The FIDE Olympiad is well under way. It's been terrific so far with many great games and stories of interest. India lead both the open and women's events going into the only rest day. But if you can forgive me, that's not my main story of the day.
This is the 30th Anniversary issue of TWIC. The first issue was on Saturday 17th September 1994 and here we are 30 years later and I'm still standing. I think the quality of work I put in to produce the games section has never been higher and that its usefulness remains. This is my job, I survive on advertising and donations. When I wrote my article 1000 issues and a 20th year for TWIC I had just struck out on my own after over a decade of brilliant support from Malcolm Pein and Chess & Bridge, the money raised by that anniversary bailed me out and allowed me to continue (Also there was an article on the 25th Anniversary). Income gradually stabilised for a few years with some strong advertising support things were pretty fine. Now things feel up in the air again, I don't think anyone can predict where the game of chess is heading, since Covid-19 the game and the chess scene has undergone rapid change, that has not finished at all. I feel once again worried about my financial stability.
I was somewhat amused to read of my enthusiasm for Twitter in the 20th Anniversary article. I regard the giving away of free chess reporting on that platform one of my biggest errors in the last 10 years. I have plans to continue but this will be entirely contingent in being able to support myself on the money I make. I have had some reports that a number of chess business' rely on TWIC to update their own services, whilst there's little I can do about that, even if they don't consider fair play at all, actually supporting the service they rely on ought to be in their interests too.
I recently had to replace my main computer and it made a startling difference to the amount of time I needed to produce TWIC. I aim to use that time to improve the website. I did produce a new Archive Page which turned out rather nicely with the numbers of stories and games for each edition now available, along with links to every single text.
I've been feeling rather wistful today as 30 years is a long time to devote to anything. Anjo Anjewierden made very early contributions to TWIC that transformed the magazine, although we lost touch around 2008 I was still very upset to hear he passed away in 2020. Steven J. Edwards disappeared from the chess scene around the time I entered it, I did correspond with him in the very early years. He wrote the PGN standard and something called the SAN kit. He had some eccentric ideas, he believed you couldn't play and move and then resign, so his SAN kit cut off any moves that contradicted this theory. I wondered what happened to him and was upset to hear he too passed away, in 2016.
I have people who regularly write to me and send me news Olexandr Prohorov, Holger Lieske, Gregory Joseph and Ehud Lahav regularly appear, I miss Sinisa Joksic who also contributed much but many, many people send me news and stories, I thank them all. Martin Bennedik created the first chess viewer I used (Chesstempo now performs this necessary function) and his Daily Chess Puzzles still adorn the website. Malcolm Pein and the London Chess Center supported TWIC between 1997 and 2012 (and they continue to advertise), I simply couldn't have achived anything without this support, the agreement came to a natural end. New in Chess saved my bacon back in 2012 after I went out on my own, their advertising came in when I was in despair, since then Chess24, Chess.com, Chessable, Modern Chess and many others have been terribly important in keeping going. I also remember Bob Wade, the patron saint of TWIC, a man who collected and saved games in a different era but who it was a privilege to know. There are simply far too many names to remember.
I plan to continue, I hope to innovate once again, I believe I've contributed a lot. I do feel proud of my achievements, if I had to stop, I wouldn't have any reason to be ashamed of my contributions to the game of chess.

The 45th World Chess Olympiad takes place in Budapest Wed 11th Sep to Sun 22nd Sep 2024. The USA followed closely by India are the top two seeds. Then 3 China, Uzbekistan, Netherlands, Norway, and England. Russia are not playing due to their war with Ukraine. Leading players Carlsen, Caruana, Erigaisi, Abdusattorov, Gukesh, Wei Yi. India, Georgia, Poland and China are the top seeds in the women's events, should be pretty great.
