1) Introduction

My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Holger Lieske, Gregory Joseph, David Llada, Dennis Monokroussos and everyone else who helped with this issue.

The death of Daniel Naroditsky at the far too early age of 29 was news I didn't learn of until Tuesday morning, I could not have been more shocked. We do not know the full circumstances of his passing yet and sadly for his family this is likely to drag out in public for a long time. He will be sorely missed. Then yesterday we learned of the passing of Mihai Suba, I had heard he was very poorly a few years ago so the news wasn't such a big surprise but his book Dynamic Chess Strategy is still well worth a read.

The European Club Cup was won by SuperChess and World Champion Gukesh was central to winning the key fixture when he beat Erigaisi. Gukesh then traveled to Saint Louis to play in a Clutch Chess event and finished day one in the lead in spite of a loss to Magnus Carlsen, with points increasing day by day there's a long way to go. The US Chess Championships saw Fabiano Caruana and Carissa Yip emerge victorious. Lots of great chess to look at.

2) 40th European Club Cup 2025

The 40th European Club Cup and 29th Club Cup for Women took place in Rhodes, Greece, 19th to 25th October 2025.

The top teams were:

Cercle d'échecs de Monte-Carlo, Turkish Airlines sports club, Tajfun SK Ljubljana, and SuperChess were the top seeds in the women's event.

There was a wide variety of player strengths competing.

4th seeds SuperChess claimed the title ahead of Alkaloid and Novy Bor.

Cercle d'échecs de Monte-Carlo won the women's title ahead of Sirmium Sremska Mitrovica and Tajfun SK Ljubljana.

The numbering of the games in the live feed for the open event was a bit strange for at least some rounds. I decided just to leave as broadcast.

The US Chess Championships took place in Saint Louis Sun 12th Oct to Sat 25th Oct 2025. Fabiano Caruana won his fifth title and Carissa Yip her fourth.

Fabiano Caruana secured his fifth U.S. Championship, and fourth consecutive title, after a fairly quick final-round draw against Levon Aronian in Saint Louis. The result proved sufficient, but Caruana had to wait for Wesley So’s game to finish to confirm his victory. A win by So over Grigoriy Oparin would have forced a playoff, but So had to settle for a draw, finishing in clear second place. Caruana had missed a golden opportunity to defeat So in Round 6, failing to convert a completely winning position.

Undefeated throughout the event, Caruana scored wins against: - Grigoriy Oparin (Round 1) - Dariusz Swiercz (Round 5) - Hans Moke Niemann (Round 7), in a crushing victory sparked by a surprise in the opening - Sam Shankland (Round 9), who blundered in a level position on move 39, leaving his king in desperate trouble - Abhimanyu Mishra, in a long grind where Caruana generated winning chances only late in the game.

His four consecutive titles tie Bobby Fischer’s record. However, Fischer won all eight of his appearances, missing only one year to prepare for the World Championship Interzonal. Still, four in a row is a mighty impressive feat.

Among the younger talents: - 15-year-old Andy Woodward impressed with a solid 5.5/11 score, finishing mid-table. - 16-year-old Abhimanyu Mishra struggled, tying for last place with 4/11.

Carissa Yip has claimed her fourth U.S. Women’s Chess Championship title in five years, securing victory in the final round with a win against Thalia Cervantes Landeiro with the black pieces. The turning point came after Cervantes’ mistake with 19.Bd4?, compounded by 21.Rad1?, leaving Yip clearly winning.

Meanwhile her closest rival Anna Sargsyan was the beneficiary of a very serious blunder 34.Re1? (34.Rd3!=) by Alice Lee which was almost immediately decisive, she took second place alone after Irina Krush could only draw against her long term rival Anna Zatonskih.

Yip's road to the title was not straightforward. She had an early setback when she lost to Atousa Pourkashiyan in Round 1, who ultimately finished last. After three draws she scored 6.5/7 to take the title. In Round 5: Defeated Anna Sargsyan, Round 6: Beat Irina Krush, Round 7 draw against Jennifer Yu, Round 8: won against Megan Althea Paragua, Round 9: Rose Atwell, Round 10: Nazi Paikidze, and in Round 11 clinched the title vs. Cervantes Landeiro.

Yip announced that she had left Stanford University to play chess full time in March and whilst she did win the Cairns Cup her performance in the Women's Grand Swiss was disappointing.

This is Yip's fourth title in five years and in the end she was impressive doing it. Irina Krush needs one more title to reach the record total of nine by Gisela Kahn Gresser, maybe time is running out for her as there are so many young talents. I've been impressed by Rose Atwell's posts on Twitter as she as improved steadily over the last year or two, talking about her games win or lose.

4) Clutch Chess: Champions Showdown 2025

The Clutch Chess: Champions Showdown takes place in Saint Louis Mon 27th Oct to Wed 29th Oct 2025. Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura and World Champion Gukesh play three days of fast rapid chess (10m+5spm), a double round robin each day, eventually adding up to 18 rounds. Play starts at midday local time (5pm GMT).

Clutch Chess is concept invented by Maurice Ashley and the key is its scoring system which increases over the course of the event. On day one there is the standard scoring system of one, half and zero, day two doubles that, day three trebles the standard score. The event is described as "a comeback-friendly format that cultivates increased tension and fan excitement into the very last round" (ymmv).

40) Daniel Naroditsky 1995-2025

The death of Daniel Naroditsky at the age of only 29 has come as a great shock. Naroditsky was a well known chess commentator and streamer who became a GM in 2013 and had a peak rating of 2647 in May 2017. His play was limited to mostly blitz in recent years, both online and over the board, although his fifth and final appearance in the US Championships was as recent as 2021.

Daniel Naroditsky (November 9, 1995 to October 19, 2025 was born in San Mateo, California. He learned chess at the age of six. In 2007 he won the World Youth U12 Championships. He qualified for the US Championships in 2011 with a high finish in the 2010 US Open.

Naroditsky became a GM in 2013 after GM norms in the Benasque Open, July 2011, Philadelphia Open 2013 and then the final one in a return to the Benasque Open in 2013.

A published author by age 14, Naroditsky released Mastering Positional Chess in 2010, followed by Mastering Complex Endgames in 2012, both published by New in Chess.

Naroditsky's chess activities were dominated with work online, streaming, commentating and playing blitz on chess.com. In 2024 Vladimir Kramnik accused him of cheating in online blitz events and the vituperative exchanges between them came to dominate his public life in the final year.

Naroditsky returned to online streaming after a long break just a few days ago and the resulting video called "You Thought I Was Gone!? Speedrun Returns!" was his final work. This was an edited version of a longer stream where he was at points visibly destressed and unwell and just before he finished he talked about the Kramnik allegations "ever since the Kramnik stuff, people assume the worst of intentions." before a friend advised him to stop streaming.

From 2020 to his death in 2025 he was the Grandmaster-in-Residence at the Charlotte Chess Center.

There were many heartfelt tributes to Naroditsky ("Danya" to his friends) on news of his passing from players such as Hikaru Nakamura and Benjamin Bok. I really enjoyed his work as a commentator as he was clear and articulate about the game.

41) Mihai Suba 1947-2025

RIP Mihai Suba (Bucharest 1 June 1947 - Spain 26 October 2025, aged 78) Suba was a Romanian-born chess player who became an International Master in 1975 and a Grandmaster in 1978.

Suba didn’t begin playing chess until the unusually late age of 19, yet within just a few years he had risen to become a formidable competitor. He was crowned Romanian Champion three times - in 1980, 1981, and 1985 - and narrowly missed qualifying for the Candidates Tournament after finishing third at the 1982 Las Palmas Interzonal.

Among his tournament triumphs were first place at Dortmund 1983, and shared first at Prague 1985 and Timisoara 1987. In 1988, during the Lloyds Bank Masters in London, Suba defected from Romania to England, though he would soon represent his home country again after the fall of the communist regime. In 2017, he transferred his federation to Spain, having spent much of his life there.

His book Dynamic Chess Strategy, first published by Pergamon Chess in 1991, offered a distinctive and personal perspective on chess through his own games. It has since become a classic, with a new edition released by New In Chess in 2016.
