My thanks to Shahcom, Laszlo Nagy, Net64, Adrian Rolden and Ruben Casafus, Luis Blasco de la Cruz, El Pais Francisco Acosta, Shay Bushinsky, Vojin Vujosevic, and all those who helped with this issue.
Things are definitely picking up, Madrid, in spite of a couple of quietish rounds still is providing some great chess, Timman-Van Wely game 6 was a fantastic game also. With Shirov-Kramnik waiting in the wings and the year almost certainly now being rounded off with the FIDE World Championships in Las Vegas you couldn't ask for more.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The Category 17 Madrid tournament with Anand, Svidler, Adams, Beliavsky, Leko, Krasenkow, Yermolinsky, Granda, Illescas, San Segundo started Monday 11th May 1998 and runs until May 22nd.

Viswanathan Anand got off to the best possible start by beating Michael Adams. The game was a fascinating struggle. They followed a previous game from their clash in the FIDE World Championship semi-finals. Anand tried to improve on move 11 which was followed by a pawn sacrifice on b5 by Adams on move 14 and a further temporary pawn sacrifice on move 22. Adams had to justify his sacrifice and although he had sufficient compensation he could not find a way (possibly through 29. ...e5) to make it count and his position eventually collapsed. Mikhail Krasenkow vs Peter Svidler was another interesting struggle. In the 4. Bg5 Gruenfeld, Svidler avoided the old main line of 4....Ne4 and play became very intricate. At one stage Krasenkow thought he was close to winning on the King's side (perhaps with 22. Rf4 instead) and the game finished in perpetual check a few moves later. Julio Granda Zuniga is often a slow starter, he managed to draw with Peter Leko but did have only 3 minutes left at move 24. Alexander Beliavsky was caught in the opening by Alex Yermolinsky and his King was left in the middle of the board. He never got fully developed and had to resign on move 39. San Segundo managed to draw a lost position in 48 moves against Miguel Illescas.
Viswanathan Anand was the only player on 100% after round 2. He was somewhat fortunate to win his second round game against Mikhail Krasenkow however, it being settled when the Polish player had to make three moves in a minute in a complicated position. Anand had obtained a nice advantage but couldn't follow it through correctly. After the game it was suggested that 20. Kf1 was wrong. Anand sacrificed a piece for a pawn with several more to follow and achieved a winning position at first time control. Yermolinsky over-reached himself against San Segundo and the final position was aesthetically pleasing as he couldn't guard against 29. ...Qb7 in any way. Granda Zuniga lost with white against Alexander Beliavsky in a Nimzo-Indian of great complexity. Granda's castling by hand and leaky Kingside left him with a ropey position and eventually Beliavsky took advantage. Svidler-Leko was a 64 move draw in a Caro-Kann. Michael Adams drew against Miguel Illescas in a 3. g3 Sicilian in 60 moves. The rook and 3 pawns against knight and 4 pawns ending was complicated.
The audience were somewhat disappointed in the draw in only 21 moves between Anand and Leko. The Caro-Kann defence became extremely sharp but nerves and an unclear position led Leko to take a draw. San Segundo and Granda Zuniga also agreed a draw, in 20 moves. San Segundo is by far the most lowly rated player in the field and his main priority is to keep his good start going. A draw against Granda suited him fine. The game between Illescas and Yermolinsky was a fluctuating affair which ended in the second consecutive loss by the American. Out of the opening Illescas appeared to have a huge advantage. However he couldn't find the correct way to follow the position up and Yermolinsky probably even had the advantage. However in the end Yermolinsky blundered and was lost just after first time control. Krasenkow-Adams was a closed positional manoevering game which ended in a draw in 51 moves. Beliavsky and Svidler contested a line of the Grunfeld made popular by the Kasparov-Karpov match in Seville in 1987. Svidler defended carefully against Beliavsky's kingside demonstration and made his queenside pawn majority count.
Anand and Beliavsky drew an intricate game in round 4 of the Madrid tournament. Anand felt that he had come close to winning but Beliavsky found some strong resources. In the end Anand had to allow his opponent two queen's before forcing a draw. An improvement for Anand was 34. Nfg6 when he comes close to winning after 34 Nfg6 Qxd4 35 Nf3 d2 36 Nxd2 Kh7 37 Nxe4 Kxg6 38 Nc3 Bd7 39 Qb1+ Kf6 40 Nxb5 Bxb5 41 Qxb5 Qa1+ 42 Kh2 Qxa3 43 Qc6+ Kg5 44 Qd7 Kf6 45 Qd4+ and after the error 34. Qc1 Beliavsky could have tried for more by 34. ...Qc4 with tremendous complications when he was in time trouble but with good chances to win.
Pablo San Segundo had the position after move 25 on his board at home before he reached it against Peter Svidler. The game was drawn only a few moves later. The game between Granda Zuniga and Illescas was drawn after a strange struggle. After a theoretical Grunfeld variation Krasenkow and Leko reached a very drawish position which they agreed after first time control. Michael Adams seemed to have a nice position from which to press coming from a c3 Sicilian. In the rook and pawn ending he somewhat lost control and had to play carefully to secure the draw himself.
Pablo San Segundo has clearly come well prepared for the Madrid tournament. Rated at only 2505 compared to 2600 for the next lowest rated opponent he was clearly marked out as a person against whom one should try and win. He can afford to take steer for draws which his opponents really don't want. Against Anand he kept a small spacial advantage whilst trading pieces off, a simple style that gained him quite an easy draw. Leko and Adams repeated position just out of theory of a Ruy Lopez Marshall on move 20. Illescas and Svidler agreed a draw on move 18 when there was definitely still play in the game. There probably was still something in the game Yermolinsky-Granda Zuniga although the pawn structure was symetrical when the draw was agreed. Beliavsky held a slight but nice initiative against Krasenkow in an English after some intricate play in the opening. The opposite coloured bishops were however a factor he always had to take into account. The game was eventually drawn.
Anand scored a win in round 6 There were quite a variety of games in the 6th round. Yermolinsky defended against the advanced Caro Kann defence of Svidler who could not make anything of his advantage and a draw was agreed. Granda Zuniga doesn't seem to have got into form at all in the event. He sacrificed a pawn against Michael Adams as black in a Caro Kann and then in time trouble just lost a piece. Anand and Illescas discussed a common line in the exchange Grunfeld. Anand making his d-pawn count against Illescas queenside potential. Anand used only 33 minutes as opposed to nearly 2 hours from Illescas. Beliavsky tried the Pirc defence against Leko and yet again showed that this opening is really a bad idea at this level, as he got a grovelly position which fell apart after 34 moves. Krasenkow won a pawn on the kingside and with some superior piece activity inflicted San Segundo's first defeat of the event. Prior to the round the organisers reminded the players of their implicit committment to produce fighting chess and not agree draws in positions where there were still significant possibilities in the game. This reminder seemed to have an effect as four out of the five games were decisive.

The Russian Chess Championships were due to be in Elista but due to a disagreement with the Russian Chess Federation they have been moved to St Petersberg in July. However Kirsan Iljumzhinov still decided to hold an event with $100,000 of prize money. The final of the President's Cup in Elista will be between Vassily Ivanchuk and Alexander Khalifman. Both needed 2 playoff games against their opponents (Bareev and Dreev respectively) in the semi-finals to get there.

Jan Timman and Loek Van Wely are playing a 10 game match in Breda, Netherlands. The STEIJSIGER TWEEKAMP is a match which sets the current top two Dutch players against each other. The event runs May 6th - 19th.
After 10 games the match was drawn, Timman was twice two games down. The match turned on a fantastic attacking effort from Timman in game 6 where he won in only 21 moves and sliced through Van Wely's whole position with a double exchange sacrifice. On Tuesday 19th they will play four rapid games to decide the match. The venue is Stadskantoor Claudius Prinsenlaan 10 Breda. Steijsiger sponsor of Van Wely and have provided a prizefund of fl.30.000, 20 of which go to the winners.

According to Willy Iclicki on Chess Planet Kirsan Iljumzhinov announced that the FIDE World Championships will go ahead in Las Vegas in December this year.
The XXXIII Capablanca Memorial Tournament got underway in Havana, Cuba on May 7th. It will run until May 22nd. Previous winners of this historic event which started in 1962 have included Najdorf, Korchnoi, Uhlmann, Smyslov, Larsen, Andersson, Gulko, Miles, Van Wely and Leko. The most famous edition was the IV which was won by Smyslov but in which Bobby Fischer competed by telex from New York to end his international tournament exile. There are four tournaments, an Elite, a Premier and two Master events. My thanks to Francisco Acosta for his hard work in getting the games and results out. Robert Hubner, Ivan Morovic and Julio Becerra Rivero are leading with 4.5/7.
