1) Introduction

My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Holger Lieske, Gregory Joseph, David Llada, and everyone else who helped with this issue.

The Grand Chess Tour had an exciting finish with Maxime Vachier-Lagrave snatching defeat from the jaws of victory against Fabiano Caruana. He led going into the blitz, not normally regarded as Caruana's forte, and lost three games in a row, even then a win in the final blitz game would have leveled things up but he missed his chance there. The European Team Championship should be a tremendous event with many, many strong players and closely matched teams. There also the World Youth championship, with so many talented juniors at the moment this is sure to be interesting. Plenty of other chess to look at elsewhere but these are my highlights.

It seems I missed the Russian Superfinal has started. Will cover that next week although it's clearly nowhere near as strong as it used to be. Russian Superfinal information and now added a page of my own TWIC Russian Championship page 2025

The Doctor

2) GCT Finals 2025

The Grand Chess Tour Finals took place in Sao Paulo Sunday 28th to Friday 3rd October. Players: Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Praggnanandhaa, Levon Aronian and Fabiano Caruana. This is a knockout where they play a mix of Classical, rapid and blitz. Classical Games: 6 points for a win, 3 points for a draw and 0 points for a loss, Rapid Games: 4 points for a win, 2 points for a draw and 0 points for a loss, Blitz Games: 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss. Fabiano Caruana beat MVL in the final but only after coming from behind winning three blitz games in a row and then surviving a lost position in the fourth. Levon Aronian qualified for next year's tour beating Praggnanandhaa heavily in the 3rd-4th playoff.

I remember seeing Murshed (and Anand) play in the British Chess Championships in Blackpool in 1988 where he was a leader at one point. I didn't realise we're almost the same age, he's just three days older than me.

The 23rd European Senior Championships took place 27th September to 5th October 2025. Jean-Marc Degraeve won the over 50s with 7/9. Zurab Sturua edged out John Nunn on tie-break after both scored 7/9 in the over 65s. Gundula Heinatz won the women's over 50s on tie-break from Margit Brokko and Jicman, Ligia-Letitia won the women's over 65s with 5.5/7 (I don't think there are any games from this section).
