My thanks to Sinisa Joksic, London Chess Centre, Gregory Belmont, Lothar Karrer, Shahcom, Marius and Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk, Europe Echecs Magazine, Roland Wimmer, Bernard Sojka, John Saunders and the 4NCL pages, Stefan Muellenbruck, Petr Novak, Jacob Shutzman, Gerhard Hund, Dadi Jonsson and his Chess in Iceland page, Laszlo Nagy, Gerald Schendel, and all those who helped with this issue.
A busy issue with numerous events from throughout the World. However it is the mouthwatering prospect of the Category 18 event in Belgrade which starts tomorrow which dominates my thoughts. The 1995 event was such a fantastic event full of great fighting chess and looking at the field this year it promises to be the same. Anand, Kramnik, Ivanchuk, Shirov, Gelfand, Beliavsky, Kiril Georgiev, Lautier, Ljubojevic and Kovacevic seems like the kind of mix of players that may very well do the trick this time aswell.
Hope you enjoy this issue
Mark
In November 1995 there took place one of my all time favourite tournaments. Kramnik and Gelfand took first in one of the most spirited tournaments of recent years. Fantastic creative chess with all the players contributing to a great event. Many of the same players return for the 6th event which starts on Tuesday 10th November 1997. We can only hope for an event even half as good.
The 6th "Investbanka" Super Tournament will be from November 11.- 21. With five players over 2700 and one international master among 10 players. Investbanka will be cat 18 (2678,5). Vladimir Kramnik (2770), Vizwanathan Anand (2765), Vassily Ivanchuk (2725), Alexander Beliavsky (2710), Alexei Shirov (2700), Boris Gelfand (2695), Kiril Georgiev (2670), Joel Lautier (2660), Ljubomir Ljubojevic (2565) and Aleksandar Kovacevic (2525) play. My thanks to Sinisa Joksic. Full coverage on my pages. There is also a www site:

Garry Kasparov was in England this week giving a couple of chess exhibitions. These events replace events in Edinburgh that were initially planned but fell through. Kasparov visited Oakham School in Rutland to launch a chess scholarship by the school which will see a young player of Kasparov's nomination get the opportunity for schooling at Oakham which has a full time chess coach, Graham Lee.
Kasparov made light work of the six players in the clock simul with Harriet Hunt lasting the longest. Further details at:
The following day he took on a stronger field in an exhibition for the Fragile X Charity in London at the Cobden Club. He played both individuals and a number of teams of opponents. He conceeded draws to BCF Girls Junior squad Rosalind Kieren, Claire Thrower, Jo Hart and Melanie Buckley. Daniel Johnson of the Times also got a draw as did the BCF Boys squad consisting of Richard Palliser, David Hodge, Edmund Player and Desmond Tan. Kasparov played 29 moves against a player from the internet. He refused to continue after 29 moves because he believed he was in fact playing an opponent being aided by a computer.
Here is what Gregory Belmont of ICC has to say about it.
One of the games Kasparov played this weekend against ICC has been clouded in some controversy over claims by Kasparov that either the team was stronger than he was lead to believe or that the team was being assisted by a computer. While the team clearly played better than Kasparov expected from an informal charity affair staged amongst coffee tables in a socialable setting, ICC is confident that no computer assistance was rendered and that its team members are not master strenth. The event organizer asked us to limit our team members to those whose over-the-board ELO rating is below 2000. While two of the memebers do not have "official" ELO ratings, we made the judgement that there strength is at the requested limit. This being said, it is possible that one member in particular could play closer to 2200 in tournament competition. In any event, it is not surprising that ICC, the largest and strongest chess club in the World, could field a team that is so well coordinated as to play with effect of being far stronger than its individual members. ICC has conducted an investigation of this game and feels that its team was not cheating for the following reasons: the team's online conversation was monitored by an independent witness and the independent experts that have reviewed the game with computers report that some of the team's moves were never selected by any computer program at any feasible search-depth. As for the game itself, it appears Kasparov played a topical opening that has been very popular lately-- the bayonet attack in the Kings Indian defense. Unfortunately for him, one of the ICC team members plays that opening and another had recently studied the New In Chess section on it by Rogozenko (NIC 41 - KI 5.2). The Team's first 13 moves were all frequently played although, checking the games there, never in precisely this combination and/or order. From that point on, it is reasonable to assume that all the moves are justified by reasoning that can be seen by 2000 level players.
36 gms 37 ims played in the field of 154 that was the Chigorin Memorial held 1st-9th November 1997 in St. Petersburg. The events was also the first event of this seasons Russian Cup Grand Prix. Konstantin Sakaev with a performance of 2781 took the event by a full point scoring 7.5/9. His games were tactically and strategically complicated, for instance his game against Sveshnikov was very interesting who was one of the players in the chasing group. The two 2600+ players Yudasin and Fedorov finished on 6/9 undefeated but unable to generate the necessary number of wins.

The 4th Villa Martelli International in Argentina finished on November 9th. Maxim Sorokin took first place in a strong field on tie break from Andres Rodriguez both on 7.5/9. The event was the third one of this years Clarin Grand Prix and was stronger than the Mercosul Itaú Cup (http://www.xadreznet.com/itaumercosul/) which just preceeded it . 6gms and 19ims played. My thanks to Marius and Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk for the games and results they send a short report.
Grandmaster Maxim Sorokin was the big winner from the International Open Tournament of Villa Martelli. The tournament ended yesterday night at that town which is part of the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires. Sorokin had a better Bucholz score. Andrés Rodríguez, who was the sole leader until then, didn't take any risk and drew quickly against Sergio Slipak. The latter performed a technical gm result. Alejandro Hoffman, winner of the tournament in 1996, drew in the last round against Brazilian Giovanni Vescovi and finished fourth. Giovanni had the same number of points and ended on place 8. Big deceptions were Grandmasters Hugo Spangenberg and Pablo Zarnicki who lost in the last round. Zarnicki didn't see a nice forced mate in eight moves (44 Rh8+ Kxh8 45 Rh2+ Kg8 46 Rh8+ Kxh8 47 Qh3+ Kg8 48 Qxe6+ Kh8 49 Qc8+ Bf8 50 Qh3+ Kg8 51 Qh7++) against Pablo German and after that lost.

Europe Echecs reports the games and results from the Bourban Lancy French Open. This open was the first since the Yerevan olympiad to gather Etienne Bacrot, youngest GM ever and Joel Lautier, best French player. Bacrot played a off hand game with French film director Jose Giovanni (he made lots of films with Belmondo, Delon, Gabin, Ventura in the 70's). Bacrot won this friendly game with Black. M. Giovanni, one of the most famous French film director, started to play in prison where he stayed 10 years or so after being condemned to death penalty. After the prison, he wrote scenarios and became famous in lots of scenarios & detective films.
Joel Lautier was unofficial guest star as he accompanied his wife, the woman GM Almira Skripchenko, to whom he married at the end of september. Bourbon Lancy is in the center of France and intend to organize big chess events in the next few years.

The 1997 Bundesliga saw its third and fourth rounds over the weekend of 8-9th November 1997. Solingen and Porz are the favourites and both maintained their 100% records this weekend. Glancing through the individual results the most interesting results involving the top players include: Shirov 0-1 Krasenkow 0-1, Epishin 0-1 Sax, Hodgson 0-1 Votava, Epishin 0-1 Lutz, Movsesian 0-1 Sax.
The games section includes some games from the first two rounds including Adams win against Shirov, Jussupow's very strange win against Almasi and an extremely aesthetic finish by Cvitan against Fracnik.

An appeals committee of Mr. G. Gijssen (chairman), Mr. A. Filipowicz and Mr. D. Wallace reversed the decision to award the game between A. Summerscale (Slough) v. A. Felsberger (Merkur Graz) to Summerscale by Arbiter Bob Wade.
The decision criticises the absence of an appeals committee to deal with the appeal at the time of the match. In the second part of the decision it banned Peter Detter from serving as captain in the final of 1997 and for one more season of the European Club Cup. [It was his actions which lead to the initial decision of Bob Wade to award the game to Summerscale in spite of the winning position that A. Felsberger had]
The result of the appeal means that Merkur Graz qualify to play in the final in Kazan November 28th to 30th. There are some worries about the number of teams that will attend the event because Kazan (in Russia) is approximately 500 miles to the east of Moscow. Indeed Hellir Chess Club has confirmed that if the finals take place in Kazan they will not participate. The main reason is lack of funds, but also the players have expressed concerns about going there. Internal flights in Russia, fear of food poisoning, poor accommodation etc. have been mentioned by the players. Lothar Karrer who sent the result of the appeal to me also reported that Graz tried to raise the possibility of getting the venue changed to a city like Moscow or Lenningrad.

Huebner had in every game white pieces, but the spectators still believed it would be a close struggle some suggesting a draw would be excellent result for the gm. The players were in a closed room and the moves were transmitted to the audience outside. The result exceeded all expectations with Huebner running away with it 5.5 - 0.5. He played quickly and solidly without losing track of any of the positions. The whole event took five hours.
