My thanks to Shahcom, Laszlo Nagy, Philipp Schlosser, Zoltan Blazsik, Adam Raoof, John Henderson, Milan Dezelin, and all those who helped with this issue.
Over 1000 games this week and a very international representation. Some good events in the offing too with Madrid in May and the Shirov - Kramnik match. The Olympiad will take place in the chess city in Kalmykia (in spite of some speculation to the contrary) as the invitations have gone out.
Hope you enjoy this issue

After eleven rounds of the St Petersburg Championships Evgeny Solozhenkin and Valerij Popov are joint first on 8/11 Alexander Khalifman still has an outside chance of catching the leaders. He plays tail ender Mark Taimanov in the penultimate round and joint leader Popov in the final round and he really needs a couple of wins to save some rating points. His efforts have been sabotaged by losses with white in the first and eighth round (although I have to confess I don't really understand the conclusion of the eighth round game unless he lost on time or is losing to a breakthrough).

Michael Adams and Jonathan Rowson play a six game challenge match running April 16th-21st in London. Internet coverage at: http://www.cableinet.co.uk/users/jsaunders/nclmajr.htm
Michael Adams secured victory in the match after only four games winning the first three and drawing the fourth.
Rowson has certainly not been without his chances but has blundered in critical positions. In the first game he set up a fine position before wrecking it with 32. Ra6 instead of the much better 32. Bd4. The second game was a convincing Adams win especially after the mistaken 16... d5 from Rowson. A finely played Ruy Lopez from Adams as black took advantage of some dubious early middlegame play (13. Bc4 and 14. Bxa6 looked wrong). Game four saw Rowson stand slightly better with black when he agreed a draw in 26 moves. The fifth game again saw a sharp position turn against Rowson he didn't believe he could play 25. Kg1 which was the best and perhaps forced continuation. Instead he came under a terrible attack and lost.
The final game takes place tomorrow. Rowson has been slightly unlucky in the match but the pressure of playing a far stronger opponent is always a difficult one to overcome.

Anjo Anjewierden sends news and the games from the Dutch Championship Semi-final playoffs. The lineup for the Dutch Championships which take place in Rotterdam in June has been finalised. The Dutch Championships semi-finals in Enschede in January produced a three way tie for two places in the finals. The playoff took place over the Easter weekend to eliminate one of these players. A single round robin event was played. The first to qualify was Sipke Ernst who drew both his games. This left Roberto Cifuentes Parada needing a draw with white against Karel Van der Wiede to qualify. However he overdid the caution and lost in 43 moves to be eliminated. The lineup in June for the final is Timman, Van Wely, Piket, Nijboer, Van der Wiel, Van der Sterren, Sosonko, Reinderman, Nikolic, Sokolov, Ernst and Van der Weide.

The tournament was a very close affair with Loosdorf (Artur Yusupov is part of their team) going through to the A league by only a half point ahead of two teams on 50 percent. Pre-tournament favorites Kufstein (GM Schlosser, GM Hort, GM Martinovic and IM Wach) were placed second only on a team points tiebreak ahead of outsiders Gamlitz. As two teams qualify to join the A league, Loosdorf and Kufstein are the qualifiers for next year's season. However this might not be the final result as there was a moment of controversy over the weekend.
Often in the final round of these events, maths ability is required almost more than chess ability. However calculations were made more complicated by an unresolved controversy in the match between Kufstein and Gamlitz on the first day.
It seemed that the Kufstein team would have to play with only four of their six players when GM Phillip Schlosser and Martin Grundherr could not make it in time for the scheduled start time. They used a mobile phone to explain they were stuck in a traffic jam. Indeed they were still not there with only five minutes to go to automatic forfeiture on time. At this point the Kufstein team and outsiders Gamlitz agreed to draw the match 3:3. They informed the arbiter of their agreement and he said it was within the rules and signed the results card with 6 draws.
Shortly afterwards the captains of Stein/Steyr and Loosdorf pointed out that there is a rule in Austrian chess that team captains can't agree to game results, only the players are allowed to (of course this is theoretical, because a team member won't refuse a draw request of his captain if he wants to be on the squad any longer). The other two captains' position was quite simple that when there is no player present to accept a draw offer, how could the games end in a draw? Stubenvoll (by the way member of the FIDE rules committee) seemed to realise his mistake as after a short discussion he decided to postpone the two missing games until 7 p.m. (official start was at 5 p.m.). If Schlosser and Grundherr were still absent then he would forfeit the games. The rule basis he gave was that the traffic jam qualifyied under the 'act of god' rule (in Austria, less pious, this rule reads 'subjects out of human control') giving him the right to postpone games. The final outcome was that Schlosser and Grundherr arrived at 6.45, played a few moves against their opponents and then agreed to the draws already filled in on the results sheet. The protest (which, when it goes through the usual stages is likely to find Stubenvoll again as member of the Austrian chess appeal court...) could result in a 4:2 victory for Gamlitz (which would mean that Gamlitz and Loosdorf qualify) when the 2 games are forfeited, or to a 2:2 (Steyr and Loosdorf in) in the worst case. So by the end of the event on Sunday it seems that only Loosdorf can be seen as definitely promoted to next year's Austrian Staatslig A division. Stein/Steyr have protested, not against the match result but against Stubenvoll's handling of the situation!

Philipp Schlosser adds to his short report on the 6th. Haering Drei-Fluesse-Open Passau 1998 of last week with fuller standings and some games.
For the last six years, SK Passau 1869 has organised the three Rivers Open - the Inn and the Ilz flow into the Donau in Passau - by the town's University. As McDonalds didn't prolong its sponsorship after three years of successful cooperation the Club's main sponsor filled the gap this year. The Haering company is one of the biggest companies in south-eastern Bavaria and has supported the Club's Bundesliga team for three years now. Though there were only 284 participants instead of 356, last year, the tournament was celebrated as a success as for the very first time the tournment it saw a German winner - GM Peter Enders from Erfurt playing for PSV Duisburg in German Bundesliga.

Sean Press and Milan Ninchich send the results and games from the 36th Doeberl Cup Tournament. The 204 player (a record entry) event held between 10-13 April 1998 in Canberra and was won by two players from Melbourne. Grandmaster Darryl Johansen and International Master Mikhail Gluzman both scored 6/7 with Gluzman losing a drastic game to Johansen. Gluzman won on the countback tiebreak. Gluzman is the first player since 1987 without a GM title to win the event.

Laszlo Nagy reports on his First Saturday April tournaments which started on April 4th ran until April 16th. The events took place in the Hungarian Chess Federation tournament halls. There were two main events, a category VII GM event (Average rating 2412, GM-norm 9.5 points, IM-norm 7.5 points) and a category II IM event. In addition there was a Scheveningen system event whose primary purpose is to allow players the chance to get an ELO rating. GM Alex Sherzer won the GM event with 9/13 a point clear of IM Lubomir Mikhaletz and FM Peter Acs. The real star performance was in the IM event where Imre Hera Jr, an 11.5 year old boy won with 9.5/13 and scored his first IM norm.
