1) Introduction

My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Holger Lieske, Gregory Joseph, Aleksandar Savanovic, and everyone else who helped with this issue.

The European Team Championships reach their conclusion tonmorrow, Azerbaijan (13) - Serbia (11), Ukraine (13) - England (11) and Germany (10) - Netherlands (11) are the pairings that will settle the medals in the open section, Poland (14) - Azerbaijan (10), Armenia (11) - Ukraine (13) and Germany (13) - Bulgarian (10) will settle the medals in the women's event. It's been great. The US Chess Championships started yesterday, they've really done a great job in raising the stature of the event and the mixed strength fields make it one of the most interesting tournaments of the year. As I mentioned last week in this introduction, at the last minute I found out the Russian Championships were under way, it finished this week with 22 year old Arseniy Nesterov winning the open section and Anna Shukhman the women's. The Russians have their rapid and blitz individual and team events coming up in Sochi (I always thought this very odd, essentially the same event run twice back to back with the results counting once for individuals and once for teams). Garry Kasparov won a strange match against Viswanathan Anand in Chess960 and Clutch chess, Anand has a lousy career score against Kasparov and that still seems to affect him today. Kasparov said he didn't have very high hopes for a good result in the match and put his win down to "Ghosts of past" weighing on Anand and that seems right to me. The strangest moment came when Anand obtained a big advantage in the first game of day two and also had an edge on the clock and then completely lost track of the time and his flag fell.

The 25th European Team championships take place in Batumi, Georgia 5th to 14th October 2025. Leading players such as Anish Giri, Vincent Keymer, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Richard Rapport, the field has 56 players over 2600. In the women's event the leading players are Nana Dzagnidze, Nino Batsiashvili, Alexandra Kosteniuk etc.

4) 78th ch-RUS 2025

The 78th Russian Chess Championship and 75th Russian Women's Championship took place in Moscow 1st to 12th October 2025. The event was pretty weak compared to even the relatively recent past due to the war. Daniil Dubov, Vladislav Artemiev, Andrey Esipenko and Vladimir Malakhov were the top seeds but there were some young players too. Polina Shuvalova, Leya Garifullina, Olga Girya, Valentina Gunina and Alisa Galliamova were the leading women's players. 22 year old Arseniy Nesterov won the title for the first time with 6.5/11 half a point clear of Daniil Dubov, Andrey Esipenko and Vadim Zvjaginsev. Anna Shukhman won the women's event with 7/10 half a point clear of Leya Garifullina (who she beat in the final round in the first game to finish) and Daria Charochkina. Alisa Galliamova had to withdrew due to health reasons at around the half way stage and her results were annulled.

5) Clutch Chess: The Legends 2025

Clutch Chess: The Legends was a match between Viswanathan Anand and Gary Kasparov in Saint Louis 8th to 10th October. Kasparov won the match 13-11 but this score rather flatters Anand who won the final two games after the match was already decided.

Format

Given the stature of the players, a straightforward format might have served better, but instead, the event featured a rather convoluted structure.

It was a Chess960 match (randomized starting positions)
Each day included two rapid and two blitz games
And it followed the Clutch Chess scoring system

Rapid Games: Games 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, and 10 — time control G/25 +10 seconds increment
Blitz Games: Games 3, 4, 7, 8, 11, and 12 — time control G/5 +3 seconds increment

Clutch Scoring

Day 1: Win = 1 point, Draw = 0.5 points
Day 2: Win = 2 points, Draw = 1 point
Day 3: Win = 3 points, Draw = 1.5 points

The idea behind Clutch Chess is to keep the match competitive until the very end. But ironically, for the format to work, it almost requires a travesty of a final result.

Match Summary

Kasparov beat Anand 13–11.

Day 1: Anand blundered in a drawn endgame; the remaining games were drawn.
Day 2: Anand lost on time in a winning position after losing track of time, then dropped a disastrous blitz game two games later.
Day 3: Anand still had a chance to take the match by winning two games and avoiding defeat on the final day. However, he lost the second game of the day, which ended the match as a contest, before rallying to win the final two blitz games.

Final Thoughts

It’s hard not to recall the 1992 Fischer–Spassky rematch, which drew criticism despite being quite enjoyable. In contrast, the quality of play in this match was unexpectedly poor given the legendary status of both players.
