Magnus Carlsen won the Clutch Chess Champions Showdown International by the narrowest of margins against Fabiano Caruana. The match could easily have gone the other way, as Carlsen pointed out at the end, Caruana has definitely moved up a gear at faster time controls and is a force to be force to be reckoned with. I wasn't really convinced by the format in the first US player only event but it really blossomed as a format in this second outing. I'd happily watch one of these again. Carlsen's Online Rapid tour returns on Saturday with the Chessable Masters. Elsewhere there has been a nice mix of online events including the Sharjah Online International won by Mamedyarov and held on ICC and the C'Chartres Blitz Men Master on the Europe Echecs server won by Alireza Firouzja. Anish Giri won the MrDodgy Invitational beating David Navara in the final. There has been some limited return to over the board playing as you will see with the Offerspill Invitational in Oslo being the strongest of those currently.

The Clutch Chess Champions Showdown International took place Saturday, June 6 - Sunday, June 14, 2020 for a prize fund of $265, 000. This online event is double the size of the original event with just players from the USA last week. Players: Magnus Carlsen, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Leinier Dominguez, Alexander Grischuk, Levon Aronian, Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So and Jeffery Xiong. Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana contested an extremely tight final where the final two clutch games were decisive, Caruana was a point behind going into the final two 3 point clutch games and beat Carlsen, in the final game Carlsen struck back and thus won the match.
The format created by Maurice Ashley awards the normal points in a 12 game match (time control 10 minutes plus 5 seconds a move) but doubles these for games 5 and 6 at the end of day 1 and trebles them for the final games 11 and 12.

The MrDodgy Invitational was an 8-player knockout tournament that took place in the chess24 Playzone from 12th-14th June. The event was named after one of chess24's most enthusiastic kibitzers. Talk of an invitational eventually has become real with a very strong field. Each match consisted of 12 blitz games, with the first player to 6.5 points winning. The blitz games were played at a time control of 5 minutes for all moves (no increment). If the players were tied at 6:6 they played a single Armageddon game, with a coin flip to decide who choose colour. Players: Giri, Svidler, Navara, Korobov, Howell, Grandelius, Fressinet and Nielsen. Anish Giri beat David Navara 7-2 in the final.

Six-players Double Round Robin, with Time Control 10+3. Players: Mamedyarov, Wojtaszek, Harikrishna, Amin Bassem, Salem Saleh and Kasimdzhanov.
Shakhriyar Mamedyarov won with 7.5/10 a point clear of Pentala Harikrishna.

The C'Chartres Blitz Men Master was a two day event taking place on the Europe Echecs server 13th to 14th June 2020. Saturday saw a 16 player round robin and Sunday a knockout among the top 8 finishers. Players: Alireza Firouzja, Vassily Ivanchuk, Parham Maghsoodloo, Maxime Lagarde, Rauf Mamedov, Romain Edouard, Christian Bauer, Noel Studer, Dommaraju Gukesh, Vincent Keymer, Namig Guliyev, Zoltan Medvegy, Volodar Murzin, Daniel Dardha, Victor Stephan and Marc Andria Maurizzi. Alireza Firouzja dominated the event winning the round robin with 13/15 two points clear of second placed Maghsoodloo Parham and then he won the knockout section beating Maxime Lagarde, Vasyl Ivanchuk and Maghsoodloo in the final.

Sergey Karjakin took part in a very special chess match with the cosmonauts Anatoly Ivanishin and test-cosmonaut Ivan Vagner who are on board the International Space Station. The match was timed precisely to the half-century anniversary of the first Space to Earth game of chess played on June 9, 1970. Karjakin played from the Moscow Museum of Cosmonautics and the social network VKontakte provided coverage. The game was drawn.

The blitz (3+2) tournament, devoted the 100th anniversary since the birth of the Honoured Coach Efim Kogan (1920-1973) was organised by Bank Vostok and the Odessa Region Chess Federation in the Museum of Odessa Modern Art in Odessa, Ukraine. The 4NCL Online League takes place Tue 7th Apr to Sat 6th Jun 2020. The league replaces the regular season that has been halted due to the coronavirus. The time control is 45 minutes + 10 seconds a move. Games are played a 7:30pm on a Tuesday on Lichess. There is a 32 team top league - 10 rounds will be played followed by an 8 team knockout final phase to decide the winner. There are 5 divisions of varying strengths - who knows - I may turn up playing in one of the lower sections. Anti-cheating measures are in place. I've added division two games to the updates.
