1) Introduction

My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Holger Lieske, Xuhao He, Peter Doggers, Gerard Demuydt, Dimitris Skyrianoglou and everyone else who helped both with this issue.

The Biel Chess Festival got under way on Saturday with a Chess960 rapid tournament won by Pentala Harikrishna. On Sunday the first part of the Grandmaster Triathlon of Rapid, Classical and Blitz all-play-alls took place. Radoslaw Wojtaszek won the rapid event. The Classical tournament starts tomorrow, today the spaced out open got underway. One of the most interesting experiments of he lockdown was the 4 player 6 round PNWCC Super Invitationals which were played at Classical time controls. Jeffery Xiong beat Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in the final round to win the stronger SOS event. M.amin Tabatabaei won the Rising stars event. If international travel is tricky for the next year this could be a way to organise top level classical chess. The experiments in Biel and the other over the board events featured this week is also an important part of the equation. Tomorrow the final qualifier for the final of the Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour takes place. This is the Legends of Chess event. They go back to a rapid match round robin format, these have been great so far so looking forward to it.

2) 53rd Biel Chess Festival 2020

The 53rd Biel Chess Festival takes place Sat 18th Jul 2020 to Wed 29th Jul 2020. This is the first major chess festival to take place since the coronavirus crisis. The main event is the Grandmaster Triathlon where the 8 players play at three time controls to decide the final result - Classical: 7 games, - Rapid: 7 games (reversed colors) - Blitz: 14 games (2-way). The players are: Pentala Harikrishna, Radoslaw Wojtaszek, David Anton Guijarro, Michael Adams, Saleh Salem, Romain Edouard, Noel Studer and Vincent Keymer. Alongside is not the normal GM open but just an amateur open with special measures to reduce contact between the players. It will be an interesting event to follow. The tournament kicks off with a Chess960 tournament on Saturday 18th July.

3) 33rd Leon Chess 2020

The 33rd Leon Chess tournament took place online due to the coronavirus crisis. The event started with a three day four player rapid tournament in the same format as has been held in recent years. Jaime Santos Latasa beat Alexei Shirov in the first semi-final on Friday, Leinier Dominguez Perez beat Parham Maghsoodloo in the second on Saturday and in the final on Sunday Dominguez dominated play although he in fact only won the third game which was enough to take the title. The Rapid Open followed by knockout for the top 8 was won by Pavel Ponkratov who beat Maksim Chigaev 2.5-0.5 in the final.

The PNWCC Super Invitational took place online Sun 12th Jul to Fri 17th Jul 2020 hosted on Chess.com. These are two standard time control tournaments of four players and six rounds.

5) FIDE Chess.com Women's Speed Chess 2020

The FIDE Chess.com Women's Speed Chess Championship took place 18th June to 20th July 2020. There were three phases. The qualifiers led to a 4 leg Grand Prix stage and this produced two players for the super final to decide the winner. FIDE's page on the Women's Speed Chess Championship. Valentina Gunina and Anna Ushenina contested the first two Grand Prix finals and won one each but did less well in their final outings. Ushenina reached the superfinal on tie-break from Gunina after Alexandra Kosteniuk won the final Grand Prix and overtook both of them. In the final Ushenina beat Kosteniuk 14.5-13.5. This was a very wild match and which finished with three decisive bullet games and after losing two in a row and appearing to be in trouble in the third it was Ushenina who won the final game as time for the match ran out.
