My thanks to Stephane Laborde, Pablo Rodriguez, Sinisa Joksic, Laszlo Nagy, Zoltan Blazsik, Adam Raoof, John Saunders, Artur Zaremba, and 64 - Chess Review and all those who helped with this issue.
The trend is toward a rather lot of chess and many more opportunities for good players to achieve international results but not so many appearances by the very top players. Shirov played a one day event in France this week and that was about it. It is worrying that the number of really top events seems to be reducing alarmingly now. At one stage twic would have at least one top level event to report on every week. Nevertheless there are a number of interesting events this week to keep the chess addict going.
Hope you enjoy this issue

After earlier qualifying events four players competed in the Grand Prix de Bordeaux on April 4th. Laurent Fressinet won a French qualifier. Jon Speelman and Diego Adla qualified from an open. Shirov was invited. The event was 25 minutes per side (the five minute playoff games were not required).
Jon Speelman beat Laurent Fressinet 1.5 - 0.5 and Alexei Shirov beat Diego Alda by the same score. In the final Shirov beat Speelman 2-0.

Pablo Rodriguez sends news of the Chilean Championships.
Argentinian IM Guillermo Llanos's outstanding performance and Luis Valenzuela's victory among the Chileans, were the highlights of the "Copa Cincuentenario Ciudad de Viña del Mar" tournament played on March 14-24 in the "Centro Cultural Palacio La Rioja" of Viña del Mar, a very important seaside resort.
Llanos, a 36-year old IM from Buenos Aires, showed that his winning on the Esucomex (TWIC 176) was not casual and here he won 7 games and conceded 4 draws. Luis Rojas Keim (22) got an extra IM norm and second place and young Luis Valenzuela (20) played very solid losing only one game (against Llanos), drawing with players of higher rating and beating the rest, which gave him third place in the tournament, his last IM-norm and for the first time the title of Chilean Champion.
Only results among Chileans were considered for the Chilean Championships, which together with last year's version was used to select team for the next Olympiad: Jorge Egger, Luis Rojas Keim, Luis Valenzuela and Rodrigo Vasquez. It is hoped that GM Ivan Morovic will also join this strong group.

Sinisa Joksic reports on the conclusion to the 53rd Yugoslav Championship that took place in Belgrade in the hotel "Jugoslavija" from March 14.-30. The event was Category 10. (2495). Norms g=10, m=7. Mirislav Markovic a 25 years old, international master secured both the tournament and a GM norm when he won with 11.5/15. Damljanovic was clear second on 10 a point and a half clear of a group of 6 players including veteran Svetozar Gligoric on 8.5 points.
Miroslav Markovic, the 25 year old international master from Leskovac is the 1998 Yugoslav Champion. He was 1,5 points clear of second, and three points better than the next group of six players. Markovic gained 30,4 rating points. Branko Damljanovic was clear second, playing in his recognisable fighting style, with many long games. Svetozar Gligoric was very impressive in spite of being 76 years old. Velimirovic, Djuric and pre-event favorite Ilincic could do better. Apart from Markovic, of course, there were other surprisingly good performances by Ivanisevic and Knezevic. GMs Popovic and Pavlovic in contrast were a disappointment. Their problems were due to too many blunders in their games. Markovic made his first GM norm, and Knezevic will be new IM after he made his third and final norm in this event.
Markovic is not unknown in Yugoslav chess. He was world Under-16 champion in Puerto Rico 1987. Also Junior YU-champion 1991 and 1992. He has played twice in the World junior championship. In 1992 he lost in the last round to Zarnicki and shared third place. He was the winner of the Yugoslav zonal tournament in 1992, and when the federation made a decision to play another four player tournament, he withdrew. He stayed on his farm near Leskovac, playing only team competitions. In January, when Yugoslav Federation's administration changed, he decide to resume playing individual competitions again. He was not the only player who stopped playing chess in last 8 years during the period of administration of the previous chess leaders. The same directors tried to cover up for organizers and players who "played" non-existant tournaments, in what was the one of the biggist scandals in chess history. The 53rd Yugoslav Champ was the first championship where Yugoslav federation paid all expenses for the players, and provided excellent conditions, like in super tournaments. There were some problems as the organizers were inexperienced and this led to a number of mistakes during the event.

Adam Raoof organised three tournaments as part of the Hampstead Chess Festival which took place 25th-31st March 1998 in London, England. There was a Category VII GM event, a Category IV IM event and a rating event. In the GM event Eirik Gullaksen scored his third an final IM norm and Ron Burnett fell just half a point short of getting a GM norm in the same event. He played the tournament winner Neil McDonald in the final round and at one stage looked well placed to get the win he needed to take the event and his norm. In the end he could not mobilise his queenside pawn duo and had to settle for a draw. The IM event was won by IM Jacob Aagaard with 6.5/9 a point clear of Bernd Rechel who could count himself unlucky not to score an IM norm.
There is full and excellent coverage by John Saunders on these events and upcoming events at:

There will be a Category X 15-22 June. Contact Adam Raoof at Adam@circuit.demon.co.uk if you are interested.
