1) Introduction

My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Holger Lieske, Gerard Demuydt, Diederik Oostindie, Dennis Monokroussos, Grant Oen, Robert Baskin and everyone else who helped with this issue.

Jorden Van Foreest won the 83rd Tata Steel Chess tournament. Van Foreest edged out his countryman Anish Giri in an Armageddon tie-break. While there's always a bit of luck inherent in these tie-breaks there was nothing at all lucky about Van Foreest's well prepared and solid performance. Van Foreest scored three wins on his debut in the top group in 2019 and also last year, this year he scored four. However he lost seven games in 2019, two last year and none this. It's been steady progress and was rewarded with this remarkable win. Anish Giri was somewhat unfortunate of course, in retrospect letting Alireza Firouzja off the hook in round 12 was the real decisive error - but it should be noted Alireza is a very tricky opponent and indeed he came close to tying for first on 8.5 points and he surely will win here at some point. Andrey Esipenko's joint third was also a fine performance. Fabiano Caruana was also quite close to getting in contention but just seemed slightly off his best. Magnus Carlsen was unsparing of his performance, +2 and 7.5 points was a lot better than this performance felt. Carlsen has had patches where his mood is spoiled and he struggles, perhaps turning 30 had a small effect, he will be looking to put this right as soon as possible. On Saturday there's another of the Champions Chess Tour online events (the Opera Euro Rapid) with a big field of stars - could he start there?

2) 83rd Tata Steel 2021

The 83rd Tata Steel tournament took place in Wijk aan Zee 15th January (16th Jan Round 1) to 31st January 2021. Jorden Van Foreest pulled off one of the great shocks in Tata Steel history in winning the 83rd event and becoming the first Dutch winner since Jan Timman in 1985. Van Foreest and Anish Giri drew the two blitz tie-break games, then there was a final Armageddon tie-break where Van Foreest had draw odds - he won on time in the end. As 11th seed Van Foreest was on no-one's list of potential winners but he was well prepared and solid.
