1) Introduction

My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Holger Lieske, Xuhao He, Simon McNamara, Dimitris Skyrianoglou, Aleksandar Savanovic and everyone else who helped both with this issue.

Leinier Dominguez Perez won the 33rd Leon Chess title in a very satisfying event that was forced online due to the crisis. Although there has been a return to over the board chess it is online events that take the headlines with the PNWCC Super Invitational just having started with Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Le Quang Liem, Jeffery Xiong and Vladimir Fedoseev, the just concluded PNWCC Masters - World Online Open won by Jeffery Xiong and Sam Sevian and the continuing Women's Grand Prix.

However the 53rd Biel Chess Festival starts on Saturday with Radoslaw Wojtaszek, Pentala Harikrishna, David Anton Guijarro, Michael Adams, Salem, A.R. Saleh Romain Edouard, Noel Studer and Vincent Keymer playing rapid, blitz and classical chess and with an amateur open alongside. This is the most important over the board event to be played since the coronavirus crisis started.

That doesn't mean that important online events don't continue. The field for the Legends of Chess online tournament as part of the Magnus Carlsen tour has been announced. The Legends name has been translated into inviting former world chess champions Viswanthan Anand, Vladimir Kramnik, former championship challengers Peter Leko and Boris Gelfand along with 8 time Russian Champion Peter Svidler and Vasyl Ivanchuk. Magnus Carlsen, Anish Giri, Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren qualified as the top four finishers in the Chessable Masters. That starts a week tomorrow on Tuesday 21st July.

2) 33rd Leon Chess 2020

The 33rd Leon Chess tournament took place online due to the coronavirus crisis. The event started with a three day four player rapid tournament in the same format as has been held in recent years. Jaime Santos Latasa beat Alexei Shirov in the first semi-final on Friday, Leinier Dominguez Perez beat Parham Maghsoodloo in the second on Saturday and in the final on Sunday Dominguez dominated play although he in fact only won the third game which was enough to take the title. On Tuesday there is a rapid Open qualifier followed by a knockout on Wednesday.

3) PNWCC Super Invitational 2020

The PNWCC Super Invitational takes place online Sun 12th Jul to Fri 17th Jul 2020 hosted on Chess.com. These are two standard time control tournaments of four players and six rounds.

Group SOS (Summer of Seattle): Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Le Quang Liem, Jeffery Xiong and Vladimir Fedoseev.

Group Rising Stars: Andrey Esipenko, Parham Maghsoodloo, Amin Tabatabaei and Awonder Liang.

4) FIDE Chess.com Women's Speed Chess 2020

The FIDE Chess.com Women's Speed Chess takes place 18th June to 20th July. There were 6 qualifiers for the Grand Prix phase at the start, time controls of 5m+3spm, 3m+2spm and 1m+1spm, the latter bullet time control I haven't covered in TWiC. These weere Swiss events where the top 8 play a knockout of two rounds to produce 2 players for the next stage.

Qualifier 1 GM Anna Ushenina and WIM Ning Kayiu qualified, WIM Turmunkh Munkhzul and IM Le Thao Nguyen Pham qualified, GM Harika Dronavalli and IM Gunay Mammadzada qualified, FM Bibisara Assaubayeva and WGM Olga Girya qualified. In the fifth qualifier Deysi Cori and R Vaishali qualified. WGM Tatev Abrahamyan and GM Valentina Gunina qualified from the final bullet qualifier.

The next phase are the Grand Prix which will consist of four legs, with a total of 21 participants: the 12 players who qualified through the Swiss and Playoffs, plus nine seeded players. These nine players were nominated by FIDE and Chess.com.

The full list of seeded players is: Hou Yifan (China), Ju Wenjun (China), Kateryna Lagno (Russia), Alexandra Kosteniuk (Russia), Anna Muzychuk (Ukraine), Irina Krush (USA), Zhansaya Abdumalik (Kazakhstan), Sarasadat Khademalsharieh (Iran) and Humpy Koneru (India).

The first Grand Prix was won by Anna Ushenina who beat Valentina Gunina in the final. In the second Grand Prix Gunina reversed the result of the first final and beat Ushenina 7-5. Kateryna Lagno beat Hou Yifan 6.5-5.5 to win the 3rd Grand Prix. Lagno took a 3-0 lead before a late fightback by Hou in the bullet phase tied things up. In a second tie-break bullet game a mouse slip from Hou Yifan cost her the game and match. Anna Ushenina seems to have made it to the final, Lagno has caught Valentina Gunina in the standings but her Grand Prix is over and Gunina will need only to win her first match to overtake her (I am not sure what happens in the current tie situation).

20) Iberoamericano Chess24 2020

The Iberoamericano competition was a banter blitz for Chess24's Spanish speaking channels that took place 1st June to 13th July 2020. In the 12 game final Eduardo Iturrizaga Bonelli beat Luis Paulo Supi 6.5-4.5. The finalists were something of a surprise, the top seeds were Francisco Vallejo Pons, David Anton Guijarro, Jorge Cori and Alexei Shirov. Iturrizaga was 11th seed and Supi 22nd.

The Titled Tuesday Blitz took place on July 7th. Hikaru Nakamura won the knockout section beating Tabatabaei, M.amin. This makes up for last week where Nakamura had won the swiss section but was immediately eliminated - I read a report that he was scuppered by internet problems. Earlier Fabiano Caruana had won the Swiss part but lost to Raunak Sadhwani in the Quarter finals.
