My thanks to John Saunders, Chess Assistant, Nigel Freeman, Patrick Wolff, Gerald Schendel, Patrick Rasenberg, Massimiliano Orsi, Jan Vavrak, Guillermo Baches Garcia, Lost Boys, Antonio Bento and all those who helped with this issue.
The 60th Hoogovens tournament finished with Kramnik and Anand tied for first place. Neither looked at the very top of their form, indeed Kramnik played below his rating and Anand only around it. Nevertheless both looked like they had a lot to spare and they did in the end win the event. They both will be involved in the Linares tournament which has all the top players in the World apart from Karpov and Adams, the former at least had a very public falling out with the organiser last year. Kasparov heads the lineup. Linares starts around the 21st of this month.
In the next month there should be some concrete news about Kasparov's plans for the year which will include a defence of the World Title he holds. His claim is to the historical title running back to Steinitz. Patrick Wolff below supports his case. FIDE have upped the stakes a little. Although their initial plans were to have a championships every year it was thought impossible to finance it that frequently and a two year cycle was planned. Kirsan Iljumzhinov announced on the Chess Planet pages a reversion to the annual plan and that the next one will be held in 1998 in Las Vegas. In my opinion these are really non-competing championships, one classical chess, the other more of a brutal fight but if both take place this can be only good news for chess. I hope though that the FIDE Championships don't damage the traditional Hastings, Groningen and Wijk aan Zee tournaments all of which are events to be cherished. The loss of classical matches to determine the best player in the World would be a tragedy, but the contrasting FIDE event also determines something and if it can run annually and get public interest it will also build a tradition of its own. Kirsan Iljunzhinov also mounted a robust defence of the source of funding for the FIDE knockout in Groningen saying he can supply details as to the sponsors of the event and that FIDE has its own financial commission to monitor these things. This is something worth pursuing. FIDE are going to re-examine the regulations for their Championships. Eric Schiller is putting together proposals for double elimination, a concept similar to the repechage in rowing which would give a second chance to those eliminated in early rounds (think of Khalifman who was extremely unlucky to lose out to Anand this time).
All in all the prospects for 1998 look to be better by miles than 1997 and in the end for the chess fan that is what matters most. With some good promotion this may be a breakthrough year for chess in the mass media. Everyone should work for that.
In the games section I have republished all the games from the earlier rounds from Hoogovens as the ratings of a number of players have been corrected by FIDE.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The 60th Hoogovens Wijk aan Zee finished on February 1st and ended in a tie between Vladimir Kramnik and Viswanathan Anand. The two pre-tournament favourites were a point clear of Shirov, Timman and Adams. On 50% were Karpov, Polgar, Gelfand, Piket and Topalov.
Although its very dangerous to read anything into a single result, it does seem to confirm the impression of more than a year now that behind Kasparov, Kramnik and Anand are the best players. As I mentioned last week Kasparov seems to have let it be known that he would like to see a match between Anand and Kramnik to decide a challenger to play him in a match later this year. This brought an interesting response from Patrick Wolff who asked that if possible his comments be published.
"First, I think it is terribly funny that we seem to have gone back to the nineteenth century way of doing things, where the person acknowledged as World Champion simply by dint of being the best player in the world accepts challenges from those deemed to be worthy. I mean, after all, Kasparov is the PCA World Champion, which is fine except that as far as I can tell there is no PCA anymore.
Second, biting comments aside, I think Kasparov is absolutely right, and it's about time somebody says what is obviously true. It's been obvious to me for awhile that there are three people in the world right now who can really play chess: Kasparov, Kramnik, and Anand. Surely this is obvious to everyone else as well? Karpov was a truly great player, but he is no longer in the upper-upper elite. Ivanchuk is terrific, but not quite at the highest level, perhaps because of his nerves more than anything else. Topalov has great talent, but has not yet reached the stratosphere. Shirov is obviously brilliant, but too erratic and usually not capable of facing the big three. Who else is there? Isn't it just obvious to everyone in the world who knows anything about chess that Anand and Kramnik are extremely close together, and that only one of them would be a worthy challenger to Kasparov? Ask yourself: Wouldn't you see the winner of a match between the two of them as clearly the most legitimate challenger to Kasparov?"
Kramnik got the show back on the road in the final rounds by getting +2. His four win start was probably a little unfortunate for him and once he lost in the fifth round he had trouble getting his tournament back on track. He drew against Topalov in round 10, even having to be a little careful with white. In round 11 he had black against Judit Polgar against whom he has a tremendous record. After the game seemed to be heading for a draw he found some truly wicked endgame ideas which place Polgar under extreme pressure, indeed she could not solve the problems in the end. He needed to win against Van der Sterren who was in poor form in the event. It looked like he might not do this after losing the opening battle. But Van der Sterren struggled to find a plan in the favourable position and got into trouble again. He almost set up the combination that he walked into in the end. In the final round there was the showdown between Karpov and Kramnik. It turned into a bit of a damp squib. Karpov played for a minor edge and Kramnik wasn't taking any stupid risks. The result a position which was sterile and agreed drawn.
Anand finished the event with a win and three draws. He beat tail ender Nijboer in classic style. A sharp opening, well prepared and after fending off the Dutchman's attacking efforts he simply had a winning position. A smooth game. He drew games against Adams in Gelfand which were well played by both sides. In the final round he drew a fluctuating struggle against Shirov. Shirov's speciality variation of the Ruy Lopez with 6. ...Bc5 (called maybe the Arkangel Variation?) has become very popular recently. Here he got an edge in the early middlegame. However after not playing 20. ...Nc6 Anand was better again. However Shirov put the breaks on and found just a level position where the draw was agreed.
Shirov was pretty unlucky not to finish higher. A very solid result in Wijk aan Zee was spoiled a bit by not being able to convert in round 11 against Van Wely (and earlier against Karpov where he stood very well) and then a near mugging from Salov where a good position went sour very quickly. In the final round he had his chances against Anand too.
Timman scored one of his best results in a super-tournament for quite some time. Whilst I'd be reluctant to suggest this for every chess player he clearly benifitted from a lack of ambition here. Timman's problem in recent years has been to take on very sharp positions and then blunder them away. Here he took the draws when they were there and used excellent technique to win the favourable positions. A final round win against Salov rounded off a good event.
Michael Adams also has a solid reputation. Here he lost to Kramnik, Shirov and Timman at the top but beat the bottom 5 finishers. He drew against the rest.
Karpov was one of five on 50%. With four rounds to go Karpov could go one of two ways, down to disaster or start doing something. He restored some respectibility by beating Polgar with a well chosen variation of the Grunfeld. Then he took a point off the struggling Van der Sterren. This had to do as he drew against Piket and Kramnik in the final two rounds. Karpov's problem is that he can't get enough of the positions such as he had against Polgar and is capable of overlooking tactics such as he fell to against Salov and Topalov.
Judit Polgar's rating has been 2670 for two consecutive lists now and that's the performance she scored here. It could have been better if she could have held on against Karpov and Kramnik. Nevertheless there was the compensation of beating Anand for the first time since 1991. Elsewhere she was solid without being spectacular.
Gelfand too had a stable tournament without really generating too many chances even against the tail enders.
Rated at 2575 in the latest rating list Jeroen Piket really needed a good result here. He got a solid performance which should do his confidence some good.
The reverse was true of Topalov who had a wildly fluctuating event. He hasn't really recovered his best form of 1996 where he was definitely the player of the year. He's tried to broaden his repertoire but hasn't got all of it to gell. In particular his advocacy of the Modern Benoni seems perverse. After a good start his tournament got derailed by consecutive losses to Anand and Piket. He got away with some very sharp play to beat Karpov but missed Adams Bf1 in round 12 to sink back to 50%.
Salov played some very creative chess throughout the event but struggled to recover from -3 after 6 rounds. Wins against Karpov, Gelfand and Shirov showed that his result should have been better. A lack of invitations is probably the problem.
Nijboer actually scored a result just above his rating. He lost four games against the top half and beat Piket drawing the rest of his games.
Van Wely beat Kramnik but otherwise had a terrible tournament. Van der Sterren could have done much better but somehow his confidence seemed low. He didn't perform much below his current rating but his understanding of the game should make him better than that.

The B event Rustam Kasimdzhanov seemed destined to win the event without problems. However his huge 9/11 score was equalled by Dimitri Reinderman. Reinderman achieved this by taking some large risks in his final round game against Kasimdzhanov. They both scored performances around 2750 and were 3! points clear of the rest of the field.

Whether this will be the final 1998 top 100 FIDE list I'm not sure. A number of Federations have now paid FIDE and will have their players reintroduced so Tkachiev may very well be back. The changes which produced the list below involve a Dutch Team event which was rated in July and again in January. The main benificiary is Timman whose rating rises. Players like Oll, Korchnoi and Vaganian were effected and finally the changes mean that Nijboer is no longer in the top 100.

In the Four Nations Chess League (for British Teams) the Midland Monarchs kept their 100% record by beating a strengthened Slough team, however in the sixth round it was held for the first time by Richmond. Invicta Knights are 2 points behind. The 5th and 6th rounds took place in Birmingham (round 6 results next week) 24th-25th January 1998. My thanks to John Saunders for the games.
