My thanks Scott Pendergrast, James Eade, Tomas Micanek, Ian Rogers, Robin Mackley, Laszlo Nagy, John Saunders, John Henderson, Hans Groffen, Jan Ooteman and all those who helped with this issue.
Not much action at the very top level of chess but a large amount of chess elsewhere. A pretty weighty edition of TWIC.
Hope you enjoy this issue

James Eade reports on the category 10 3rd Mechanics Institute GM invitational in San Francisco. Julian Hodgson has set the pace in the first three rounds. Christiansen and Atalik are close behind with 2.5/3. Although US Champion Benjamin only has 1/3 he has been paired against Christiansen, Atalik and Fedorowicz so far. He can be expected to make hay in the later rounds.
IM Guillermo Rey scored the first upset of the tournament with his win over Dmitry Gurevich. Gurevich had trouble getting a cab (right after France's world cup win) arrived late, out of breath and a bit agitated. It was clear right from the start that he had trouble regaining his composure.

The Norwegian chess championships took place in Oslo 4-11th July 1998. There was a surprise victory for 23 year old IM Roy Harald Fyllingen who scored 7.5/9 ahead of GMs Simen Agdestein (7) and Rune Djurhuus (6.5). Roy Fyllingen's rating result was actually good enough for a GM-norm, but he didn't meet all three GM's in the event. The third, Einar Gausel, ended 13th, and didn't get in a position to play the winner.

The Scottish Championships took place July 5-12th in Largs. 29 year old John Shaw won the 105th Scottish Championships and also scored his 3rd and final IM norm. His victory came about after starting with 1/3 and he managed to overhaul Jonathan Rowson who all but had the event sewn up before losing two of his last three games. My thanks to John Henderson for the games.

Jan Ooteman reports:
The Chessclub HWP Haarlem, Holland, organised a weekend-tournament. The six-round-tournament took place on 3, 4 and 5 July. The organisers consider it the best weekend-tournament of Holland and with 8 grandmaster, 8 international masters and 8 FIDE-masters and it probabily is. It was the seventh edition of the akn-tournament (akn has promised to sponsor the tournament for at least ten years!). Since the tournament started at the last day of the dutch championships in Rotterdam, no dutch grandmasters were present. First prize winner, with the perfect score of 6/6, was dutchman IM Erik van den Doel (3000 Dutch Guilders). After his great success in London, he seemed confident enough to go for 100% this weekend. The usual score for the first place in a six-round-swiss is 5½/6 but this time IM Alexey Barsov had to settle for the unshared second place ( 1500,-). GM Normundis Miezis pushed too hard in the last round and lost an equal position against Barsov. Last years winner GM Mikhail Gurevich lost to Van den Doel and had to share the third prize.
