2 with everyone else, and they left him in no doubt that they thought this right. Nevertheless Karpov is a smart operator and is no doubt there for the General Assembly to get them to see at least some of his points.

The first round of the Olympiad generally see's mismatches and the favourites get off to good starts. In the Men's Olympiad England's 2.5 - 1.5 result was not really good enough, as was the Netherland's 2-2 draw against Scotland. In the women's Olympiad lowly rated Latvia were paired with China in the first round losing 2-1. Latvia were amongst the leading countries after the sixth round.

China drew with the Ukraine 2-2 to show they would be a competitive team in this Olympiad and India also held a strongish Russia 2 team. The Netherlands lost 2.5-1.5 to Bangladesh. Argentina and the USA shared the lead on 7.5 points at this early stage. Yugoslavia lead the women's Olympiad.
