My thanks to Leontxo Garcia, Sinisa Joksic, Gerhard Hund, Laszlo Nagy, Christophe Bouton of Europe Echecs, Jeroen van den Berg, Eric van der Schilden (and TASC), Daði Örn Jónsson's Chess in Iceland pages, Larry Kaufman, Hassan Khaled, John Fernandez, SS Quah, Michael Atkins and all those who helped with this issue.
The main event of the week is the 7th Amber Blindfold and Rapid tournament. With FIDE using the faster time controls to settle their Championships it could be said to have gone up in importance. Having said that it is more about fun chess with more mistakes (especially in the blindfold games) and perhaps a few more risks as rating points are not at risk.
Just a couple of points about the stop press on the finish of Linares last week. The story originated from Leontxo Garcia's El Pais chess column and wasn't part of the "official" coverage and also Kasparov's new organisation is the WCC not the WWC (it was getting late).
Hope you enjoy this issue

The "Seventh Amber Blindfold and Rapid Chess Tournament" will be held at the Metropole Palace hotel at the casino square in Monaco, from March 12 until March 27 1998.
There is full coverage at:

the games will also be available on twic's pages.
Play started on March 13. The play starts at 1 p.m. until approximately 8 p.m. Rest days, March 16, 20 and 24. The 11th and last round is on March 26. The players will play one rapid game and one blindfold game with reversed colours against the same opponent. An incremental time rate will be used. [See below for Larry Kaufman's claim about the first use of such time rates which are commonly now known as the Fischer time rates]
The early rounds of the Melody Amber tournament have produced their fair share of exciting chess. Bringing together so many strong players is bound to produce good chess even if the rapid time rate will also produce errors. Also the play tends to be a little more experimental in the opening. Apart from one or two outstanding examples in the past the rapid games tend to be of much higher quality than the blindfold games.
The battle of round 1 was between Anand and Karpov. Anand built up a very large advantage in the rapid game against Karpov but somehow frittered it away towards the end. Matthew Sadler's debut was crowned with a fine win in the rapid game against Predrag Nikolic but the early rounds have shown him less good at the blindfold side.
In a scrappy round 2 Ljubomir Ljubojevic outlasted Viswanathan Anand to produce a surprise win. Shirov and Ivanchuk produced a bewildering rapidplay game finished quite nicely by Shirov.
Round 3 saw Shirov relegate Karpov to the bottom of the standings after a 2-0 whitewash in their two games together and brilliantly so in their rapid game. Kramnik looks well set at the start of the event with a lead in the over all standings.

Letter from Larry Kaufman in response to last week's twic.
I am writing to protest an injustice that has been going on for several years now, and am only picking on you to complain to because your "TWIC" column is widely read and your perpetuating or correcting this injustice might make a difference to the chess world. First to introduce myself. I am an IM, FIDE 2410, live near Washington, D.C., age 50, and remain an active tournament player. I was chairman of the USCF ratings committe for most of the 1980s, and have been the top ranked non-Japanese player of Shogi (Japanese chess) for the past 15 years. In "TWIC 174", in your report of the upcoming Amber tourney, you refer to the idea of using time controls with increments added for each move as "Fischer time registration". I can hardly blame you, as virtually everyone in the chess world does likewise. When the only one using this method was Fischer himself in 1992, it hardly seemed worth commenting on. Now that even the FIDE World Championship, not to mention countless other events and Internet chess clubs, use this method of time control, its origin deserves to be uncovered. No one can say who first thought of an idea; in this case until digital chess clocks with advanced capabilities were marketed the idea of time increment was not practical. However such a clock was on the market around 1980, namely the "MicroMate" chess clock. It was not a commercial success, because the price was more than most chess players were willing to spend for a clock. However I believe a few hundred were made and sold; I myself bought two. Although it had various ways of keeping time listed in the manual, the increment method was not one of them. However after studying the clock at length, I realized it could indeed be set (albeit not easily!) to add an arbitrary increment to the time control after each move. I introduced this idea to the local shogi club, and it soon became the standard way for us to play shogi. I also introduced the idea to chess players, and while it did not win any general acceptance (partly due to the sparse number of clocks), a fair amount of fast chess was played in my circles with the idea. I then notified the clock's manufacturer (I believe his name was Joe Meshi or close to that name) of this capability of the clock, and all clocks sold after that contained an addendum explaining how to set the clock for this type of time control (my name for it was "accumulation"), and crediting me as the inventor. Alas, soon thereafter the clock was discontinued, and it was many years before another clock came out with that capability. Many years later I learned that Bobby Fischer was claiming to have invented this idea, and had even patented a clock with this capability. I had never thought that an idea like this could be patented, and I had and have no interest in making money from the idea, so I am writing this partly to reassure anyone who is either making clocks or running tournaments with this incremental time control that they have no moral or legal debt to Bobby Fischer, as he is not the inventor, and I hereby ask anyone in such a position not for money but only to credit me rather than Fischer as the inventor of incremental time controls. For the record, I am not accusing Fischer of pirating my idea; he may well have been unaware of the MicroMate clock situation and may have come up with the idea independently years later. I also must admit that without Fischer's endorsement the idea might never have taken hold. But I am tired of seeing the name "Fischer time control" being given to my invention.
The XVIII Reykjavik International which is part of the VISA Nordic Grand Prix 1998-9 is taking place March 10th-18th. After 5 of the 9 rounds Larry Christiansen leads outright on 4.5/5 from fellow American Nick DeFirmian and Anglo-Swiss player Joe Gallagher.

Hassan Khaled sends a report from an event which has just started in Egypt.
The Egyptian Chess Federation has organized the Golden Cleopatra Festival , sponsored by Eastern Company Club in Cairo. The event is underway and runs 11-22-March 1998.
The main event is a Scheveningen System Event where two groups of ten play each other. Group A consists of 10 top Egyptian players with an average rating of 2339. They play against Group B which has ten players from a number of countries (Ukraine, Hungary, Rumania and Mexico) with an average rating of 2432. There are 3 GMs Sax, Csom and Ghitescu. This makes it a Category 8 event for the Egyptions with a GM norm set at 7.5 and an IM norm at 5.5.
In addition there is a second event an Open Swiss System tournament, also of 10 Rounds. There are 106 players (32 Fide Rated players ) all of whom are from Egypt except for Vaysman,A (2345) from the Ukraine and Najjar,A (2265) from LIB and also 3 unrated players from LIB. More details of the Open Event next time.

Sinisa Joksic reports on the conclusion to the 32nd Women's Super Tournament.
Pia Cramling from Sweden and Natalia Zhukova from Ukrajina were the winners of the traditional Super tournament celebrating March 8th "Women's Day". They shared the prize money 2550 each, but Zhukova took the cup on Sonneborn-Berger tie break. Zhukova, who came as reserve for the tournament, and had the worst rating, had "a little" luck, in few games. Both winners were undefeated. Pia Cramling probably showing the best chess and leading throughout, only lost the cup in the last round! Sometimes chess is cruel and unjust. More was expected from Maia Chiburdanidze and Alisa Maric, and of course from Prudnikova and Peng. Maia lost to the youngest players Zhukova and Stefenova both 19th years old. Maybe, in the future, she should not play with the players under 20! Organization was a good.

The Cannes "Festival des Jeux" took place February 21st - March 1st 1998. A number of games including bridge, draughts, backgammon were involved and chess had a major part with several high profile events. Anatoly Karpov played an internet simultaneous event on Feb 28th on the Europe Echecs site. Due to the tightness of the schedule only three hours play were possible. 18 of the 22 games played are in the games section. Karpov won 7 and drew 1, unfortuately the rest of the games could not be finished. Martin Pribyl 2350 FIDE (and old friend of TWIC) was the strongest opponent but he unfortunately lost contact. You can read more details at the Europe Echecs site.
The Generations tournament was reported last week. In the games section is the key final round Korchnoi - Nataf game missing last week aswell as a corrected gamescore.
My thanks to Christophe Bouton and Europe Echecs for the information.

ICC Match: Argentina vs. Rest of World by John Fernandez
This past Tuesday, the Internet Chess Club hosted a match between ICC members from Argentina versus other hispanic ICC members. The match was wonderfully organized by team captains Hector Walsh (Argentina) and Christian Alcocer (Rest of the World), who both did a wonderful job of getting the best players to participate, and the match was directed by John Fernandez. It was held over eleven boards, with one Grandmaster, five International Masters, and three FIDE Masters competing. Well over half of the participants hold FIDE ratings (Which, considering that 9 of the 21 are FIDE titled, is not much of a surprise.) With the rest of the world team boasting 5 titled players, 9 players over 2300 ICC rating, and all over 2000, with an average rating of nearly 2300, they seemed poised to give the team from Argentina a hard time. However Argentina came in to fight, and fight they did, with some magnificently played games and some good upsets. Chilean IM Schroeder had the task of playing the Argentine board one, GM Pablo Ricardi, and after the dust settled we had seen two wonderful games that went right down to the wire, with IM Schroeder coming out on top in both. Sadly, Grandmaster Ricardi probably needed only a few more seconds in both games to put him right back in them, a feeling most of us chessplayers have had more than once in our lives. This, coupled with IM Blas Lugos 2-0 defeat of IM Pablo Glavina, gave the Rest of the World team a commanding 4-0 lead. However, Hector Walshs 1.5-0.5 victory over ICC member sagitarius and IM Mario Leskovars 2-0 win over Brazilian FM Rodrigues put Argentina right back in it. However, the Brazilian boards 5 and 6, Filho and de Oliveira Reis, respectively, both scored 2-0 wins to clinch it for the Rest of the World team. The games were played at a 10 0 time control on ICC. Jonathan Rowson (Scotland's most promising young IM) and Michael Adams (GM, England's No 1 and World Championship Semi-Finalist) are to play a six game Challenge Match from 16-21 April 1998. The match will be FIDE rated. The purse for the match is guaranteed and is privately sponsored and will be 5,000 -- 3,500 to the winner and 1,500 to the loser, and 2,500 each in the event of a draw. I am seeking additional sponsorship to cover the costs of a prestigious venue, live commentary from a leading player, an International Arbiter, Press Officer's / Web Master's expenses, and a fee for the organiser. Jonathan and Michael have agreed to play the match anywhere in London, but apparently moves are afoot to raise enough additional sponsorship to hold the match in Scotland, subject to the player's and organisers' agreement.
