My thanks Eric Schiller, Sinisa Joksic, Malcolm Pein, Vadim Kaminsky, Lost Boys, Milan Dezelin, Juergen Daniel, Alfonso Romero Holmes, ChessAssistant, Frank Zimmerman, Barth Plomp, Teleschach, Hellas Chess Club, Kenneth Horne, Laslo Nagy and all those who helped with this issue.
The British Chess Championships are just coming to the boil with Matthew Sadler taking a narrow lead into the final few rounds. The Russian Championships are still in the first half but they promise to be a fascinating struggle. Summer time in Europe means lots of chess and that is represented here.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The Smith and Williamson British Chess Championships got underway at the Riviera Centre in Torquay on Monday 27th. The event runs until August 8th.
After seven rounds Matthew Sadler took the sole lead on 6/7. Rounds five and six saw draws on the top four boards. In round 7 there were three decisive games. Sadler beat Miles after the latter blundered a piece. Speelman beat Gormally and Rowson beat Summerscale to join Short in second place. One of the key clashes took place in round five where Sadler just managed to hold on to draw against Nigel Short.

Festival Internacional de León 1998. 15.7.-24.7.98 9 round Swiss. Juergen Daniel reports.
León based Grandmaster Alfonso Romero Holmes was the organiser of the second edition of this open tournament in northern Spain. He succeeded in having a good mix of local players, professionals and (ambitious) chess_ tourists. For spanish Grandmasters the tournament had a special importance. It was the last chance to get a ticket for the spanish olympiad squad. Bellon and Garcia Illundain both had chances to join the team. But it was Felix Izeta, who won the tournament with an impressive score of 8/9, which will be hard to beat in the next years.
Pre-tournament favourites Korneev and Strikovic finished 2nd and 3rd. The revelation of the tournament was the untitled dutch player R.Dickhoff, who was only a half point short of his first IM-norm. The event, which apart from Alfonso Romero was organised by Tomas Galard and sponsored by La Caixa and several other companies will see its third edition in 1999.
A full tournament report (in spanish language) you can find on the official homepage:

Frank Zimmerman reports: Weilburg is a small town in Hessen, 60km northwest from Frankfurt. After 5 rounds world champion Janis Klovans was the only player, who had won all his games. In round 6 he faced IM Chernikov. After a blunder in the endgame he had a lost position, but his opponent was in time trouble and missed the win and the game was a draw. Before the last round 3 players shared the lead: Klovans, Suetin and Chernikov. Only Klovans won his game and so also the tournament. There were 257 players and the event ended on July 28th.

The two best Dutch players will qualify for the 1999 Dutch Championship in Rotterdam. Ruud Janssen, Friso Nijboer and Dimitri Reinderman were all tied on 6.5/9. Its not clear to me how the tie-break is to be resolved for the second place. My thanks to Barth Plomp.

ALEXANDE BARRASSO wins United States Blind Open Chess Tournament reports Kenneth Horne.
The United States Open Blind Chess Tournament was held in Primm, Nevada, which is 40 miles South of Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a four round swiss held on 24 and 25 July 98. The time control was 40 in two hours and then sudden death in one hour. We had eleven blind chess players playing for the Championship.
Alex Barrasso of Washington DC is this yearÆs US Blind Champion. He is a second year graduate student majoring in International Studies, at John Hopkins University. He currently has a summer job with the US State Department.
Tim Just was Chief TD and Ken Horne was Assistant TD. Acting as seconds were Tom Thrush, Sister Virginia Corley, Sister Bernice, John Trivitt, Mike Bruns, Eric Baugus, and Bob Byrd of Davis, CA.
Blind players do not play blind folded but use a Braille chess board. On a Braille chess board the white squares are about an eighth of an inch lower in order for the players to tell the difference. The pieces are like ordinary pieces except they are pegged to go into the holes in the squares. This keeps the pieces in place. The black pieces have small pins on the top so they can be differentiated from the white pieces.
The process for moving is: a player will make a move on the board, called out the move to his opponent, punch his clock, his opponent repeats the move, and he makes the move on his board. The blind players have Braille clocks. They are like ordinary chess clocks except there is no glass over the clock and there are bumps on the face so the blind player can feel the time.
The blind players are required to keep score, some use Braille writing, some use a Braille machine, and some use a hand held tape recorder.
The US Junior Championships were held in New York, 11-19th July. The event was won by Igor Shliperman after a two game tie break match with Michael Mulyar (Shliperman won the first game with black, the second was drawn) after they both tied on 6.5/9. My thanks to Vadim Kaminsky for the games.
