2) Michael Adams and Matthew Sadler 1st= at the British

The strongest British Chess Championships in many years took place in Hove England from August 4th-15th. The good turnout was ensured by Smith & Williamson the new sponsors of the event. In the final round there were two leaders, Tony Miles and Matthew Sadler. They drew a very brief game guaranteeing them at least 4500 pounds. First prize alone was 10,000 pounds. The consequences of a loss would have left them only with a few hundred. Michael Adams after winning his first four games before had a ling drawing sequence in rounds 5-10. He managed to win his final round game to get into a playoff. John Emms also managed to get into the speed playoff via a win in the final round. The four players contested a single round robin event of 15 minute with 10 seconds increment chess. The result was rather unsatisfactory as the two top finishers had two whites and one black and the others had two blacks and one white, leaving one wondering what the result would have been if it had been the other way round. The play-offs were further devalued when the two winners of this speed event didn't want to have a final playoff to decide the title which leads to the question, why did they bother having one at all? Food for thought next year. However the championships were the best in many years and the close finish reflected this. My thanks to those who produced the fine and informative web site. They did seem to be somewhat limited in the number of games they could give so that it did not clash with sales of the bulletin. An issue that perhaps the BCF might address next year.

7) News from Hungary

Laszlo Nagy sends news from Hungary including from the August First Saturday event. He has produced another issue of his news (No11) from Hungary internet page which can be accessed at:

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/chess_first_saturday_hu/

First Saturday August

The August First Saturday GM event was a category VII event. IM Alex Mikhalevski of Israel scored his 2nd GM norm at the event. Laszlo Nagy sends the games and an interview from the event. The next First Saturday event will run from 6th-18th of September in Budapest.

Interview with IM Alexander Mikhalevski winner of the August First Saturday GM tournament.

1. When did you learn to play chess and who were your first chess teachers?

I was 4, my first teacher was my father. I learned a lot in Minsk from Boleslawski when I was a member of the Belorussian youth team.

2. Who are your idols in chess?

Jose Raoul Capablanca and Garry Kasparov. I like how actively the present world champion solves positional problems.

3. When did you move to Israel?

I moved to Israel in 1991. At first I lived in Hod-Hasharon where I took a Hebrew language course and then the world famous chess organizer, Eliyahu Levant invited me to be a chess trainer and Beer-Sheva team member. The city is a real center of chess, there are 8 GM player lives there now.

4. How often do you play?

I regard myself as basically a chess trainer, so I have not too much time to play, only during the school holidays.

5. What are your GM-norm performances?

From 1992 Biel in the Open tournament 3rd place from 11 games, now from the FIRST SATURDAY tournament 1997 August in Budapest from 9 games. I will try to play in the FS tournament here in October or in December this year.

6. Who are your famous pupils of chess?

First of all my brother, Viktor (25), who is a GM and he has a 2535 rating now. Then IM Dmitri Tyomkin (20) who has a rating of about 2450, Yevgeny Rapoport (17) with a 2310 rating and Mikhail Kostanovich (16) with a rating of (2210).

7. What are you best results apart from the GM-norms?

Amsterdam 1995 2nd-5th place, Belorussian championship 1981 3rd place, Beer-Sheva, 1994 2nd place.

8. What is your opinion about Laszlo's Nagy'a new project, to bring the FIRST SATURDAY chess tournaments to Tel Aviv, to the Kasparov Chess Academy?

I think the project is principally possible and it would be for the benefit of the Israeli chess life. The project is possible if the organizer gets moral and other support from the leaders of the Israeli chess and political life. It would be good for young Israeli players to have the same chess tournament possibilities as the Hungarian chessplayers have now in Budapest.

9. Can you tell us something about your private life?

I am married, 39, my wife is also a newcomer to Israel. We are very happy there.

8) 1997 US Chess Championships

Matt Guthrie reports that the 1997 US Men's and Women's Championships begin August 23rd at the San Marcos Hotel in Chandler, Arizona. The Women's Championship is a ten player round robin, but for the Men's, a slightly original format is being used:

The field is split into two groups of eight, each of which plays a round robin. The top two players from each group the advance, with the winner of each group playing a four game match against the runner-up of the other.

The winners of these matches then play a six game match for the title.

The Groups are as follows:

Group A Category 12: GM Yermolinsky (2630), GM A.Ivanov (2600), GM Gulko (2590), GM Christiansen (2560), GM Benjamin (2555), GM Browne (2540), GM Fedorowicz (2510), NM Zamora (2390)

Group B Category 13: GM Seirawan (2630),GM Kaidanov (2590), GM D.Gurevich (2580), GM DeFirmian (2575), GM Shabalov (2555), GM Dzindzihashvili (2540), GM Kudrin (2515), GM Schwartzman (2510)

The Women's field is category 6:

WGM Belakovskaia (2365), WGM Gulko (2305), NM Krush (2245), WIM Epstein (2210), NM Khan (2190), NM Zitserman (2125), NM Frenklakh (2120), NM J.Shahade (2085), WFM Jezierska (2075) WIM Burtman (2070)

Note: Anna Gulko is the former Anna Akhsharumova, who now prefers to go by her married name.

FIDE Rules for their KO event

The new FIDE handbook published after the Cairo Executive Council Meeting in June contains the regulations for the Worldchampionship in Groningen, Elista and Lausanne.

Under 10 - Playing Conditions - (10.2 c):

The players' score sheets are the property of the players and FIDE, and FIDE has exclusive rights to publication.

Whether this is a normal condition to ensure that FIDE get all gamescores for their bulletins or an attempt to change the generally understood laws on copyright of games is not clear.

Deep Blue for the Bundesliga?

It is reported that the German Bundesliga club Turm Duisburg tried to recruit Deep Blue as its number one player for next season. Egon Ditt is reported to have appeared on TV in Germany to explain that computers would be rejected as possible players because of their violation amongst other things of reference material. I believe that Shay Bushinsky and Amir Ban's computer Junior was allowed special dispensation to play one year of Israeli league chess. That decision was reversed at the start of last season. The approach sounds like a publicity stunt as the Deep Blue project seems on indefinite hold according to IBM statements when the programmers claimed the Fredkin artificial intelligence prize recently. The leading figures connected with Deep Blue were reported to be moving on to more commercial projects.

In the final round Argentina and Kazakstan both won 3-1. The Champions beat Russia in round two and lost narrowly to Kazakstan in round 5, but outscored their rivals against the rest of the field.
