My thanks Tibor Karoli, Sibylle Heyme, Christophe Bouton of Europe Echecs, Bob Wade, Laszlo Nagy, Paul Hodges, Schacknyheter, John Henderson, Milan Ninchich, Zoltan Blazsik, Net64, El Pais and and all those who helped with this issue.
Whether Kasparov's match against Topalov was a vision of the future or not we will have to see but their match using computers to aid their play did provide some interesting chess. Kasparov's old rival Karpov has had better weeks as he lost to Judit Polgar in an eight game rapidplay match. He also withdrew from the Frankfurt rapidplay tournament (which I will be attending from Wednesday) apparently unhappy at Kasparov's invitation to the event.
Hope you enjoy this issue

Garry Kasparov and Veselin Topalov played a match in Leon, Spain June 9th-13th. The match was played under special rules which allowed the players to use a chess database and an analysis program. This special form of chess "advanced chess" is one that has been an enthusiasm for Kasparov for some time which he regards as the "Chess of the Future". I'm more than a little skeptical of this but the match was an interesting one, and I don't believe this can ever be more than an interesting exhibition concept which probably should be tried again.
The players were given a PC with ChessBase 7.0, Fritz 5 with opening and endgame databases. The time rate of one hour for all the moves meant that the players had to allocate their time effectively. It was not possible to use the computer all the time and the players had to know when its use was most effective. The audience could see the variations the players considered using their computers. However even a brief use of an analysis program cuts out the most crass tactical blunders which can happen to even the best players.
Kasparov appeared to use the computer more than Topalov, which given he was promoting the concept was entirely understandable. In game one he was in time pressure towards the end, probably through overuse of the PC. Indeed in some cases there was insufficient time for the analysis program to find useful lines. On day two after waiting several minutes for the program to analyse a line Kasparov realised that it would never come to terms with the position and played a move based on intuition instead. Kasparov's misuse of the analysis program in game five probably cost him a draw, he started to overuse the analysis late in the game when he would have been better just playing the position himself.
Topalov won games one and five, Kasparov games two and four. The final game of the normal time-rate match was drawn by repetition in a position that was favorable to Topalov. He admitted he should have played on after the game.
After the match was tied at 3-3 there were a series of playoff games. They played a pair of five minute games which both won as black. Then they went into a sudden death situation with white having four minutes and black five, with the match ending at the first decisive game. The first game was drawn and the second was won by Kasparov to end the match.
The players both had identical PCs, ChessBase 7.0, Fritz 5 and access to opening and endgame databases.

Judit Polgar became the first female player to defeat a reigning World Chess Champion when she beat Anatoly Karpov in an 8 game match of rapidplay (30 minutes per side) games in Budapest, Hungary. The event ran June 9-12th. Afterwards she thought that the achievement might be remembered rather more than the games themselves. Karpov struggled throughout the match with the clock, in game three he had around 15 minutes left after move 25 and a winning position but simply played far too slowly, eventually even losing on time. Although they were playing with mechanical clocks so exact timings are not available Karpov had around 20 seconds towards the end of game 5 with a Queen and Bishop vs lone King. He stalemated Polgar with around 7 seconds left on his clock. No-one, not even Judit Polgar knew whether the last game of the match would be played, after a delay of an hour the game was played and Polgar had the opportunity to extend the winning margin but Karpov managed to hold on for a draw. The match attracted huge publicity in Hungary. My thanks to Tibor Karoli for some of the details on the match. Karpov and Polgar are due to play a similar match in Greece in the next few weeks.

The 1998 Frankfurt Chess Classic will take place June 17-21 1998 at the Stadthalle Frankfurt-Zeilsheim. The main event runs Wednesday 17th - Friday 21st when the "Giants" event takes place. Kasparov, Anand and Kramnik play, along with one other after the last minute withdrawal from the event by Anatoly Karpov. Karpov didn't seem to believe that the organisers could get Kasparov and has been a doubtful starter since his participation was confirmed. The organisers are left trying to get a lasts minute replacement of the required strength. Timman, Korchnoi, Jussupow, Portisch, Huebner, Beim and Adorjan are amongst the players in the Master's group. All games will be played at rapid (active) chess time limits. I will be at the event from Wednesday and I'm very much looking forward to it. There will be news from the event on the twic pages. "Schach" Magazine is sponsoring a 6 game match between French star Etienne Bacrot and the experienced German player Robert Huebner reports Sibylle Heyme. The first three games are took place in Albert, France June 6th -8th. and the second leg in Berlin, Germany June 12th -14th. There was only one decisive game in the match when Bacrot won game five. The play was a little dry and dull but this was a good workout for the Frenchman.

The latest 3rd Thursday (May 21st-29th) tournament finished in Szeged, Hungary reports Zoltan Blazsik. IMs Dan Bogdan and Viktor Ianov shared first place. The table below is a correction from last week. The all-play-all event switched rounds 7 and 9 and this seemed to confuse a couple of the players. Vladimir Revuckij had six whites after he played the wrong colours in his round 9 game against Vlagyimir Rizsonkov (I switched the players around assuming that they didn't actually play with the wrong colours).
