My thanks Bob Wade, Mart Tarmak, TASC, Gary Bekker, World Open www site, Konstantin Kodinets of Chess Assistant, Dmitri Borissenkov, Shahcom, Laszlo Nagy, John Henderson and all those who helped with this issue.
Another week of interesting chess. From the British point of view the victory of Short in Estonia and Adams 1st= in Dortmund bodes well for the Olympiad later in the year. Anand's relative failure in Dortmund is probably a blip after a year of success. Shirov's dismall showing is a little more worrying, although his thoughts will already be on the Kasparov match and perhaps shouldn't be taken that seriously. Such indifferent or poor showings prior to a match are in fact quite common.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting '98 finished on July 5th with a three way tie for first between Vladimir Kramnik, Michael Adams and Peter Svidler. Kramnik took the title on a tie-break. In a low key event with many draws Kramnik and Adams won three without loss. Svidler caught them in the final round with a win in a Marshall against Leko. The event was a disappointment for Anand (for whom it may be the first tournament he has failed to win since this event last year) he did not win a game and lost one to Michael Adams. Even more so for Alexei Shirov, his mind may be on playing Kasparov later in the year but his four losses and no wins was a dreadful result. He had several promising positions but wrecked them with some terrible blunders.

Tallinn and Parnu are the venues for the 1998 Keres Memorial reports Mart Tarmak. Nigel Short scored a convincing victory in the A event scoring 7/9 and finishing two points clear of Adianto and Khalifman. This was a fine result which could have been even better as he probably missed chances to win at least two more games.
After the event he talked about his final round game against Andersson to Malcolm Pein in London. Short played 1.d4 as a surprise against Andersson, but the Swede did not play his normal 2. ...e6 but instead played 2. ...c6. Short, playing confidently (as you have to do even when things aren't going to plan) continued by offering a real fight with the Botvinnik Defence. This was declined and Ulf chose 6. ...Qa5, Short again chose the critical continuation with 7.cxd5 and after Ulf again didn't play the critical continuation Short found himself three tempi up in a Queens Gambit with a near winning position.
My thanks to Mart Tarmak for the games from the event.

The Broekhuis Dutch Championships are taking place in Rotterdam in the Netherlands 20 June-3rd July 1998. The new sponsors mean that the Championships have all the top Dutch players. The last two years have seen a tie for first place. This year Ivan Sokolov won the event alone with 9/11 drawing against his four closest rivals and then beating all the other players in the field. His agressive style won him the tournament by a clear point from Jan Timman.

Gold Coast Open 20-21 June 1998. Report by Gary Bekker
This year's Gold Coast Open attracted almost 100 entrants, including several FIDE titled players. Amongst these were the New Zealand FM John Sarfati and the Czech Husband and wife team, Brestislav Modr and WFM Hanna Modrova. The tournament got off to late start, due to a number of late entries, but an enjoyable time was had by all.
Solomon was a little lucky to win his round one game when Phachara Wongwichit misplayed a potentially drawn ending. This didn't bode well for Solomon's chances in this tournament, nor for his forthcoming Australian Championship title play-off match against Rogers.
In round three, Tony Weller and Paul Richards muscled their way towards the top of the field with upset wins over Casey and Lovejoy respectively. There was also considerable interest from spectators in Keven Duncan's upset "win" over Rogers until it was discovered that Keven had written the result incorrectly on his scoresheet.
In the fourth round Paul Richards continued his winning way, defeating Alex Davidovici of Sydney, to end up joint leader with Rogers, Solomon, Wohl, Modr, and Sarfati at the end of the first day of play.
In round five, Rogers drew with Modr, allowing Solomon and Wohl to take a half point lead by defeating FM Sarfati (NZL) and Paul Richards respectively.
The critical game in the following round, between Alex Wohl and Stephen Solomon, resulted in a win for Wohl using the black pieces. Wohl introduced something of a novelty in the Portugese Variation with 6...c5!? giving Black some interesting play. Shortly afterwards, Solomon played 9.g4?! and then sacrificed his queen for a rook and piece, only to see his position deteriorate. Solomon went on to lose the game, giving Wohl the sole lead, half a point ahead of Rogers and Modr, going into the last round.
Any hopes that Ian Rogers had of catching up to Wohl, to finish equal first, were dashed in their exciting final round clash that went right down to the wire. Wohl defended against a good start by Rogers and in the final position decided to force a draw by perpetual check rather than enter a potentially tricky piece vs two pawns ending. The draw secured Alex Wohl outright first in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Solomon, Stephson and Smerdon won their games against Modr, Myers, and Pardoen respectively to finish equal second with Rogers. Modr finished half a point behind them on 5.5 points. Andrew Allen was the highest place Gold Coast resident, finishing half a point behind Modr, with several others.
Winners of the 'A' group ratings prize were Michael Lip, Paul Summers, Paul Richards and Mark Stokes. Rhys Rakauskas, who finished very high in the final standings, won group 'B' outright. Eric Faccer, Anthony Lam, Chatpong Wongwichit, Michelle Mowles, Terry Munro and Geoff Hartley shared first prizes in the remaining ratings divisions. WFM Hanna Modrova (CZE) won the women's prize and Chris Page and Catherine Lip won the primary school student's prizes.
Many thanks to to Australian Chess Enterprises for supplying DGT clocks, Graeme Gardiner for organising the tournament, and Andrew Allen for his enormous efforts to help me run the tournament. I would also like to the Carey family for their hospitality.
