My thanks to Chess Planet, Lost Boys, Harald Grafenhofer, Pam Thomas, Net64/El Pais, Groningen organisers, Carlo Mazzoni, Michael Atkins, Angel Martin and all those who helped with this issue.
Tension is now rising to boiling point in the FIDE World Championship knockout event with Viswanathan Anand and Anatoly Karpov level at 1.5 points apiece. Karpov dominated the early exchanges and could have been 2.5 - 0.5 ahead having missed a completely winning chance in game two. However Karpov has demonstrated that he is at least well prepared theoretically for the match. Anand is playing agressively on instinct and the final result is very hard to predict. The next game is tomorrow and in three or four days the new FIDE Champion will be known. Elsewhere chess has restarted after the players returned from Groningen, with a number of Christmas festivals throughout the World to give a quite nice variety of events.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The opening ceremony for the FIDE World Chess Championships took place on December 8th 1997 in Groningen in the Netherlands and finished on the 30th with the first sudden death game between Anand and Adams. The result saw the ELO favourite for the Groningen leg (and indeed for the event as a whole go through) Viswanathan Anand go through. Then there followed a quick move to Switzerland by Anand and his team, which due to the lateness of the day (and the fact that the players had to book their own flights, flights which they weren't sure they needed) looked at one stage might have to be by train. In the end a flight was sorted out. Anand then was at the opening ceremony of the final match of the event on the 1st January 1997 in Lausanne Switzerland in the Olympic Museum. One consolation for all the players is that in spite of some very sceptical comments from the players David Jarrett is reported to have confirmed that all the prize money for the championships has arrived and the players will be paid.
A very tense playoff between Michael Adams and Viswanathan Anand took place on the last day of the Groningen event. Anand generally dominated the rapid playoffs without managing to put Adams away until the introduction of the blitz sudden death game. In the first he played aggresssively against Anand's Caro Cann but couldn't really call on a real advantage. The second game was Adam's best chance, his closed Sicilian came close to breaking through although Anand's huge advantage on the clock played a part. No concrete winning line has been found so perhaps there was nothing. The third game was again a Sicilian closed and after some correct play a draw was agreed. The fourth game was a fascinating struggle in the English but one that didn't leave a draw. The players passed to the blitz game where Anand quickly built up a time advantage in spite of having less at the start. 14. c5 lead to a huge advantage and to all appearances this lead directly to a win. However Anand 26. Rf3 was poor when 26. ...Qg5 27. Qe1 f5! might objectively turn the tables although the time advantage for Anand at this stage might have still given him the win. As it was Anand simply throttled Adams.

Viswanathan Anand and Anatoly Karpov started their 6 game match on January 2nd 1998. Anand has a +6 -3 =15 career record against Karpov and had not lost to Karpov in anything other than fast chess since 1991. Karpov and Anand have played a World Championship qualifying match together before, in 1991, when Karpov emerged as the winner 4.5 - 3.5 even though Anand dominated much of the match. Only Nigel Short and Garry Kasparov have defeated Karpov in serious match play. Karpov is taking the match very seriously and has Alexander Onischuk, Vladimir Tukmakov,Mikhail Podgaets and Jaan Ehlvest working for him. Anand has long term second Elizbar Ubilava aswell as Peter Leko and Artur Jussupow. Ubilava has worked with Karpov in the past. The match could have effectively ended after two games when Karpov missed a chance to take a 2-0 lead.
Day 1 2nd January 1998
Karpov 1-0 Anand
The level of Anand's problems in playing a well prepared and rested
Anatoly Karpov were seen in the first game. Anatoly Karpov and his team
found a powerful knight sacrifice 17. Ndb5 which Anand found difficult to
handle. 22. ...Rc8 rather than grabbing the e pawn was the first decision
for Anand. Then his 19. ...Qd6 was played after some thought, probably
with the intention of playing a long forcing line in which Anand probably
overlooked 31. Qxg7 the following move he could have backed out taking an
inferior ending with 20. ..Qb8 but he probably already intended the sac
with Kf7. It is an interesting question to speculate how far Karpov's
preparation stretched but it is not inconceivable that it went all the way
to this move. The ending was slightly tricky but winning, Karpov took 108
moves to win it but didn't seem to hurry.
Day 2 3rd January 1998
Anand 1-0 Karpov
Anatoly Karpov surprised everyone by playing 5. ...Bc5 in a Ruy
Lopez. Anand seemed to be the first with a novelty. 14. Qe2 seems to be
new but not especially good. 18. d4 introduced interesting complications
and Karpov's 19. ...Rxf3 saccing the exchange was an interesting chance
offering Anand the chance of equality with dxc5 or risk with the
acceptance of the exchange. Anand fell behind on the clock and it seems he
became very nervous playing 31. Bb6 (which was actually a fingerslip)
instead of the better a6 which is complicated but might have promised an
advantage. 33. Be3 was perhaps better than 33. Rc1. In mutual time trouble
Karpov missed a chance to effectively finish the match in an instant.
Instead of 34. ...h6?? producing a losing position 34. ...Ne2+ 35. Kf1
Qe8 (a real computer move possibly Karpov saw only Qe6) was winning. Anand
made no mistake and Karpov was left to look at the ruins of his position
after first time control and to resign some time later.
Day 3 4th January 1998
Karpov 1/2 Anand
A Karpov novelty (14. Bb2) was followed by a 35 minute think by
Karpov on his 15th move before playing 15. Qc2, it is probable that Karpov
discovered something wrong with his intended continuation and after that
he steered the game firmly to a draw.
