1) Introduction

My thanks to Olexandr Prohorov, Holger Lieske, Xuhao He, Peter Doogers, Grant Oen, Simon McNamara, Robert Baskin, Gerard Demuydt and everyone else who helped both with this issue.

Magnus Carlsen won the Chessable Masters beating Anish Giri in the final. After dominating the event Carlsen looked less impressive in the final where Giri failed to take most of the opportunities presented to him. Nevertheless Carlsen won the final 2-0 and that was obviously a good score. The first game of the second set will perhaps be the most remembered game from the tournament although Carlsen's large advantage from the opening gave him a lot of latitude. The next event in the series starts July 21st. There were plenty of other interesting events both online and over the board including the Grandmaster battle match where Mustafa Yilmaz beat Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu 8.5-7.5, the PNWCC Masters - World Online Open with a 60 minute + 5 seconds a move time control, the 4NCL Online event finishing with Chessable White Rose winning the title are just a few.Plenty to look at.

2) Chessable Masters 2020

The Chessable Masters took place 20th June to 5th July 2020. This is part of the Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour. The event follows on from the Lindores Abbey Challenge and has a very similar format - the only tweak is the group stage where the players are split into two groups of 6 rather than play in one group of 12. This means an extra day of play before the knockout phase with groups A and B alternating for the first four days to produce 4 qualifiers each. The field is again very strong with the top 6 in the world competing along with previous finalists Dubov and Nakamura.

Players: Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, Ding Liren, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Alexander Grischuk, Teimour Radjabov, Anish Giri, Hikaru Nakamura, Pentala Harikrishna, Vladislav Artemiev and Daniil Dubov.

3) FIDE Chess.com Women's Speed Chess 2020

The FIDE Chess.com Women's Speed Chess takes place 18th June to 20th July. There were 6 qualifiers for the Grand Prix phase at the start, time controls of 5m+3spm, 3m+2spm and 1m+1spm, the latter bullet time control I haven't covered in TWiC. These weere Swiss events where the top 8 play a knockout of two rounds to produce 2 players for the next stage.

Qualifier 1 GM Anna Ushenina and WIM Ning Kayiu qualified, WIM Turmunkh Munkhzul and IM Le Thao Nguyen Pham qualified, GM Harika Dronavalli and IM Gunay Mammadzada qualified, FM Bibisara Assaubayeva and WGM Olga Girya qualified. In the fifth qualifier Deysi Cori and R Vaishali qualified. WGM Tatev Abrahamyan and GM Valentina Gunina qualified from the final bullet qualifier.

The next phase are the Grand Prix which will consist of four legs, with a total of 21 participants: the 12 players who qualified through the Swiss and Playoffs, plus nine seeded players. These nine players were nominated by FIDE and Chess.com.

The full list of seeded players is: Hou Yifan (China), Ju Wenjun (China), Kateryna Lagno (Russia), Alexandra Kosteniuk (Russia), Anna Muzychuk (Ukraine), Irina Krush (USA), Zhansaya Abdumalik (Kazakhstan), Sarasadat Khademalsharieh (Iran) and Humpy Koneru (India).

The first Grand Prix was won by Anna Ushenina who beat Valentina Gunina in the final. In the second Grand Prix Gunina reversed the result of the first final and beat Ushenina 7-5. Two more to go.s

4) Grandmaster Battle 2020

The Grandmaster Battle was a 16 game rapid match played over four days on Playchess where Mustafa Yilmaz beat Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu 8.5-7.5. A follow up match starts tomorrow between Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Vahap Sanal.

5) PNWCC Masters - World Online Open 2020

PNWCC Masters - World Online Open takes place Sat 4th Jul to Mon 6th Jul 2020. 9 round swiss 60 minutes plus 5 seconds a move hosted on Chess.com. Many strong players: Nikita Vitiugov, Liem Quang Le, Jeffery Xiong, Maxim Matlakov, Andrey Esipenko, Gabriel Sargsyan, Vladimir Fedoseev, Parham Maghsoodloo, Hrant Melkumyan, Samuel Sevian, Grigoriy Oparin, Dariusz Swiercz etc Games from the first 6 rounds are available. Jeffery Xiong, Awonder Liang and Baadur Jobava lead with 5/6 going into the final day.

Boris Gelfand gave an online lecture on Rook and Pawn Endgames on July 1st. The day finished with a blitz competition - the pairings went a little haywire towards the end when one of the players had to leave but it was generally an all-play-all won by Jeffery Xiong.

The XX Rio Grande Domingo International Online was a very strong 11 round blitz event held online on July 5th. A list of players that turned out to be incomplete (missing about 50 players only a fraction of whom I could identify) so I deleted games involving the unidentifiable players. GM Robert Hungaski won on tie-break from Alexei Shirov after both scored 10/11 (10 wins and 1 loss each) NM Elwin Retanal and Carlos David Gomez finished on 7.5/11.
