1) Introduction

My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Holger Lieske, Gunnar Bjornsson, Lennart Ootes and everyone else who helped both with this issue and throughout the year.

A mix of online and over the board chess finishes off the year. The second event of the online Champions Chess Tour is the Airthings Masters, the preliminary event saw Carlsen, So and Nakamura take the top three places - right now it seems these are the guys who shine online. Elsewhere the Sunway Sitges over the board event finished with a win for Ivan Cheparinov and in China they're holding a slightly weakened national championships. There was also the Levitov Christmas blitz tournament won by Alireza Firouzja beating Alexander Grischuk in the final and the Caplin British Online Championship is well under way and continues into the New Year.

I wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year. I really hope we can all play over the board chess again if we want to before too long. In the meantime stay safe and healthy.

2) Airthings Masters 2020

The Airthings Masters is the second event of the online Champions Chess Tour and takes place 26th December 2020 to 3rd January 2021. The event is one of three "Majors" on the tour which means the winner will qualify for the tour final. Players: Magnus Carlsen, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Hikaru Nakamura, Alexander Grischuk, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Levon Aronian, Daniil Dubov, Teimour Radjabov, Wesley So, Anish Giri, Pentala Harikrishna and David Anton Guijarro. An initial 12 player all-play-all qualifies the leading players for the final 8 player knockout phase.

11) 7th Sunway Sitges Festival 2020

The 7th Sunway Sitges Chess Festival took place over the board Sun 13th Dec to Wed 23th Dec 2020. Ivan Cheparinov took clear first with 8/10 - he scored a final round win over Matthieu Cornette while rivals Jules Moussard and Jaime Santos Latasa took a quick draw against each other. After the open finished there were blitz tie-breaks to determine the minor placings, Moussard finished second, Santos Latasa, third, Alexandr Fier fourth and Vladislav Nevednichy fifth, a second tie-break playoff meant Anton Korobov finished 6th, Nicholas Checa finished 7th and Karen Grigoryan 8th.

12) Levitov Chess Christmas Cup 2020

The Levitov Christmas Cup was a two-stage online tournament on Lichess. First there were 5 Swiss qualifiers on December 9th, 12th, 16th, 19th, and 23rd - I was sent a few games by the top finishers but it wasn't possible to add round numbers - if I hadn't been sent the games I wouldn't have touched these qualifiers as the result is not really very satisfactory to me. The Levitov Chess Christmas Cup finals took place 24th and 25th December 2020. 16 player knockout blitz tournament with a time control of 3 minutes + 2 seconds a move. Alireza Firouzja beat Alexander Grischuk 6-4 in the final. A lot of well known players competed, Levon Aronian and Boris Savchenko reached the semifinals, Alexander Morozevich and Vladimir Kramnik were beaten in the first round. The final games section is complete.

The Pavlodar Online Open took place on Lichess on December 26th. I had a player list but no list of nicknames - I went through the top finishers to produce a file of around half the games involving the stronger players. Vladislav Artemiev won with 9/10 a point and a half clear of Pavel Ponkratov on 7.5 points. Eltaj Safarli was top of a group of 6 players on 7 points.

17) FIDE Online World Cadets 2020

The FIDE Online World Cadets took place 19th to 24th December 2020. Nihal Sarin beat Shant Sargsyan 1.5-0.5 in the U18 final, sadly a player who reached the semi-finals was subsequently disqualified for cheating. Yip, Carissa won the U18 Girls, Frederik Svane won the U16 Boys and Ravi Rakshitta the U16 Girls. There were many other younger age group sections but I decided to cover only the strong older sections.
