My thanks to Rod McShane, Michel Van der List, Bob Wade, Gerald Schendel, Carlo Mazzoni, Jack Peters, Herman van Riemsdijk, Frank Kroeze, Marco R. Martini, John Saunders, ChessAssistant, Adam Raoof, Jane Seymour, , Robert Klomp, Ruben Casafus, Net 64 and all those who helped with this issue.
The number of events as Summer starts continues apace with another busy issue from events throughout the World. I will return to wrap up the coverage of the Kasparov-Deep Blue match next week with more reactions from Kasparov and others. The Russian KO Championships reveals the difficulties in covering such large and unwieldy events but perhaps there are indications as to its real purpose of the FIDE event. To produce a Championships that can be accomodated into an Olympic schedule. The end of next week will see the start of events in Spain in Russia so there is no let up in the pace of events. Hope you enjoy this issue.

Veselin Topalov might not quite have returned to the explosive form he was showing this time last year but he did complete a victory in Madrid. However he was caught in the final round by Alexei Shirov. He did this by virtue of winning his final three games. There was a playoff between Topalov and Shirov prior to the June 1st prize-giving. There were two drawn 20 minutes per side games and one 6 minutes for white 5 minutes for black game. Black got draw odds in this game and Topalov as black took the title after that final game did end in a draw.
A quiet round that saw Topalov extend his lead with a demolition of Jeroen Piket in a Benko Gambit. Piket is, like Jan Timman a player who will continue to play critical chess even when in bad form. Here he was outplayed from the opening to lose in only 27 moves. San Segundo plays very tactically and got a level position against Illescas when the dust cleared to score his second draw. Beliavsky-Polgar seemed also petered out into a drawn position just out of the opening. Akopian-Shirov was a dynamic game which ended with a level rook and pawn ending. Salov-Short was a Petrosian variation of the Queen's Indian which didn't seem quite normal before the ending was agreed drawn. Perhaps there is something of theoretical interest here.
Nigel Short brought out the King's Gambit for the second time in this event and again he won. Jeroen Piket must have been aware of the possibility this time and it didn't make any difference. Short's play provoked a series of sacrifices from Piket which he didn't follow up correctly. It appears that Piket missed a draw his 22. ...Qe2+ was an error and 22. ...Re2+ followed by 23. ...Rxg2+ if Short had attempted to go to the g file should have lead to perpetual check (pointed out by Michel Van der List. As it was Short was simply too much material up in the end. Shirov beat Salov in a centre-counter finished with a nice rook sacrifice. Topalov tried very hard in what was proved to be a bascially drawn ending against Illescas. Polgar-Akopian was just a draw. Beliavsky won a pawn but it was tricky to convert. San Segundo reached a drawn position which he then proceded to lose.
The penultimate round saw more decisive chess. Nigel Short tried the King's Gambit once too often and lost quite a drastic game. Perhaps Shirov was not the opponent to play this against. Piket must have hit Illescas with a new idea because the Spaniard wasn't really out of the opening before resigning. This tournament must have been very dispiriting for San Segundo. Much as Kasparov didn't really play the final game against Deep Blue San Segundo only made a token attempt today. The loss against Beliavsky must have really hurt. Beliavsky and Topalov had a tactical slugout in the opening and early middlegame. Beliavsky emerged with the advantage. Judit Polgar's shock tactics seemed to pay off well leaving her with some winning chances in an ending the exchange up.
In a fairly dull final round there was only one decisive game. Shirov beat the struggling Piket to catch Topalov there will be a playoff for the first place involving speed chess.

The 50th Russian Chess Championships have adopted the Knockout method that FIDE plans to use later in the year for their "World Championship" event. A healthy turnout was almost guaranteed with $500 for first round losers and $15,000 for the winner. There have been a number of surprises with Epishin departing in the second round losing to Fominyh and Lastin reaching the semi-finals may be an indicater for the future as he has recently achieved his final GM norms. Morozevich returned a little to his best reaching the quarter finals as did the other young Russian who has eclipsed him Vadim Zvjaginsev. After one of the two normal timerate games in the semi-finals Dreev and Bareev are one up and look set to meet in the final.
The system is two normal time-rate games played over two days followed by (in the case of a tie) two rapid (25 minute) games. If the players are still tied then groups of two blitz games are played until a winner is established.
The event serves as a warmup for the FIDE event later in the year. Not least for me! I have tried to summarise the results in one table, I am not convinced this is the best method but I hope its clear. Reading from the top the pairings are in groups of two showing who played who. Also the numbering of the rounds in the games sections is not generally established. ChessAssistant are publishing the games at:
http://www.demon.co.uk/convekta/
However the way they are sorted means that I could not definitely establish the order in which the normal timerate games, rapidplay games and blitz games were played (although it was clear which were the normal, rapid and blitz games so for instance if there were two draws in the normal time-rate games I have no way of knowing which way round they were.). I like the idea that each round should be given first and then divided by a decimal point. So the two normal games in round 1 would be 1.1 and 1.2 the two rapid games 1.3 and 1.4 and the blitz games 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8 and so forth. I am not sure whether others agree. I would welcome input before the FIDE event later in the year. I don't like these KO events as I think they are hard to follow and summaries and the results can be somewhat arbitary but it seems we are stuck with it for this year.
Interestingly the ChessAssistant site refers the format as the olympic system which I haven't heard before. If this is the official name it perhaps reveals the thinking behind the format. To make it an Olympic event every four years.

My thanks to Herman van Riemsdijk who covered the event on the internet at: http://www.hipernet.com.br/HiperChess/Najdorf.htm also to Fide master Ruben Casafus (Sysop of AJEDREZ ON-LINE) sent the final rounds of the Magistral Najdorf, Abierto Najdorf (the official names of the all-play-all and the open) He also reports that there is another tournament underway with:
1 Hugo Spangenberg Argentina 2550 2 Pablo Ricardi Argentina 2575 3 Gustavo German Argentina 2500 4 Maxim Sorokin Rusia 2560 5 Sergio Slipak Argentina 2505 6 Gilberto Milos Brasil 2605 7 Jaan Ehlvest Estonia 2635 8 Vladislav Tkachiev Kazajistan 2630 9 Alejandro Hoffman Argentina 2480 10 Maxi Ginzburg Argentina 2450 11 Emil Sutovsky Israel 2560 12 Andres Rodriguez Argentina 2565
In the main Category 13 event Ivan Morovic and Emil Sutovskij (who's reputation as a strong player ought to be growing) shared first place. In a generally disappointing event for the Argentinian players Hugo Spangenberg had a great result coming in clear third. In fourth was American Patrick Wolff whose seems to be a part time chess player these days. He faded a little at the end but nevertheless he scored a good result.
Last week I called it the Najdorf Memorial tournament. I think you can call such events Memorial events even if the principal is very much alive (and offering energetic suggestions away from the board). Perhaps there is a better name for events of this type. Suggestions welcome!

Panfox of Breda was the host of the final of the Dutch Team Championships. There were four teams playing a knockout event. The play was on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st of May and was covered live on the internet at:
http://www.worldaccess.nl/~meindert/playoffs/engels.htm
My thanks to Robert Klomp of Panfox for the games and results.
He says that: "The final, between Panfox (Breda) and HSG (Hilversum) was an exciting match. It looked for a long time that HSG would win it's first national title. Jan Timman lost both his games over the weekend. In the final he blundered a piece away against Friso Nijboer. With this result and Albert Blees loss Panfox was 2,5 - 0,5 down after just 3 results. Sofia Polgar had a very good endgame against Rini Kuijf but she couldn't convert it into a win. Stuart Conquest was two pawns down against Boersma but was also able to make a draw from a totally lost position. In the end Panfox was very lucky to win this match with 5,5 - 4,5"

1) During the European Team Championship in Pula (Croatia) the federations
of the zone 1.2 (a+b) had a meeting and decided to organize a zonal tournament
in spring 1998 for the new world championship cycle 1998/99.
Sources: Horst Metzing (secretary of the German chess federation) and Rolf
Liniger (Switzerland).
Rolf Liniger has published an article in the current issue of the Swiss
chess magazine "Die Schachwoche" (21/97, p.28): A commission will
prepare the reorganization of the European Chess Union (ECU) until the end of
October 1997. "Not the political struggle against FIDE, but a well working
organization of the continental interests will strengthen Europe's position and
the European influence within FIDE."
2) On Thursday the German chess club "SV 1930 Hockenheim" (near
Heidelberg/Mannheim) held the XVth traditional "asparagus blitz tournament"
(now it's time for the harvesting of asparagus in Germany). The winner was the
team of the Bundesliga club "SK Zaehringen 1921".
In the evening Lajos Portisch, the well-known Hungarian chess grandmaster,
gave a concert with German songs. Elena Beselt (piano) and Lajos Portisch (bass
baritone) presented ten songs of the German composer Franz Schubert who was born
200 years ago: "An die Musik" (Schober), "Schaefers Klagelied",
"Geheimes", "Heidenroeslein", "Der Musensohn"
(Goethe), "An Silvia" (Shakespeare), "Das Fischermaedchen", "Der
Doppelgaenger" (Heine), "Lachen und Weinen" and "Du bist die

A couple of points arising from the coverage last week. Firstly Ivan Morovic sent his game against Walter Arencibia via Herman van Riemsdijk. Secondly Frank Kroeze looked at the game Leko,Peter-Miles,Anthony Cienfuegos(4) 1997 and as others have also spotted the game cannot be correct. He says "Miles missed several easy wins at the end, including a mate in two. The trouble starts at move 14, where 14.f4 seems to be a horrible move. Instead of Miles' 14... O-O, 14... Bg4 would have won on the spot. So I assume 14.Bf4 is meant here. This move was probably misread by the one who typed in the games. Then 4 moves later the move 18.Bd2 would mean another terrible blunder. This should be 18.Rd2, after which the draw by perpetual seems correct. (After 14.f4, 18.Bd2 would be better than 18.Rd2, so this was probably mistakenly corrected by the "games-typer".) However, if the scoresheet should be as I suppose, Miles also missed a win. Instead of 17... Bc6 he could have played 17... b6! 18.Qd4 Qxh2+ 19.Kf1 c5 20.Qd2 Be6! -+. The move 20... Be6! however, is hard to spot in advance and perhaps Miles was satisfied with a draw and went for the perpetual.
There is also the possibility that 14.f4 should be replaced by another move. 14.Bg5 seems the only logical alternative, after which Miles' combination with 14... 0-0 is still possible, but I haven't checked yet what this difference would mean for the rest of the game. I know only about 8 games with 8... Nf6!? and it's not an unimportant line for the Petroff Defence as black is suffering a little in the line with 8... 0-0-0."
So I wonder if anyone knows the truth about this position.
London had two international tournaments running over the last week. A number of enthusastic organisers including Adam Raoof (who organised the Agency International in London) and Scott Freeman and Howard Curtis who were responsible for the Coulsdon Chess Fellowship tournament. My thanks to Adam Raoof, Jane Seymour, Rod McShane and Bob Wade for details of the events.
The event was organised to celebrate the centenary of the first women's tournament. It was held at the Agency Club in London. There were very few tame draws in this tournament. Richard Forster who recently achieved an IM norm at the Hastings Challengers in January followed by a GM norm in the Zurich Open drew quickly with IM Richard Tozer in the final round to make his final qualifying norm for the title of IM. 18-year old Stefanova who also achieved a male GM norm recently (in Hawaii) was disappointed not to finish among the winners. Joint winner (IM) Ketino Kachiani-Gersinska held the draw a pawn down against IM Susan Lalic to be the only player to complete the tournament without loss. Prize fund was shared as follows: 400 pounds sterling each to Kachiani-Gersinska, McShane and Dunnington (=1st). 50 pounds sterling each to Forster and Stefanova (=4th).
