My thanks to Lost Boys, John Henderson, Laszlo Nagy, Argiris Kotsis and the Greek Chess Federation, Chess in Iceland, Chess Assistant, Ian Rogers, Emmanuel Santosand all those who helped with this issue.
A lively final few rounds saw Kasparov, Kramnik and Svidler share first at the Fontys tournament. Tournaments in the Netherlands and Reykjavic are underway and the European Club Cup group 6 saw a very strong Russian team qualify.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The Tilburg tournament which concluded on Thursday saw a three way tie for first place. Gary Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik were the pre-event favourites, both performed at or above their own rating and were impressive in different ways. They were joined by the surprise package of the tournament, Peter Svidler.
Gary Kasparov looked likely to run away with the tournament. He started with 5.5/6 and was a little unlucky not to win against Onischuk also. His finely judged play against Shirov and his powerful understanding of his own opening repertoire against Leko were especially impressive. Only when he became over-ambitious against Peter Svidler did the wheels come off his tournament. That loss was followed by a crushing win against Jeroen Piket, another tribute to his opening knowledge. He then responded badly against another sideline in the Sicilian (Svidler avoided main-line also) and should probably have lost against Michael Adams who instead allowed 3 fold repetition. In the eagerly anticipated game against Vladimir Kramnik he outplayed his young rival in a Nimzo-Indian, he later claimed he was winning, before losing track of the position and allowing an easy draw. In the final round he survived a dodgy opening against Joel Lautier and agreed a draw in a simplified position. However Lautier's final move which accompanied the draw was a bad error which should have allowed Kasparov a big opportunity to try and win. He had already mentally attuned to the idea that the game was a draw. This allowed his opponents to catch up. A good performances which Kasparov believes could have been a lot better. The worrying thing for Kasparov was precisely the fact that he missed so many good opportunities, his result being almost entirely dependent on his huge command of his opening repertoire. Elsewhere he was probably a little ordinary looking like he lacked motivation once he lost a game.
I was most impressed by Kramnik's play in the tournament. He is developing as a well rounded positional player in the style perhaps most similar to Botvinnik. The modern "iron logician" played one classic game in the event, a game on the theme of the bad bishop against Joel Lautier in round 5. His finely judged games against Shirov (a theoretical battle) and Van Wely in the last round are also worthy of mention. Elsewhere he was frustrated by a number of players in games full of content, Adams, Polgar and especially Leko managed to hold games where he pressed simply by continuing to play, Piket was not so lucky and in the end could not solve the problems presented. His muscular positional play is very clear and is a joy to watch.
The most outstanding result of the Tilburg tournament was that obtained by 21 year old Peter Svidler. This result should lead on to more invitations. It also wipes out memories of his very average performance in this tournament last year (=9 -2). If Svidler was a western player he would have attracted far more attention by now. He has won the Russian Championships 3 times in the last 4 years (only missing last year when I believe it clashed with the Tilburg event) and that should have lead to more opportunities already. Part of the problem is that he is super-competent at many things rather than eye-catching in any particular part of his game. He has a wide repertoire, with black he played the Queens Gambit Accepted, Gruenfeld and Kings Indian Defence against d4 and couple of different variations within his Sicilian defence against e4. As white he plays 1.e4 but again varied the specific variations, including avoiding the main lines against Kasparov. He also started the tournament quietly, a draw from a better position against Leko, a win against Jeroen Piket where he gradually took the initiative and saw Piket self destruct in time trouble (Piket's score in the whole event was severely affected by his capacity to blunder and get short of time) a safe draw against Kramnik, a draw from a favourable position against Van Wely, and a win against Tal Shaked which arrived quite late in the game. He then played the two games that really made his tournament. He beat Alexei Shirov with black in the Paulson variation of the Sicilian in his finest game so far of the event. Against Kasparov he chose a sideline which gave the World number one the option of a safe draw or extreme risk to try to win. Kasparov who was on a roll in the tournament chose risk and paid for it, although he claims he had at least a draw later in the game. Then three draws and the impression from observers that he was tiring were rounded off with a win against Onischukin the final round, whose aggression left him with little alternative but to play for a win. That took him to joint first place.
Its dangerous on the evidence of just one tournament to assess a player but he is an improving talent who needs more events of this type or stronger. He has had an up and down year, and still draws a lot of games. Nevertheless with more experience and a development of his chess style he could go far. His victory in the Russian Championships earlier in the year suggests he has a chance in the FIDE knockout event at the end of the year, it was held under the same format.
Michael Adams and Peter Leko both had excellent performances. Adams was undefeated (along with Svidler and Kramnik) and used his rather off-beat but increasingly sound opening repertoire to keep his opponents off balance. Leko only lost one game, a theoretical one to Kasparov, and should have lost another to Piket (another one move blunder) but nevertheless he has found a way to progress again after a time of slow improvement after becoming a Grandmaster.
All the other players lost rating points. Shirov rather lost the plot in the middle of the tournament, but nevertheless could have scored more (Adams had a close escape), losses to Kramnik, Svidler and possibly Judit Polgar were due to his willingness to enter highly critical theoretical lines. Lautier, Van Wely and Onischuk will have all enjoyed the challenges of this tournament and probably not worry overly about the loss of a few ratings points. Jeroen Piket had a bitterly disappointing event. Time trouble and huge blunders cost him at least two if not more points. Tal Shaked obtained some respectability in the end by drawing three of his last four games after losing his first 7 rounds. Apart from his US Championships appearance last year (where a similar thing happened at the end of the tournament that occurred at the start here) he lacked any experience of this company. His low rating (2500) compared to the rest of the field meant that the others would automatically seek wins against him, but his willingness to keep going and eventually start to draw suggest that he will be able to take something from the event.
Fontys should be congratulated on organising a fine event. One of the most interesting of the year so far.
The event is covered on the internet by Lost Boys.http://www.lostcity.nl/chess/fontys/default.html

The first VAM tournament is taking place in Hoogeveen in the Netherlands. It is a four player double round all-play-all event. 76 year old ex-World Champion Vassily Smyslov is joined by the 1996 World Junior champion Emil Sutovskij and two participants from the Tilburg tournament Loek Van Wely and Judit Polgar.
The tournament is played with glass chess pieces designed by Cees van Olst (my robust handling of the pieces makes this barely worth thinking about for me!).
According to the www page for the event "The FIDE has a number of special rules to determine the rating of a player. One of the rules is that if a player has participated in the candidates matches and is older than 55 his rating in a tournament is equal to the average rating of the opponents. For the VAM-tournament this means that the rating of Vassily Smyslov is 2638 (rather than his actual FIDE-rating of 2480)."
