1) Introduction

My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Holger Lieske, TJ, Jesse Richardson, Gerard Demuydt, Henri Koskinen Robert Baskin and everyone else who helped both with this issue.

The 8th Altibox Norway Chess has passed the half way stage and certainly has been showing us what we have been missing with elite classical chess. The leader is the youngest player Alireza Firouzja who has played just excellently. In second place in Magnus Carlsen who hasn't had things all his own way, he lost his first classical game in over two years to Jan-Krzysztof Duda - a run of 125 games undefeated. However he was bound to lose one at some point and was perhaps a little lucky not to have lost one earlier, his ambition and risk taking mean that losses are almost inevitable, an indeed this time he just lost his way in an extremely double edged position that was probably a bit harder for him to play. Carlsen was in trouble again today - this time against Fabiano Caruana but managed to hold the draw in the end. The Norway Chess format means that drawn games are followed by an Armageddon game for some of the points, I'm not convinced by this as a concept, the two games today saw four very tired players playing not very satisfying games that were eventually settled by flagfall, quite what this proves is anyone's guess.

2) 8th Altibox Norway Chess 2020

The 8th Altibox Norway Chess tournament takes place Mon 5th Oct to Fri 16th Oct 2020 in Stavanger, Norway. The 6 players have been isolated for the last few days in order to play this over the board event. Players Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Levon Aronian, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Alireza Firouzja and Arjan Tari. The event uses an unusual format in that there is three points for a win and if drawn there is a single Armageddon game where the winner gets 1.5 points and the loser 1 point.
