1) Introduction

My thanks to Chess Planet, Lost Boys, Ian Rogers, Europe Echecs, Sinisa Joksic, Laszlo Nagy, John Saunders, Chess in Croatia and all those who helped with this issue.

Tomorrow will see Adams and Anand go into the final playoffs of the Groningen leg of the FIDE World Chess Championships. I'm feeling tired processing all the games so goodness knows how they feel. They are certainly showing signs of tiredness yet they have to then fly to Lausanne to play a 6 game match with Karpov after this. Whoever wins I wish them good luck but I suspect they will be hard pushed to keep going for another week. This week saw a fantastic match between Short and Adams which ended in the first sudden death game with victory for Adams, both players have contributed much to the Championships. Anand's passage was a little easier when he beat Gelfand after he blundered in the opening. The final so far has seen 4 draws but full of content and although Anand has had something of the better of it it has been a very interesting match. One hopes they will be able to find a suitable finish tomorrow. I have been quite pushed for time this week so a roundup of the final games in Groningen will take place next week.

Happy New Year

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) FIDE World Chess Championships

The opening ceremony for the FIDE World Chess Championships took place on December 8th 1997 in Groningen in the Netherlands. The event is now entering its final phase in the Netherlands with Adams playing Short and Gelfand playing Anand. The winners of these matches will play a four game match to decide who will play a six game match with Karpov in Lausanne.

Round 6 23rd-25th December 1997

A full round up of the matches will take place on my pages at the conclusion of the Groningen leg and in twic next week. Anand got past Gelfand after Gelfand didn't make any headway with white after playing the wrong variation in game one. In game two in an interesting position Gelfand blundered and was forced to sacrifice a piece almost straight out of the opening and lost. Short and Adams shared two fine wins in the normal timerate games before playing four fluctuating draws in the rapidplay games. Adams impressed winning in the first sudden death game to go through.

Round 7 26th-30th December 1997

Four draws in the normal time rate games take Adams and Anand into the playoffs tomorrow. Adams had very strong pressure in the first game but after that he has given the impression of hanging on. Anand looked better in game two without generating anything really concrete in game 2. In game 3 he is thought to have missed 29. ...Bd4 with a winning position before allowing Adams to squirm out. In game four Adams played the Marshall and perhaps should have taken the a6 pawn with his queen rather than the d5 pawn but this hasn't been analysed fully. The players are reported to be very tired and the playoffs make it even more probable that Karpov will play an opponent totally burnt out by a punishing schedule.

3) FIDE Women's Candidates

Alongside the FIDE Championships in Groningen was the women's Candidates tournament. The ten player double round robin, was won by Alisa Galliamova of Russia who dominated the event. The battle for second place was between Chiburdanidze, Xie Jun and Ioseliani all of who could have qualified for the important second place which entitles them to play Galliamova in a match for the right to meet Zsuzsa Polgar. The top players all met. Galliamova demolishing Chiburdinadze and Xie Jun dominating against Ioseliani. Just when everything was in her favour, she was up on the clock and had a huge position, Xie Jun almost wrecked her chances. 37. ...Qxa4 was a huge chance which as likely as not would have led to Ioseliani winning and taking second place. However once she missed this chance Xie Jun brought home the point easily.
