1) Introduction

My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Greg Joseph, and everyone else who helped with this issue.

The Chess Olympiad has concluded with a win for the hosts Uzbekistan in the Open event and China in the women's. This has certainly been one of the most eventful and interesting Olympiads in years. I believe this, and the late stages of the World Championship Cycle tell us a lot about the health of the game, I think it's in the best shape it's been in for years. A real poke in the eye for those trying to sell us the story of "remistod im schach" as an excuse to make the game faster and faster. I really haven't had chance to take it all in and may try write some stories about the event. There was an overwhelming amount of great chess played. As it is things have gone very quiet now. There may be very thin pickings next week.

2) 46th World Chess Olympiad 2026

The 46th World Chess Olympiad took place Wed 16th to Sun 27th Sep 2026 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The hosts Uzbekistan won the event for the second time. The pressure on the home team players must have been tremendous as there had been a very large investment in getting them to top form. As it was they were very convincing winner, they lost one match, against Germany but won the rest beating rivals India and USA. Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus took silver) took Gold medal on Board one. India finished second and Germany third. The women's event was scarcely less interesting with an on paper under-powered China side winning Gold ahead of Kazakhstan and India.
