My thanks to Matt Guthrie, Artur Zaremba, WDR Web site, Adjedrez Argentino, net64, Rune Djurhuus, Michael Atkins, Luis Santos, Eugeni K. Grigorian and all those who helped with this issue.
As some of you may have read on the main pages of twic The Week in Chess is now an independent production. Grandmaster Technologies has had a reorganisation and I no longer produce the magazine for them. My thanks to them for their support over the last year and their continued support in allowing me to remain on their www server as long as I need to. This does mean that I am looking for work, either chess, library or internet related. The Week in Chess will continue in one way or another whether part or full time. I spent some of the weekend looking at some options. I hope I can continue and get long term financial stability but time will tell.
This issue is a little shorter than intended but nevertheless there are a number of quality events including the US Championships and the emergence of a possible new star in the Rubinstein Memorial tournament.
Hope you enjoy this issue

Matt Guthrie reports that the 1997 US Men's and Women's Championships begin August 23rd at the San Marcos Hotel in Chandler, Arizona. The Women's Championship is a ten player round robin, but for the Men's event a slightly original format is being used:
The field is split into two groups of eight, each of which plays a round robin. The top two players from each group the advance, with the winner of each group playing a four game match against the runner-up of the other.
The winners of these matches then play a six game match for the title.
Round by round by Matt Guthrie
Round 3 25 Aug 1997
Original play and dramatic comebacks were the order of the day here in Chandler. Gurevich-Shabalov saw a very dynamic opening, with a benko/wing gambitesque 4.b4!? Yermolinsky played originally in the middle game, as his Knight danced from side to side, continually placing itself en prise on d4. Fedorowicz and Kaidanov were the comeback kids of the round, as both managed to win from markedly inferior positions, against Ivanov and Schwartzman respectively. Indeed, in the player's lounge after the game John was volubly demonstrating the weakness of his position in the early middle game. Christiansen posted a win on time against Zamora, and has surely moved into the driver's seat for qualification from his group to the next stage. Browne must again be a little disappointed, as for a while he had an extra pawn against Gulko.
The women's tournament saw two brevities today, with Jezierska and Frenklakh succumbing in short order. Gulko won nicely against Burtman, Khan eked out a win in a Bishop ending, and Shahade defended actively to hold a draw in a pawn down position against Krush.
Round 4 28 Aug 1997
Today saw extremes of both varieties in the length of the games. On the miniature end, Kaidanov dispatched Gurevich in a mere 20 moves , after the latter essayed the dubious 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 a6?! Kaidanov was proud of his 4.dxc5! explaining that this move is designed to reach positions where ...a6 is not a useful move. At the other end of the spectrum, three games went into the third time control, with Shabalov overcoming Kudrin in an ending where each side possessed a phalanx of passed pawns, Seirawan trading his Q for R+N+P in the early middle game and then pressing for many hours before finally falling on his sword in zeitnot at move 116, and, even longer, Benjamin playing R+B vs. R against Zamora. (See below) Browne picked up his first win of the tournament, while Christiansen & Fedorowicz were both unable to convert apparently superior positions against Gulko and Yermolinsky respectively. DeFirmian-Dzindzi was another unusual opening (3...Qd6 in the Scandinavian) and a double-edged middlegame petered out into an even Queen endgame.
Controversy erupted in the last game to conclude, Benjamin-Zamora, in which Joel's 70th move removed Jorge's last pawn, setting up the infamous R+B vs. R ending. Jorge rapidly ate into his last hour (tertiary control SD/1) and stopped keeping score. Eventually he made a claim for a draw on what was determined to be his 119th move, 50 moves for him, but only 49 for White, therefore 1 ply short of a successful claim. The game resumed and his flag fell after a couple of subsequent moves, but without him making a second claim.
After an in depth review of the new FIDE rulebook arbiters Jarecki and Tanner determined that absent any rule specifically addressing the situation, analogous situations allowed them to rule the game a draw absent a claim, and that subsequent flagfall did not alter this. To his credit GM Benjamin accepted this ruling without demur.
All five women's games were decisive, with Jezierska and Belakovskaia both winning nice sacrificial games. With todays wins, Esther Epstein and Anna Gulko both have 3.5/4 (Analysis of Jezierska-Krush will be available on the USCF web page.)
Round 5 28 Aug 1997
In contrast to last night's marathons, only a handful of games today reached even into the fifth hour. However all were extremely hard fought.
Benjamin played elegantly as Black against Gulko, daring 8...g5!? in a reversed Sicilian, and winning in fine style, Seirawan rapidly dispatched Gurevich, who has clearly had much better tournaments. Shabalov-DeFirmian was a razor-sharp poisoned pawn Sicilian, in which Nick's cool defence eventually carried the day. "I was better in the early part of the game, but then it became very double-edged" opined the winner afterwards. Kaidanov and Kudrin drew a theoretical Open Lopez, Fedorowicz outplayed Zamora after a placid opening, Dzindzi showed his experience with a nice exchange sacrifice to keep his game with Schwartzman even, Christiansen took advantage of Browne's time trouble, and Yermolinsky won his first game, administering another dismantling of Ivanov's Queen's Indian.
The favorites in the Women's Championship continued to pull away from the field, as Gulko, Epstein and Belakovskaia all posted wins, with newcomer Shahade also winning to stay up with the leading pack.
Round 6 (Women) Fri, 29 Aug 1997 22:10:48 -0700
The women took centr stage at the US Championships today while the men enjoyed an off day. The first two games to finish were both entertaining draws. Shahade-Epstein is annotated on the USCF web page, and Khan-Belakovskaia ended with the unusual material balance of Q vs. R+4P. Burtman recorded her first win of the tournament, while Gulko moved into clear first by beating Zitserman in a game in which no pawns were exchanged in 60 moves. Two of the youngest competitors, Krush and Frenklakh, closed out the day with a hard-fought draw.
Round 6 30 Aug 1997
The qualification for the semi-final stage took clearer shape as round 6 concluded this evening. The game Benjamin-Christiansen was a short, sharp draw. Afterwards Joel wondered if the whole game had been played before, although he stated that 13...Qc6 was new to him. Fedorowicz drew Gulko shortly after Benjamin (in the analysis room) had evaluated the position as better for White. Zamora scored his first full point, for a change being the recipient of a time-forfeit, courtesy of Ivanov, who will be happy to forget this tournament. Yermolinsky and Browne fought hard in an ultimately balanced position.
DeFirmian's chances to qualify were dealt a major blow by Schwarzman, who played an energetic game, with an elegant Rook sacrifice. Kaidanov stayed at +2 by drawing Shabalov from a position that he described afterward as "...lost, dead lost...". Gurevich and Dzindzi played a quick draw, and Seirawan ground down Kudrin in a minor piece ending.
Esther Epstein took the lead in the Women's Championship by beating Anna Gulko. Defending champ Belakovskaia kept pace with a win over Zitserman, Jezierska has asked me to say that the missed mate in her game against Frenklakh was the result of a frantic time scramble, and Burtman drew Shahade. Krush-Khan was postponed due to Anna's illness.
Round 7 31 Aug 1997
The first stage of the men's championship drew to a close today, and the fate of the four qualifying spots was determined. Larry Christiansen was the first to clinch his semi-final place, using the Exchange variation of the Classical King's Indian to obtain a draw with Fedorowicz. Kaidanov soon joined him when he defused DeFirmian's Benoni and offered a draw in a superior position. The third spot was claimed by Seirawan, who averted a multi-player playoff by winning a superb defensive game against Shabalov. Benjamin made the most of his chances in a Q+N ending against Browne and garnered the last semi-final place. Among the others, special mention should be made of Schwartzman, who capped his comeback from a disasterous .5/3 start by drawing Gurevich and breaking even.
Women's leader Epstein drew quickly with Belakovskaia, allowing Gulko to take a share of the lead by beating Shahade. Khan arose from her sickbed to beat Jezierska, and Frenklakh was particularly unfortunate, as she flagged while making move 40 against Burtman.

Vladimir Kramnik won the 1997 WDR TV exhibition game. The event has run since 1983 with a winner stays on rule at least in recent years. Kramnik had to win the game as white in order to be invited back next year. Last year he drew as black against Anand. The game was broadcast on WDR on August 31st at 23-30 to 01-30. Kramnik played a fine positional game and Polgar resigned in a completely hopeless position on move 40.
