1) Introduction

My thanks to Gerald Schendel, Cecil Rosner, Ken Horne, Jack Peters, Antonio Bento, Laszlo Nagy, Lost Boys, World Junior www site, Lothar Karrer, the organisers of the Biel Chess Festival and all those who helped with this issue.

Exciting chess from Biel and the World Junior Championships form the basis of this issue. Tal Shaked's win in the World Junior Championships is a great achievement. The winners generally go on to be strong players, although not invariably so it will be interesting to follow his career from now on. Harriet Hunt's win in the women's event will come as no surprise to those Brits who have played her in the last few years. Perhaps she will be invited to play in the Veterans vs Ladies which concluded this week next year.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Biel Chess Festival

The Biel Chess Festival started 21st July with a bang. Anand playing a spectacular (but perhaps highly theoretical) game against Joel Lautier. There have been a lot of decisive games in the first week mostly because of the mixed strength of the players. Karpov and Anand lead after 7 rounds with 5 points each. Anand lost against Milov in the 7th round. A full roundup of games and results next week. My thanks to the organisers and tonight Lothar Karrer for information from the event.

3) Hostdans Veterans vs Ladies tournament

Veterans score a convincing victory

The Veterans scored a convincing victory over the ladies in this annual fixture by 27 points to 23. The Veterans have come back in the last couple of years and now they are level at 3-3 in the series hosted by the Association Max Euwe. The game scores stand at 183½ to 182½ over all competitions.

The teams tend to be closely matched and this has again produced an interesting event. Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant was the top women's scorer and needed a win in the final round against Spassky to secure a GM norm. However Spassky isn't the ideal player to have to win against and she lost for Spassky's only win in the event. The two teams were almost unchanged from last year's Foxtrot event in London with only one change with Zhu Chen coming in for Sofia Polgar. Portisch and Smyslov were top scorers last year with 6.5 points a very similar result to last year. Internet coverage was by Lost Boys at Lost Boys Site for Veterans v Ladies.

4) World Junior Championships in Zagan Poland

Tal Shaked and Harriet Hunt take the titles

The World Junior Championships took place in Zagan, Poland between 13th-27th July 1997. The event again showed the strength in depth in junior chess with the top seeds in both the men's and women's events being some way off the pace at the end. The boys's event was very close. Tal Shaked and Hristos Banikas were level going into the final rounds. Tal was black against Sergei Movsesian. He was offered a draw on move 14 but he had a difficult decision to make. A draw would produce a 4th and final GM norm Tal had been seeking. Also although the winner of the World Juniors gets a GM norm automatically if they were clear winners, it was not clear that a norm would be offered to a winner on tie-break. On the other top board there was an interesting situation. Mirumian had a better position against Banikas but an inferior tie-break to Tal also by winning Mirumian would score a GM norm so he did not lack motivation. After a thought of about half an hour Tal agreed a draw and had to await the result of the game. As it was Mirumian beat Banikas making Tal the winner of the title. Tal's second was John Watson who also worked with the US participant in the women's event. According to Tal's father Moshe his help was indispensable. One of the prizes for winning the event is a place in the FIDE World KO Championships in Groningen later in the year.

Things were also close in the women's event. Before the last round Harriet Hunt was clear leader by half a point. She had black against Anna Zatonskih of the Ukraine. Her victory on time just before the first time-control gave her guaranteed first place. Hunt has been an improving talent in England over recent years and her victory doesn't come as a total surprise. Top seed Corina Peptan scored 7/13.

The gamescores were produced very quickly day by day. However this led to a number of errors in the moves so the games should be treated with caution. Nevertheless I was very impressed with the professional nature with which the bulletin was compiled, often it takes hours to sort out the headers for the games (the players, adding round numbers etc) which were done exceptionally well in this bulletin.

The event was covered by an on-line website:

10) Julian Hodgson wins Canadian Open 1997 by Cecil Rosner

A record number of grandmasters to play in a Canadian tournament came to Winnipeg from July 12-20 to play in the Canadian Open Chess Championship.

In the spacious Winnipeg Convention Centre, they joined 180 others in a 10-round battle for $16,000 in prizes. When it was over, former British champion Julian Hodgson claimed sole possession of first place with a score of 8.5 out of 10. He earned $3,000 for his effort, and players began snapping up his new series of books on attacking in chess.

The pre-tournament favourite was U.S. grandmaster Alexander Shabalov, fresh from his victory at the World Open in Philadelphia. Shabalov showed up unannounced about an hour before registration closed, and immediately took his seat at top board with a rating of 2618. He played strong chess, but failed to take advantage of good positions in some of his encounters, and finished in a tie for third place a point behind the leader. Despite his performance, he said the tournament reminded him of a European-style event and provided good training for the upcoming U.S. championship

Canadian champion Kevin Spraggett, who had won the Canadian Open for the past two years, had a chance to make it three in a row in his last round game against Hodgson. Needing a win to overtake the leader, he achieved a superior game. But Hodgson found good resources, and Spraggett eventually offered a draw. That guaranteed him clear second place at 8 points and a prize of $1,500. While he admitted to some shaky play at the beginning,

Spraggett said he improved later on and was pleased with his final result. Lev Psakhis, a two-time Soviet champion who now lives in Israel, had a chance to tie for second place, as did Jakov Murey of Israel. But they agreed to a draw in the last round on Board 2, sharing third place with Shabalov, Cuban champion Reynaldo Vera, and Icelandic grandmasters Johann Hjartarson and Hannes Stefansson. Each player won $462.50.

The tournament was so tough that a number of high profile grandmasters and IM's found themselves out of the money. Jesus Noguieras of Cuba, one of the top players in the world during the 1980's, struggled to finish with 7 points. Ilya Smirin, formerly of Minsk and now Israel's top board at the Olympiad, also just managed 7 points, as did fellow Israeli grandmaster Leonid Gofshtein. Canadian IM's Deen Hergott and Bryon Nickoloff kept each other from winning money by drawing in the final round as well.

One of the most fascinating players to watch was Krishnan Sasikiran, the British Commonwealth Under-18 champion. Sasikiran, 16, travelled to North America specifically for the Canadian Open, and held his own against strong competition, scoring 7 points. A native of Madras, he is already the fourth highest rated player in India, and has his eye set on an eventual GM title.

11) News from the USA

Southern California Championship by Jack Peters

Cyrus Lakdawala of San Diego scored an undefeated 5.5-1.5 to win the 1997 Southern California Championship, the invitational state championship for the chess state of Southern California. The tournament, organized annually since 1989, is the only round robin run by the Southern California Chess Federation. This is the third state championship title for Lakdawala. He tied for first in the 1995 Southern California Open, and he achieved the best result in the history of the Southern California Championship when he scored 6.5-1.5 in the 1994 event.

Levon Altounian also went undefeated, but yielded four draws. Jack Peters needed a last-round victory to catch Lakdawala, but lost an exciting game against Andrey Krasnov. Both Krasnov and Valdis Saulespurens played very strongly against some of the prizewinners, and they lack only consistency to contend for first place.

Longtime master Stephen Jones had a fair performance, but he probably hoped for more after his 2-0 start. On the second weekend, he played three long, difficult endgames. Neither Ilya Sterin nor Charles Van Buskirk got many breaks. Sterin should have notched his first win in the final round against Jones, but erred in the second time control (40/120, then SD/60). Van Buskirk had Peters in serious trouble, and even rejected a drawing variation, but overlooked counterplay that turned the game around.

Mike Carr did an excellent job of running the tournament for the Southern California Chess Federation.

On June 7, 1997, during the first "Karlsruher Uni-Schau" (a public university show day), DarkThought played an exhibition match against the official student chess team from the University of Karlsruhe. While facing strong opposition by Steffen Birk (ELO 2305), Volker Duschek (ELO 2245), Boris Kargoll (ELO 2245), and Volker Klein (ELO 2225), DarkThought won the match 3.0 : 1.0 without loosing any of the four 60-moves-in-60-minutes games. The games are available at:

Ernst A. Heinz: " (...) This 'man vs. machine' event took place shortly after the 'IBM Deeper Blue vs. Garry Kasparov' rematch and drew a crowd of knowledgeable spectators who were fascinated by frequent high-quality play on all four boards. Interestingly, DarkThought ran on slower computers in the games it won than in the games it only drew! (...)"
