The FIDE Candidates and Women's Candidates are well under way in Toronto, Canada. What a treat it has been to see absolute top level chess again. This is what tells us the state of the game in 2024. Ian Nepomniachtchi has won the last two Candidates tournaments and leads with 3/4. He has skills other players don't have, is always well prepared, and is generally a heavy puncher. The downside of his game is that he sometimes plays too quickly. But even after four rounds he looks in good form and playing better than most if not all of his rivals. Someone needs to put him under pressure, because he will run away with this if they don't. The women's event is led by Tan Zhongyi, that also has been very enjoyable. Women's chess is often more relatable and their repertoires more nickable. The only downside, and it's really my problem, I've tried to stop the late nights, they don't agree with me, but the Candidates are in Toronto and I generally believe there's hardly any point to posting summaries many hours after a round has finished, so late finishes so far. Tomorrow I might have to wait until the morning as I have chess myself. As you might notice I've cut a few corners in this issue, mostly not updating event that have just started. I'm stretch mighty thin with the Candidates but I guess I wouldn't have it any other way, especially as the chess has been so rewarding to watch.

Round 1 is on Thursday 4th April and the final Round is Sunday 21st April with tie-breaks on the 22nd April if required. Play starts at 14:30 local time which is 19:30 BST. The winner will play Ding Liren in a match for the World Chess Championship later this year.

The Finnish Championship took place 29th March to 6th April 2024. Toivo Keinanen beat Mikael Agopov 2-0 in a rapid tie-break after both scored 7/9. I've assued the time control of the tie-break was 20 minutes plus 5 seconds a move, it might have been 4 seconds a move.
