Just an amazing week where in the end I simply produced an issue with as much chess as possible in it. Biel started today but that will be covered on my www site starting tomorrow. The World Junior Championships will have to wait until next week when they finish. All squeezed out by the sheer quantity of games this week. Sorry to those whose events didn't make it this week.
Hope you enjoy this issue

Vadim Zvjaginsev won the12th Vidmar Memorial tournament. He finished the event undefeated however he won only three games. His most important win was against fellow leader Zdenko Kozul in the penultimate round. The event was very close with only Georg Mohr finishing with less than 50%. Alexander Beliavsky was the top rated player in the event but his two early losses to Kozul and Azmaiparashvili seemed to stop him getting going in this event.
The event was covered on the internet at: 12th Dr. Milan Vidmar memorial Tournament

The inaugural World Cities Championships took place in Jakarta between July 8th - 14th 1997. The event was not without its problems as Ignatius Leong, one of the prime movers behind the event, left FIDE due to disagreements with its President Kirsan Iljumzhinov. He has talked about setting up an international chess organisation and these Cities Chess Championships were caught in the middle of that.
On May 10th in a statement by FIDE Deputy President G. Makropoulos the position of FIDE was made clear.
"Our attention has been drawn to the recent announcement by Mr. Ignatius Leong of a so-called "Invitational World Cities Championship," and a joint publication by Messrs. Leong and Tam Kum-Foo, both International Arbiters of FIDE, of a proposed manifesto of a "World Chess Organization." FIDE always wishes to encourage organization of more chess events around the world. However, the above event is being used for political propaganda and we have been receiving inquiries from federations about this event. FIDE wishes to advise all national federations that for the moment, the "Invitational World Cities Championship," scheduled 7-14 July 1997, and the Gunadarma International Open, scheduled 15-23 July 1997, are events that are held outside the jurisdiction of FIDE. Regulations of FIDE events are approved by the FIDE General Assembly and as a matter of policy all federations should be invited, particularly to a "World" event. FIDE Statutes reject discriminatory treatment for national, political, racial, social or religious reasons.
We hope that the organizers and sponsors of these events will reconsider their goals and join the mainstream of chess activities in the world provided by FIDE and, in particular, successfully carried out in the region by the highly regarded Indonesian Chess Federation.
The proposed manifesto of a "World Chess Organization" aims to set up a parallel organization to FIDE, ostensibly on grounds of imagined widespread discontent on the state of affairs within FIDE. In previous announcements on the Internet, they have embarked on a campaign of calumny and unjustified attacks on FIDE and its officials, often times on the basis of hearsay and half truths.
The FIDE President has consistently called for unity in the world chess movement and invites federations, delegates, players, organizers, journalists and arbiters, including Messrs. Leong and Tam, to work together for our common goal and success in all important events. We, therefore, believe that any attempt to create a parallel organization to FIDE at this time is not in the best interest of chess.
At this crucial moment when FIDE is holding discussions on our future relationship with the IOC, we believe that we should all join hands to achieve true unity in the chess world.
Those who truly love the sport of chess and the progress of all chess players should genuinely work towards this goal. FIDE remains resolute in her efforts to conduct the 1997/98
World Championship and to increase the level of chess activities in both the developed and developing federations, through improved sponsorships, without getting unnecessarily distracted by political diversions.
Gens Una Sumus,
Georgios Makropoulos"
Whilst Leong both denied the accusation and demanded an apology FIDE appear to have continued very strongly to advise against attendence and to have had a measure of success in doing this.
Event spokesman Max Wotulo said
"I don't know what FIDE think they are doing, we are just trying to organise a new chess event."
The President of the Philippines Chess Federation, Arturo Borjal, confirmed that high level pressure had been exerted to prevent the top Filipino players from taking part in the Jakarta tournament. Speaking from Manila shortly before the event began, Borjal said "I don't know if this is sabotage or not, but the players told me that they had been warned by Campo [Filipino FIDE Chairman Florencio Campomanes] that if they played in the World Cities they would be banned from the FIDE World Teams Championship later this year."
The event itself was a battle between favourites Moscow, Donetsk of the Ukraine, Tashkent from Uzbekistan and perhaps Oslo also. In the second round there was already an indication that Moscow would struggle to win when they lost to Mandaluyung a team of lesser Filipino players. When they lost to Donetsk in round 6 it was clear that the Ukranian team were probably on their way to victory. There were three drawn games and the match was decided when Korneev lost on time. On seeing his flag fall he is said to have thrown the piece he was about to move onto the board and then stormed off.
The following round in a clearly pre-arranged match they drew 2-2 against Tashkent in only 18 minutes. This did not especially please their close rivals.
The cruised to victory over the final rounds having played all their strongest opponents. Donetsk took the first prize of $10,000. Moscow took second and $7,000 and Tashkent third and $5,000.
The 1998 World Cities Championships will be held in Singapore and provided war doesn't break out with FIDE it seems that this is a good idea that might very well take off.
My thanks to Ismet M.I. Muttaqien who showed extreme patience in providing the information I needed for the event.

I received a series of document files with almost all the games which I have converted into pgn. I probably needed to spend a few more days on the files but I found a lot of the rated players and hopefully made all the names consistant.

Laszlo Nagy has sent results and games of the First Saturday Tournament in July. The 28 year old Armenian chessplayer David Karatorossian (rated 2335) won the July IM First Saturday tournament. He needed a draw against the IM Gabor Pirisi in the final round to secure his first IM norm, something he achieved in a 70 move struggle. Karatorossian has lived in Hungary for 3 years. He is going to play next month in the August edition of the event to try and achieve a second norm. His favourite players are Armenian's Rafael Vaganian and Artashes Minasian.
The next First Saturday event will be from 2nd until 14th of August and in the GM and in the IM tournament there are some vacancies. If interested you should contact the organiser (see address below).

John Henderson has sent news and the games of the 104th Scottish Championships in Aviemore. The event was held in the Stakis Coylumbridge Hotel and finished on July 13th. The winner of the event was forty year old Douglas Bryson whose aggressive approach took him to 7/9 half a point clear of his closest rivals. Bryson didn't take up chess until the age of 18 and he became an IM at the age of 36. He has been playing Scottish Championships since 1981 but had to wait until last year for his first title. My thanks also to Steven Rix who also sent me the games.

The 1997 Irish champion is 28 year old Dubliner Joe Ryan who finally prevailed after an amazing nine round dogfight with former two times (91/92) champion Stephen Brady.
After drawing their individual game in round 2, Ryan and Brady each beat second seed Colm Daly in consecutive rounds before setting about the rest of the challengers. Up to the last day, both players had still dropped onlya half point.
In the final round on Sunday, Ryan beat Danny Roberts leaving Stephen Brady needing to match him for a share of the title. When, after six and a half hours of trying to convert a Q and opposite colour bishop ending a pawn up, Stephen let Tony Fox in for a perpetual check, the title went outright to Joe.
18 players took part in this year's championship. Notable absentees included Ireland's only IM Mark Orr, and norm holders Brian Kelly (ELO 2390)- concurrently representing Ireland at the World Juniors in Poland - Mark Quinn (ELO 2375) who returned from a year's studies in Italy during the event, and Conor O'Shaughnessy.
