One event. Karpov beats Anand to retain his FIDE World Championship title. It is impossible to write objectively about a match that I regard as having conditions which were so manifestly unfair to one of the participants. Such a match was that between Anatoly Karpov and Viswanathan Anand. Anand had to play 6 matches (23 games in total) with only a small number of rest days in just over 3 weeks and then required to travel with only two days available to play a match against one of the 13 greatest players in chess history. I know pointing this out upsets a lot of Karpov fans, but from my point of view it is the truth. Karpov at least has $1m to comfort himself against the widespread belief that he won the match because of the regulations. That Anand came so close to holding Karpov is a tribute to his current playing strength. Karpov, of course was placed in an almost impossible position. To reject the conditions offered to him would have required the kind of personal sacrifice that very few are capable of, and I include myself here. Would Karpov have won without these advantages? We will never know. I thought long and hard about what I should say about this. If you as readers disagree then all I can say is that I am telling it how I see it, how I believe it truly to be.
Away from the Championships this was an extremely active week in World chess so there is plenty else to look at.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The opening ceremony for the final stages of the FIDE World Chess Championships in Lausanne took place on the 1st January 1998 in the Olympic Museum. The final match saw Viswanathan Anand take on Anatoly Karpov over a six game match followed by rapidplay games if the match was tied.. Whereas Karpov had been preparing to play a match for several weeks, Anand only had 4 hours of preparation after arriving from Groningen and 23 games simply to qualify. The six game match itself was dominated by Karpov who but for two one move blunders would have settled the match in regulation time. Instead it went to a rapid playoff where Anand secured a huge advantage both on the clock and the board in the first game, and he had black. Then he thought for a number of minutes before playing a highly risky line in which he changed his mind half way through and lost. Ten minutes later he started the second game where he quickly got an inferior if not lost position. In less than half an hour he had wrecked the best part of a weeks work and lost half a million dollars.
Karpov took away the best part of a million dollars for a weeks work. Anand just over half a million. Calculations of the rest of the prize money can be found at: http://www.store2.com/uschess/news/world97_prizes.html, the United States Chess Federation site.
Day 4 6th January 1998
Anand 0-1 Karpov
An abysmal performance by Viswanathan Anand today lead to a loss with white against Anatoly Karpov. After 12. h4 Karpov thought for half an hour before playing a novelty of 12. ...Nf5. Anand thought for some time and rejected what looked like a small advantage with Bxf5 for more agressive options. Anand continued actively with 16. Ne5 and conceded the two bishops which were returned immediately. At this point he found a bad plan wrecking his pawn structure and leaving himself with weak pawns and a bad bishop. Karpov didn't seem to make the best of his chances and with plenty of time on the clock a draw seemed likely. Anand however he seemed to choose the wrong plan in the bishops of opposite colour ending also and lost quite easily.
Day 5 7th January 1998
Karpov 1/2 Anand
Karpov followed Khalifman-Anand from earlier in the event with Karpov varying with 12. Ne4. Anand's 16. ...exd4 was a controversial decision leading to a small but clear edge to white. Anand played the sharp 19. ...g5 which Karpov met by taking Queens off and having a small technical edge. Both players seemed happy to play the ending and Karpov emerged with an active King and passed d pawn. All these were traded off into a dead drawn Rook ending. Anand was reported to be very relieved to take the match into the final day.
Day 6 8th January
Anand 1-0 Karpov Trompowsky 42 moves
A Trompovsky by Anand lead to a complex position in which Karpov blundered a piece. Karpov appeared very nervous towards the end of the game. His 28. ...Qd8 was the losing move when he was already on the edge of his seat whilst analysing. Better was 28. ...Rxg6 29. Rf8+ Rxf8 30. Qxf8+ Nc8 when the position is probably level or a little better for black. He resigned on move 42. Karpov left the venue almost instantly leaving his minders to try and catch him up. After the match Karpov had no explanation of his blunder. He has seen his continuation was wrong and the correct on but simply couldn't play it.

"I might have lost, but I don't recognise Anatoly Karpov as World Champion. The title of World Champion is vacant." Anand
Viswanathan Anand believes that he won one of the strongest events of all time, that which took place in Groningen. He said that before the coda of the match against Karpov which he claims was conducted under such strongly unfavourable conditions that the result cannot be taken seriously. To a greater or lesser degree he seems to have received support for this view amongst fellow professionals and journalists after the event finished. He was relieved even to take the match to a tie-break.
The fatal tie break game passed in a blur to Anand. He thought for a long time over 40. ...a4 seeing a long way but suddenly the depth of the variations confused him and he played the "crazy" a4. He was in praise of the knockout system as a whole but condemned the advantage that Karpov had in being seeded to the final as being totally unfair. He was proud of the victory he scored in Groningen but pointed to the 31 games he has played in the last month compared to Karpov's 8. He believed that whilst in general he had played very well fatigue started to be a factor from the time of his match against Gelfand. In that match Gelfand himself made a terrible blunder to be eliminated. One might feel this is unjust on Karpov but although many Karpov supporters deny it many believe the advantage of preparing technically, physically and mentally for a challenger who had to qualify as Anand did was a huge advantage. Karpov felt the match was a hard one for him but that his superior knowledge of match play took him through. Almost no professional player I have talked to agrees with this.
Unity
The whole point of FIDE's plan of seeding Karpov and Kasparov through to the final was to produce conditions which they felt would almost guarantee the participation of Karpov and Kasparov. Kasparov claims he refused because "I would never play for such a large prize fund without knowing the direct source of the money". Also he believes (along with the a number of the top professionals) that the knockout over such a short period of games is wrong. Kramnik the World number 2 also refused the invitation because he felt that the advantage granted to Karpov was too large. He felt Karpov had a 70% chance of winning the event simply due to the advantage of being seeded to the final and the unremitting nature of the contest as a whole. Most played simply because they need to earn a living. Short said that Kramnik was the only player who had any self respect by turning down the invitation in the wake of the unfair seeding of Karpov.
In the closing ceremony Juan Antonio Samaranche said that the way was clear for chess to appear in the Olympics provided there was "unity". This was a remark clearly aimed at the non-participation of Kasparov (Kramnik has said he sees no objection to competing provided the advantages granted to Karpov are not present next time, although he too would prefer a classical World Chess championships) It is difficult to see Kasparov overcoming the objections he had this time for next time. Especially as FIDE have promised that seeding will only take a player to the second round at maximum. Although the result may not have been the one they wished for FIDE regard the experiment as a success and that problems of scheduling and the length of the matches can be solved for next time. They stress that this is a sporting event, not one aimed at necessarily determining the best player (for which one can use the rating list to find out). Also after some early shocks the best players progressed which has encouraged them.
Karpov in London effectively said that he thought the whole format was wrong and called for the reintroduction of Candidates Tournaments as the best way to determine the challenger. The mix of normal play and rapidplay was like determining a tie in a Marathon by a 100 metres race he claimed.
Samaranch congratulated Karpov on winning but moved to Spanish to say to Anand (who lives in Spain much of the time "Anand, I know you speak Spanish very well. You will be a future world champion."
It was extremely noticable throughout the closing ceremony that the reception for Anand was warm and that for Karpov much cooler. Perhaps the only way that Karpov could have enhanced his reputation in this event would have been to voluntarily agreed to join the event in the 3rd or 4th round. As it was he was guaranteed $1/2m and in fact took away $1m for one weeks play. I'm not sure there are many who could resist such an offer. He took the contract which even FIDE have tacitly conceded was ill thought out to the letter. Whilst the general public will recognise his title there seems even at this stage little professional recognition for his achievement in winning this match.
Para-psychologists
This author would rather believe the moon is made of cream cheese than the effectiveness of parapsychologists. In 1978 Karpov employed Vladimir Zukhar during his match against Korchnoi, a man who was reported to be a parapsychologist and might indeed have had an effect on Korchnoi who believes in such superstitious nonesense. Anand does not and probably was not aware of one being present this time even if there was. "El Pais" and its chess journalist Leontxo Garcia published a story saying that one was present in Karpov's camp during this match. If true this probably indicates how desperate Karpov was to win the match. I guess it must have done him more good than any possible effect that it could have had on Anand.
Two festivals which have occupied this place in the calendar for many years.
Carlo Mazzoni reports on the 40th Reggio Emilia tournament. ("Capodanno" of Reggio Emilia (Italy)) It was also the 57th Italian Championships with the eight Italians being eligible to win the title. The event was Category 10 and finished on January 6th 1998.
Dimitri Komarov took the 40th tournament on tie break from Leonid Yudasin, both scoring 7.5. Igor Efimov finished 3rd and also took the the Italian Championships. Level with him was Smbat Lputian. Efimov, Arlandi and Tatai qualified to play in next year's Italian Championships. No-one scored any title norms. Ennio Arlandi could have fulfilled his third GM norm in ninth round (by winning instead of drawing) and in tenth (by winning instead of losing). Fabio Bellini could have fulfilled his second IM norm in eleventh round, by winning instead of losing.

The 73rd Hastings Chess Congress took place between December 29th 1997 and January 11th 1998. The 10 player Category 13 Premier event was in the Cinque Ports Hotel. Matthew Sadler scored a convincing win, rather unusually scoring very heavily against his closest rivals but drawing against the tail enders. The event was a triumph for second place Relange who scored a GM norm with a round to go.
The Challengers events was won by Sergei Shipov of Russian and Mikhail Saltaev of Uzbekistan with 8.5/11. Keith Arkell, John Emms, Mikhail Iuldachev and Alexander Volzhin scored 8 to finish 3rd= and Vladimir Belov, Erling Mortensen Azer Mirzoev and Neil McDonald scored 7.5 to share 7th. Viraf Avari of India won the World Amateur Championships with Rosalind Kieran aged only 14 winning the women's event.

The FIDE rating list is due to be released on 13th January 1998. It is rumoured that the delay was due to discussions about what to do about players from countries who had not paid their FIDE dues.. On the 12th September1997 more than 20 countries had not paid according to Willy Icklicki on the Chess Planet pages.
The Paul Keres' memorial rapid (25+25) tournament was played in Tallinn this weekend. Paul Keres was born on January 7th 82 years ago. The qualification tournament started on Friday and finished Saturday morning. After seven rounds the five highest rated players qualified: 1.-2. GMs Ulf Andersson (Sweden), Normunds Miezis (Latvia) 5,5, 3.-5. Aleksander Wojtkiewicz (Poland), Suat Atalik (Turkey) and IM Olegs Krivonosovs (Latvia) 5. These five chessplayers together lost only a single game: Atalik to Robert Sevtsenko but the latter together with other Estonian players Vallo Maidla, Tarvo Seeman and reigning champion Roman Sergejev with 4,5 points were the players who just missed out qualifying to play in the main event. The surprise best local player in the last year Keres' memorial Riho Liiva, new Estonian GM Mihhail Rotsagov and the five time champion Olav Sepp did not participate this year.
The main tournament was played on January 10-11. Three ex-champions of the world Boris Spasski (France), Nona Gaprindashvili (Georgia) and Xie Jun (China) together with Estonian GMs Jaan Ehlvest and Lembit Oll were invited without qualification. After the first day Suat Atalik had 4 points of four - a full point more than Oll and Spassky. On Sunday Atalik lost to Miezis and Oll - the only palyer who did not lost a single game - finished equal with the Turkish GM. According the regulation both were equal winners and the gap with the followers was very big in the such short tournament.
The event continues the tradition of inviting players who have played against Keres and also leading woman players. For instance Spassky and Andersson played together in Tallinn 1973 international tournament with Keres, the only game between Keres and Gaprindashvili ended a draw after 54 moves in Hastings, January 1965. Text by Mart Tarmak, the games were made available by Jaan Narva

Anjo Anjewierden reports that the beginning of January saw the last of the Dutch semi-finals in the traditional sense. The Dutch federation wants to integrate the semi-finals with the Dutch open (so to qualify for Dutch championships one may have to win against a player from the Philipines). All this is, of course, to save money: one tournament with two titles is cheaper than two tournaments. Thirty players participated in a 9-round Swiss open. IM Karel van der Weide looked a certain candidate with 6 / 7, one point ahead of the pack. He then lost to GM Roberto Cifuentes Parada and escaped with a draw in a lost position in the last round. Cifuentes and 18/19-year old Sipke Ernst caught up with Van der Weide and also finished on 6 1/2 / 9. The net result: three players for two qualifying places. The tie-break will take place over the Easter weekend. The Dutch championship will likely be in June, no definite date is known as yet. (Kroeze defaulted in the last round)

A quicker than usual glance over the past year but its useful to have a look at the top results of the year. Not a vintage one I think with the defeat of Kasparov by a computer in a six game exhibition match taking all the headlines. No one player took all the headlines although Kramnik seemed to take some strides forward. Anand's victory in Groningen took us into 1998. My thanks to all those who sent news, reports, games or even encouragement in 1997.

He will play in both the United States Masters (which is also the 5th Hawaii International) and the United States Open. He joins over a dozen other confirmed Grandmaster participants, including United States Champion Joel Benjamin (USA), Defending US Masters and Hawaii International Champion Suat Atalik (Turkey), defending US Open Champion Alex Yermolinsky (USA) and World Junior Champion Tal Shaked (USA). Top women and junior stars have also been invited to the Festival, which is open to all. We are especially pleased to announce Short's participation because like many top players, he does not play in open events in America, since they usually involve a grueling schedule of two games per day. The Hawaii tournaments are run on a European model and are played under professional conditions. They are part of the 1998 American Chess Tour which is expected to involve at least 25 Grandmasters and participants from at least 20 countries. The Hawaii International Chess Festival includes numerous tournaments, exhibitions, clinics and toursistic activities. Over $40,000 in prize money will be available. There are also competitions in other mind sports including chess variants, Magic the Gathering, Checkers (draughts), Bridge, Backgammon etc. Details are at http://www.chessworks.com or via email from hawaii@chessworks.com.
