My thanks to TASC, Dadi Jonsson and his Chess in Iceland page, Janos Tompa, Laszlo Nagy, Luis Santos, Chess in Portugal, Gerald Schendel, Russian Chess www page, Jakub Fuksik of Agentura 64, George Mastrokoukos, Gerhard Hund, Roberto Alvarez, Shay Bushinsky, and all those who helped with this issue.
The 4th World team Championships were concluded in Switzerland this weekend with the victory of the Russian team. Some excellent competitive chess proved very enjoyable. I have to feel sorry for the US team who came within half a point of retaining their title and whose team played as a team to the maximum that could have been expected.
Elsewhere the World Micro-Computer Chess Championship saw long time friend of twic's Shay Bushinsky's (along with the founder of the project Amir Ban) program Junior take a deserved first place. Computer Chess is not an area of expertese for me so I hope that the comments made are appropriate.
My thanks to those who wrote after the technical problems of last week.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The World Team Championships were won by favourites Russia but only after a big effort in inflicting the only whitewash of the event on the Georgian women. Reigning champions US came close to taking the title. They lead by half a point going into the final round, and they had a superior tie-break. Two quick draws with black were backed up with two wins with the white pieces. This did not prove to be enough in the end. Third place was taken by Armenia whose excellent result was secured by a win over their rivals England in the final round. Smbat Lputian scored the only win of the match and became the top scorer in the event as a whole with 7/9. Armenia's final round result could have been better as Julian Hodgson was given a draw in a lost position simply to secure Armenia their desired match result. England will be disappointed with their 4th place. Sponsorship has allowed England to field full sides in recent years in important event. Matthew Sadler and Jon Speelman scored above their ratings, Short and Adams around their ratings but Nunn and Hodgson performed well below. Its worth noting that only Alexei Dreev performed below his rating in the strong Russian team and the US team all overperformed, with Grigory Kaidanov's 5/6 and Larry Christiansen's 5/7 in the starring roles. Two other exceptional results were those of Vassily Ivanchuk on top board for the Ukraine with 6/8 and Murtas Kazhgaleyev with 6/9 for the Kazakhstan team. Elsewhere the hosts have hope for the future with the performances of youngsters Pelletier and Forster they backed up Victor the Terrible on board 1 (actually Victor the Not So Terrible in this event as he drew all his games).
Games. Apart from his three short draws against Korchnoi, Svidler and Short Vassily Ivanchuk's games were full of content and were of a very high class. Lputian's win against Sadler was his finest achievement of the event, Sadler himself played with theoretical sharpness which gives most of his games great interest. Peter Svidler's games again showed the vast range of openings he has. His only loss was to Joel Benjamin when he appeared to blunder the entire position around time control. Svidler's games from rounds 1, 2 and 9 are of especial interest. With every point counting there was a lot of fighting chess.

Zoltan Almasi took the Hungarian Superchampionships by a clear point from Alexander Chernin and Peter Leko. The second half of the event saw only one decisive game and that proved to be the game which decided that championships. When Zoltan Almasi won against Peter Leko in round 8 he needed just one draw in his final game to become champion. The game started quietly enough with a Berlin Defence to the Ruy Lopez. Leko tried to take advantage of his advantage in development. The key point came at move 15. After the game 15. Nf6 was seen as too ambitious. Instead of that 15. Nd6 is probably equal. Almasi won a pawn and after some difficulties he won. In the other round 8 game Chernin had better position against Pinter but he is always in time trouble at the critical moments He played very well till the 57th move. Then he made an unbelievable mistake. He could win easily with 57. g5. Pinter found a nice defence and finally drew. This he achieved without undue alarm. The Championships became very cautious once Lajos Portisch withdrew after round two and once can't help feeling that this pretty much spoiled the event.
My thanks to Janos Tompa for the games and results.
The main sponsors of the event were HUNGAROPHARMA Medicament Commercial Company and the Hotel HILTON Budapest which is the venue of the event as well. The prize fund was 4 million Hungarian Forints (appr. 20250 US Dollars) and the 1st prize is 1,25 million Hungarian Forints. The tournament started on the 21st October and finished on 31st October.

The World Micro-computer Chess Championships took place in the Palais de la Bourse, Paris. The event was won by Junior an Israeli program written by Amir Ban and Shay Bushinsky. Junior played most of its closest rivals and scored 9.5/11 which included one loss! Their first four rounds were played on a slower K6-200 machine before moving up to a K6-300. The nearest rival was the French program Virtual Chess 2. The program Junior was started 10 years ago. Amir Ban was there at the start and then six years ago Shay Bushinsky joined in its development. The developers are professional software programmers who work on Junior in their spare time. Junior will be available as an engine for Fritz 5 (along with Virtual Chess II , Mchess Pro 7.0, Shredder II, Nimzo 98 (Hydra) ) shortly.
Junior has played in a number of other events over the years. This includes, until recently, the Israeli league before objections to their participation ruled them out. Their previous best result in computer events was a third place in the Hong-Kong Computer World championships May 1995 shared with Deep Blue prototype running on Pentium 90 Mhz. Shay Bushinsky has been an active organiser and in the Nir-Galim rapid tournament Nov. 1995 he organised a strong blitz event. Junior playing on a Pentium 90 Mhz shared third place behind Leonid Yudasin and Judit Polgar. The computer also lost a match to Judit Polgar 4-2 in Budapest April 1996. It also finished 4th in the Kfar-Saba open 1997 at a standard time rate.
The championships will very probably undergo a number of changes in the near future. There were a number of strong programs not present at these championships. Rebel, Hiarcs, TheKing and Genuis did not play and last year a number of programs for various reasons also did not participate (some did not like the host countries human rights record, others could not or would not travel there). Problems such as large fees for professional programs, the concentration of some programmers in optimising their machines results against human opposition have all created a barrier for machines to compete. In addition the nature of the competition which is a Swiss means that the final standings especially in the minor placings are somewhat random, the same problem which has afflicted the Interzonals which were played under the same system. Robert Hyatt said after the event that he felt that there were a lot of very strong but closely match programs in the event this year. It was announced this week that the main man-machine tournament at AEGON will not continue. All in all computer chess as with over-the-board chess has some hard decisions to make about its future direction.
There were a number of different computer processors used in the Championships. Chris Whittington provided some approximate comparative figures for the different processors. Regulations as to the processors allowed are to be reviewed for next year.
If a P6 200 is rated at 1.0 then: P6 300 is 1.47 Alpha 500 is 1.5 and an Alpha 600 is 1.75.
